    • This study was designed to evaluate the microbial profiling of anaerobic digestion during the processing of sewage sludge and food waste to volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in an immersed membrane bioreactor (iMBR) operating with a distinct organic loading rate (OLR). The results indicated that Firmicutes (0.17–0.38) and Actinobacteria (0.20–0.32) phyla dominated in anaerobic digestion with OLRs of 4 and 8 g VS/L/d, while Firmicutes (0.04–0.08), Actinobacteria (0.03–0.08) and Proteobacteria (0.02) were more abundant with OLR of 6 and 10 g VS/L/d in the bioreactors. Subsequently, the abundance of the Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera were responsible for higher yields of acetate, butyrate, caproate and lactate. The species of Clostridium sp. W14A (0.04–0.06), Bacterium OL-1(0.01–0.30) and Lactobacillus mucosae (0.002–0.01) were rich for both OLR dosages. Additionally, network and redundancy analysis confirmed that Clostridium sp. W14A, Bacterium MS4 and Lactobacillus had significant correlations with the VFAs produced, such as acetate, butyrate, and caproate. Variation analysis also demonstrated an appreciable correlation between environmental factors and the bacterial community. Overall, this bacterial community was dominated by the Firmicutes (0.04–0.38) phylum and Clostridium sp. W14A (0.04–0.60) species, which is a clear indicator of a lower population of acetogenic bacteria associated with greater VFAs generation.

  • Roadmap to urban energy internet with wind electricity-natural gas nexus : Economic and environmental analysis

    • Electrolysis hydrogen generation technology is one of the feasible ways to alleviate the problem of wind electricity curtailment. One promising hydrogen value-added application is to blend hydrogen into the natural gas grid and sell it as the heat energy carrier. This paper aims to discuss the feasibility of a roadmap to urban energy internet with wind electricity-natural gas nexus. Firstly, a framework is raised to integrate wind electricity generation, electrolysis hydrogen generation, and hydrogen-natural gas blending systems. Secondly, a series of reasonable hydrogen supply profiles are provided based on annual electricity curtailment and realistic natural gas scheduling. Then, an energy optimisation model and a techno-economic model are applied to simulate the generation of electricity and hydrogen, as well as determine the most economical hydrogen supply scheme. Finally, a case study in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China is taken to validate the benefits of the proposed roadmap. The preferred scheme is worked out with the net present value of 88.8 M$, including the economy configurations of the electricity-hydrogen hybrid generation system, as well as the hydrogen-natural gas blending plan. The results also indicate that annual electricity curtailment and annual carbon emission are decreased by 204 GWh (48.8%) and 40.2 kt (49.9%).

    • GaMnN ferromagnetic resonant tunneling diode, incorporating delta doping is theoretically investigated. A clear spin splitting current is observed when an optimal delta doping concentration is assumed. Compared to non delta doping case, the spin-down polarization can be enhanced 2-3 times at the doping concentration of 7x10(11) cm(-2). In addition, spin-down peak current is also increased similar to 30%. These results demonstrate that delta doping is a flexible and feasible way to tune electron spin polarization.

    • Human activities, especially increased nutrient loads that set in motion a cascading chain of events related to eutrophication, accelerate development of hypoxia (lower oxygen concentration) in many areas of the world's coastal ocean. Climate changes and extreme weather events may modify hypoxia. Organismal and fisheries effects are at the heart of the coastal hypoxia issue, but more subtle regime shifts and trophic interactions are also cause for concern. The chemical milieu associated with declining dissolved oxygen concentrations affects the biogeochemical cycling of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, silica, trace metals, and sulfide as observed in water column processes, shifts in sediment biogeochemistry, and increases in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, as well as shifts in their stable isotopes, in recently accumulated sediments. © 2014 by The Oceanography Society.     • We introduce a new problem domain for activity recognition: the analysis of children's social and communicative behaviors based on video and audio data. We specifically target interactions between children aged 1-2 years and an adult. Such interactions arise naturally in the diagnosis and treatment of developmental disorders such as autism. We introduce a new publicly-available dataset containing over 160 sessions of a 3-5 minute child-adult interaction. In each session, the adult examiner followed a semi-structured play interaction protocol which was designed to elicit a broad range of social behaviors. We identify the key technical challenges in analyzing these behaviors, and describe methods for decoding the interactions. We present experimental results that demonstrate the potential of the dataset to drive interesting research questions, and show preliminary results for multi-modal activity recognition.

    • Background The scale-up of tobacco control, especially after the adoption of the Framework Convention for Tobacco Control, is a major public health success story. Nonetheless, smoking remains a leading risk for early death and disability worldwide, and therefore continues to require sustained political commitment. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) offers a robust platform through which global, regional, and national progress toward achieving smoking-related targets can be assessed. Methods We synthesised 2818 data sources with spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression and produced estimates of daily smoking prevalence by sex, age group, and year for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015. We analysed 38 risk-outcome pairs to generate estimates of smoking-attributable mortality and disease burden, as measured by disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). We then performed a cohort analysis of smoking prevalence by birth-year cohort to better understand temporal age patterns in smoking. We also did a decomposition analysis, in which we parsed out changes in all-cause smoking-attributable DALYs due to changes in population growth, population ageing, smoking prevalence, and risk-deleted DALY rates. Finally, we explored results by level of development using the Socio-demographic Index (SDI). Findings Worldwide, the age-standardised prevalence of daily smoking was 25.0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 24.2-25.7) for men and 5.4% (5.1-5.7) for women, representing 28.4% (25.8-31.1) and 34.4% (29.4-38.6) reductions, respectively, since 1990. A greater percentage of countries and territories achieved significant annualised rates of decline in smoking prevalence from 1990 to 2005 than in between 2005 and 2015; however, only four countries had significant annualised increases in smoking prevalence between 2005 and 2015 (Congo [Brazzaville] and Azerbaijan for men and Kuwait and Timor-Leste for women). In 2015, 11.5% of global deaths (6.4 million [95% UI 5.7-7.0 million]) were attributable to smoking worldwide, of which 52.2% took place in four countries (China, India, the USA, and Russia). Smoking was ranked among the five leading risk factors by DALYs in 109 countries and territories in 2015, rising from 88 geographies in 1990. In terms of birth cohorts, male smoking prevalence followed similar age patterns across levels of SDI, whereas much more heterogeneity was found in age patterns for female smokers by level of development. While smoking prevalence and risk-deleted DALY rates mostly decreased by sex and SDI quintile, population growth, population ageing, or a combination of both, drove rises in overall smoking-attributable DALYs in low-SDI to middle-SDI geographies between 2005 and 2015. Interpretation The pace of progress in reducing smoking prevalence has been heterogeneous across geographies, development status, and sex, and as highlighted by more recent trends, maintaining past rates of decline should not be taken for granted, especially in women and in low-SDI to middle-SDI countries. Beyond the effect of the tobacco industry and societal mores, a crucial challenge facing tobacco control initiatives is that demographic forces are poised to heighten smoking's global toll, unless progress in preventing initiation and promoting cessation can be substantially accelerated. Greater success in tobacco control is possible but requires effective, comprehensive, and adequately implemented and enforced policies, which might in turn require global and national levels of political commitment beyond what has been achieved during the past 25 years.

    • Efficiencies of nonlinear optical-to-terahertz (THz) conversion below one percent remain a limiting factor for applications of multicycle THz radiation like THz-driven acceleration and inspired the use of multi-line pump spectra. To overcome the difficulty of phase stabilization of multiple narrowband sources required by the multi-line approach, we exploit its temporal analog, i.e., regular pulse trains with THz repetition rate, in which the THz waves generated by rectifying the individual pulses add coherently. The optical setup producing the pulse trains consists of motorized interferometers and enables precise control over the pulse train parameters like pulse spacing and amplitude. It is operated with a laser providing 400 fs pulses and energies of up to 110 mJ, which is the highest yet attempted for a pulse-train-type experiment. Opposed to earlier work, pulse division is done after amplification making the system more flexible in terms of tuning the pulse number. We present initial results of an experimental campaign of multicycle THz generation in custom periodically-poled crystals with large-apertures up to 10x20 mm(2). The available pump energy allows filling these apertures at high fluences, promising increased THz yields. We investigate the dependence of the conversion efficiency on the single pulse duration and aim to find the optimum pulse number for different crystal lengths to determine the efficiency limitations in a regime avoiding laser-induced damage. Since crystal length and pulse number define the bandwidth of the THz pulses, this work demonstrates a path to an optimized THz source tunable to different requirements of applications.

    • In mammals, primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the embryonic cell population that serve as germ cell precursors in both females and males. During mouse embryonic development, the majority of PGCs are arrested at the G2 phase when they migrate into the hindgut at 7.75-8.75 dpc (days post coitum). It is after 9.5 dpc that the PGCs undergo proliferation with a doubling time of 12.6 h. The molecular mechanisms underlying PGC proliferation are however not well studied. In this work. Here we studied how MASTL (microtubule-associated serine/threonine kinase-like)/Greatwall kinase regulates the rapid proliferation of PGCs. We generated a mouse model where we specifically deleted Mastl in PGCs and found a significant loss of PGCs before the onset of meiosis in female PGCs. We further revealed that the deletion of Mastl in PGCs did not prevent mitotic entry, but led to a failure of the cells to proceed beyond metaphase-like stage, indicating that MASTL-mediated molecular events are indispensable for anaphase entry in PGCs. These mitotic defects further led to the death of Mastl-null PGCs by 12.5 dpc. Moreover, the defect in mitotic progression observed in the Mastl-null PGCs was rescued by simultaneous deletion of Ppp2r1a (a subunit of PP2A). Thus, our results demonstrate that MASTL, PP2A, and therefore regulated phosphatase activity have a fundamental role in establishing female germ cell population in gonads by controlling PGC proliferation during embryogenesis.

  • Pediatric spinal cord injury rehabilitation: A protocol for an international multicenter project (SINpedSCI)

    • PURPOSE: Children and adolescents (<18 years old) who sustain a spinal cord injury (SCI) should ideally be managed in specialized rehabilitation services. This project aims to describe the organization of pediatric SCI in ten rehabilitation units in seven countries and to qualitatively explore psychosocial aspects of adolescents living with SCI. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional project is planned, using quantitative (web survey) and qualitative (interview) methods in ten rehabilitation units from Norway, Sweden, United States, Israel, PR China, Russia and Palestine. Individual interviews will be conducted with >= 20 adolescents aged 13-17 years at least 6 months' post rehabilitation. RESULTS: Units involved will be described and compared, according to funding, attachment to an acute SCI unit, catchment area, number of beds, admittance and discharge procedures, availability of services, staff/patient ratio, content and intensity of rehabilitation programs, length of stay, measurement methods, follow-up services, health promotion services, and pediatric SCI prevention acts. The semi-structured interview guide will include experiences from acute care and primary rehabilitation, daily life, school, contact with friends, leisure time activities, peers, physical and psychological health, and the adolescents' plans for the future. CONCLUSION: Based on the present protocol, this project is likely to provide new insight and knowledge on pediatric SCI rehabilitation and increase the understanding of pediatric SCI in adolescents and their families internationally.
