  • The Image of the Baltic : a Festschrift for Nils Blomkvist
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When the time-honored leader of the Baltic Rim seminar, Professor Nils Blomkvist, had his 65th birthday in 2008 a “celebration conference” under the title The Image of the Baltic – a Thousand-Years’ Perspective was arranged within the permanent Baltic Rim seminar series at Gotland University. Consequently, many of his old scholarly friends from the Baltic Rim fields of study – and some new ones – had gathered in order to highlight this chronological landmark and to discuss the role of images in the historical disciplines. The participants came from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden, not to mention the many Gotlanders among the Swedes. In 2010 Nils Blomkvist finally retired from his professorship in Medieval History at Gotland University. Now a selection of the papers that were presented at the Baltic Rim seminar have been converted into a Festschrift, including Nils Blomkvist’s own lecture Peter of Dacia and the Urban Revolution, which he gave at the closure of the conference. This anthology is his colleagues’ way of honoring him.

  • The Imperial Underbelly : Workers, Contractors, and Entrepreneurs in Colonial India and Scandinavia
  • 2022. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The volume introduces a new analysis of interconnected labour and economic history of colonial India and Scandinavia. From a recently found archive of a railway contractor’s private and business papers, the studies revise both Indian labour history and Scandinavian modern history, and ties south Sweden into the British Empire. With deep insights into everyday work practices of Indian and European contractors and manual labourers, the book establishes a bridge across the globe, between two poor regions as sites of extraction and industrial transformation, resulting from global migration and capital flows. Drawing on rich archival sources such as the Joseph Stephens Archive, Maharashtra State Archives, the National Archives of India, and the British Library, the book offers deep insights into everyday business practices of European contractors in India, which were rarely documented and have remained largely inaccessible so far.A unique look into the labour and entrepreneurship practices under British colonial rule in India, as well as its impact on the most transformative years of modern southern Scandinavia, the book will be of great interest to students, academics, and teachers of history, labour studies, subaltern studies, colonialism, imperialism, economic history, railways, economics, and Scandinavian and South Asian studies.

  • The Lost Swedish Tribe : Reapproaching the history of Gammalsvenskby in Ukraine
  • 2014. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the spring of 1782 a group of peasants of Swedish origin reached their destination on the right bank of Dnipro River in Ukraine. The village they founded became known as “Gammalsvenskby” (Russian “Staroshvedskoe,” English “Old Swedish Village”). In the 1880s links were established with Sweden and Swedophone Finland where the villagers were seen through a nationalistic-romantic prism and in broad circles became known as a brave group of people who had preserved their Swedish culture in hostile surroundings; in the terminology of this volume, a “lost Swedish tribe”. The village remained largely intact until 1929, when in the aftermath of the Russian revolution a majority of the villagers decided to leave for Sweden. When they arrived, there was disappointment. Neither Sweden nor the lost tribe lived up to expectations. Some of the villagers returned to Ukraine and the USSR.This book offers an alternative perspective on Gammalsvenskby. The changing fortunes of the villagers are largely seen in the light of two grand top-down modernization projects – Russia’s imperial, originating in the latter half of the eighteenth century, and the Soviet, carried out in the early 1920s – but also of the modernization projects in Sweden and Finland. The story the book has to tell of Gammalsvenskby is a new one, and moreover, it is a story of relevance also for the history of Russia, Ukraine, Sweden and Finland.

  • The Many Faces of the Far Right in the Post-Communist Space : A Comparative Study of Far-Right Movements and Identity in the Region
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the CBEES State of the Region Report 2021 is to map out the many varieties of far-right parties and movements in contemporary Central and Eastern Europe, a region typically described as marked by Euroscepticism, illiberalism and increasing tendencies towards authoritarianism. The report gathers in-depth analyses of the development and crucial features of far-right actors in 13 countries. It draws out certain common themes, but also highlights the diversity of far-right politics in the region. In the individual contributions of this report, the participating researchers depict a nuanced picture of the far right and the relative importance of, for example, the legacy of nationalist dissident movements, exile groups and organizations, and far-right actors’ diferent notions of empires, civilizations, spheres of identities, powers, and oppositions such as east and west, and north and south; all play a role both in relation to the current political agenda and to the memory or narratives of the past.In sum, we are witnessing a general turn away from the pro-European liberalism towards a more isolationist or protectionist – not to say xenophobic – nationalism. The report is the second in a series of annual reports from CBEES (Centre for Baltic and East European Studies), reporting and refecting on the social and political developments in the Baltic Sea Region and Central and Eastern Europe, each year from a new and topical perspective. The overall purpose with this initiative is to ofer a publication that will be of great interest to fellow researchers, policy makers, stakeholders, and the general public.

  • The Martiloge of Syon Abbey : the texts relevant to the history of the English Birgittines
  • 2015
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present volume contains the first complete edition of the historical texts in the Syon Abbey Martiloge, an important source for all those interested in the fates of the English Birgittine house. Founded in 1415 by Henry V, Syon Abbey was an important factor in English political and cultural life in the Late Middle Ages. Just as other Birgittine monasteries around Europe, Syon housed both brother and sisters in separate sections. Among the first Syon sisters we find a number of Swedish nuns who were transferred from Vadstena to England in order to facilitate the start of the new monastery. After the dissolution of the monasteries in the sixteenth century, the exiled community continued its activities abroad. The Martiloge texts edited here were written by a series of Syon brothers and deal with various subjects, for instance the foundation of the monastery and the oaths taken by new members. A central part of the edition presents a Syon obituarium with obits of almost all the members of the monastery until the seventeenth century. Other parts list benefactors and burial places. In addition to the Latin text editions, the book offers a parallel translation into English and a number of commentaries.
