  • Om den ekonomisk-historiska konsten att läsa skönlitteratur
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Långa linjer och många fält. - Stockholm : Acta Universitatis Stockholmiensis. - 9789198194777 - 9789198194760 ; , s. 279-323
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The economic-historic art of reading novels has the potential to generate more complex images of social and economic contexts than what the analysis of more traditional source material sometimes can. Studying novels can also give ideas of researching other circumstances than are perhaps common within economic history. The novel’s perspective makes it possible to observe overlooked circumstances. Finally, the reading of novels can make a search for the everyday perceptions of economic and social circumstances easier. This is how the reading of novels can contribute to economic historic research. At the heart of our reading are the economic and social processes and contexts against which the main plot is usually told. Three novels from the first half of the twentieth century have been used. They all depict life in the countryside and by using these we try to uncover ideas about reactions to the technical and organizational development in farming, the migration from the countryside, especially by young women, and the economic inequalities between the urban life and the countryside.

  • Gendering Nuclear Disarmament : Identity and Disarmament in Sweden during the Cold War
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation provides new knowledge about gender, nuclear weapons and disarmament. Previous feminist research has shown that in contexts where positive associations are made between military strength, masculinity and nuclear weapon possession, it is hard to imagine nuclear renunciation and disarmament as anything other than potential emasculation or feminization. Meanwhile, empirically based feminist theorization about gender, nuclear renunciation and disarmament remains a blind spot. This dissertation uses Sweden as a case to analyze nuclear weapon renunciation and disarmament from a feminist angle. As one of the countries that had the opportunity to acquire nuclear weapons – and considered doing so for some time – before deciding to become engaged with international disarmament aims instead, Sweden is an interesting case to study. The empirical focus is on disarmament policymaking in relation to the Swedish nuclear weapon debate (1954–1968) and the submarine crisis (1981–1989). The study draws on a broad set of primary sources, ranging from government speeches and parliamentary records to media output including comics and personal correspondence and diaries. Approaching the nuclear weapon debate and the submarine crisis as arenas for debating disarmament policy, and understanding disarmament policymaking as historically situated and marked by gendered, nationalized and sexualized power structures in specific contexts, the dissertation contributes empirical and theoretical insights relevant to feminist IR theory, and to nuclear history and IR studies more broadly. Contrary to previous feminist theorizing about disarmament as associated with femininity and/or emasculation, my findings suggest that Swedish disarmament policy was co-constructed with certain forms of masculinity, and that alternative policy discourses and identity representations were feminized and sidelined to the margins. The dissertation suggests that rather than assuming preconceived linkages between nuclear weapons possession and masculinity on the one hand, and disarmament and femininity on the other, it is necessary to challenge such binary conceptualizations and investigate how masculinities and femininities, and nuclear weapon and disarmament policy, have been co-constructed in specific historical contexts. The opposite, to depart from preconceived conceptualizations about gender and policy not only contributes to the reconstruction of gender, but also rules out alternatives to nuclearized security strategies and nuclearized masculinity. The dissertation provides a methodological and theoretical framework for further research on the making of disarmament policy from a feminist perspective.

  • Culture and Capacity : Drought and Gender Differentiated Vulnerability of Rural Poor in Nicaragua, 1970-2010
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation interprets gender-differentiated vulnerability to drought within a rural community located in the dry zone, la zona seca, of Nicaragua, a region that has been identified by the government and NGO sector as suffering from prolonged and, since the 1970s, more frequent droughts.  A combination of gender, capitals, and vulnerability demonstrates the value in using a multidimensional perspective to look at the socioeconomic and cultural contexts that form the capacity individuals have had to reduce their long-term vulnerability to drought in Nicaragua.  Due to the place-based characteristics of gender as well as vulnerability the analysis is mainly based on people’s stories about the history of their lives.  Based on these stories a local level picture is created of the households’ situation over time, how their work strategies and management of resources have varied, and how they perceived changes in capacity and vulnerability in relation to continuity and change in the climate.  The issue of adaptive capacity, which currently is less covered in research on gender and vulnerability and recognized in the literature as in need of more attention, and how it distinguishes itself from coping capacity in relation to vulnerability, is placed at the center of analysis.  In an additional analysis of how Nicaragua’s hazard management policies look upon the role and importance of interaction among societal levels and actors in reducing hazard vulnerability I show how the discourse has moved from emergency response to risk management with an increased emphasis on capacity building.  However, the recognition to differentiated vulnerability is lacking which risks hampering a successful vulnerability reduction.

  • Det sista manliga yrkesmonopolet : Genus och militärt arbete i Sverige 1865-1989
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The last male bastion in the labour market: gender and military work in Sweden 1865-1989   Throughout history, gender has been a central component of the Swedish armed forces’ division of labour. Its most striking expression is that soldiers have almost exclusively been, and expected to be, male. In Sweden, the last barrier to women’s access to military work was removed in 1989. No other occupational area remained closed for women that long. The main objective of this thesis is to examine how women received full formal economic citizenship through the removal of the last formal barriers to women’s paid labor. A secondary objective is to analyze the perceptions and importance of duty and obligations in women’s economic citizenship. The author argues for the need of a historical perspective to understand the processes that led to gendered equal rights in access to paid military work. For this reason, the thesis explores continuity and change in women’s military work and the gendered division of labor of the Swedish armed forces, from the year of 1865, when women’s military work entered a new phase through the establishment of voluntary defense organizations. The study ends in 1989 when the last barrier to women’s access to military work was removed and women thus received full formal economic citizenship in terms of equal formal rights to choose one’s profession and compete in the labor market. Drawing on a wide range of printed and unprinted source material, the thesis highlights the interaction between practice, norms, and legislation, where practice (women’s military work and its developments) broadened the perceptions and norms (of women working in the military), thus creating conditions for a more widespread practice through legislative changes.

  • Försörjd av sin hustru : Genus, folklig praktik och medborgarskap i arbetslöshetshjälpen 1921-1939

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation examines the evolution of married women’s citizenship through a case of State policy – i.e. the unemployment assistance during the inter-War years. While construing unemployment assistance policy, the State acted in relationship to gender, family, maintenance responsibilities and gainful employment. The dissertation discusses four dimensions of society having relevance for the study of the unemployment assistance from a citizenship perspective: the legal framework of unemployment assistance, the practice of social policy implemented by Stockholm’s Unemployment Committee, the political debate about unemployment assistance in the Stockholm City Council, and the popular practices regarding gender, family and livelihood in Stockholm. The main argument in this study is that unemployment assistance rested on a family-based citizenship in which married women were assigned a maintenance obligation. Through this construction, the married women’s primary right to work and their role as providers have been reinforced. The unemployment assistance’s approach to the family also existed in the marriage laws and joint taxation of husband and wife. Furthermore, the principle of female maintenance obligation was expressed in the political debate in the Stockholm City Council. The context of popular practices in which married women’s gainful employment played an increasingly important role during the inter-War years constituted a basis for the evolution of citizenship. While formulating unemployment assistance, the state sought to strike a balance between the need to protect the families from destitution and the necessity of maintaining the individual citizen’s obligation to work. Married women were not excluded from the balancing principles. In this manner, an important step was taken towards equality, and a citizenship assigning equal rights and obligations to men as well as women.
