  • Interpretive unpacking : moderately destabilizing identities and images in organization studies
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Research in the Sociology of Organizations : Post Modernism and Management - Post Modernism and Management. - 0733-558X. - 9780762310043 - 9781849505734 ; 21, s. 3-27
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper reviews some basic themes in postmodernism and argues for a moderate incorporation of these themes in organization studies and methodology. This approach, named interpretive unpacking, takes issues of multiple and fluid meanings, ambiguities and fragmentation seriously without the a priori privileging of these qualities over assumptions of stable meanings and coherence in social phenomena. The suggested position is illustrated in the fields of identity and image in organization studies through a critical reading of a key text. Assumptions around identities, identification, beliefs, perceptions and images are here problematized and seen as themes for critical exploration and careful interpretive inquiry rather than as robust starting points for the formulation of hypothesis for testing.

  • Knowledge work : Ambiguity, image and identity
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 54:7, s. 863-886
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article takes a sceptical view of the functionalist understanding of the nature and significance of ‘knowledge’ in so-called knowledge- intensive companies. The article emphasizes the slipperiness of the concept of knowledge, the ambiguity of knowledge, its role in what is constructed as knowledge work and the evaluation of work outcomes. Given this ambiguity, the management of rhetoric, image and social processes appears crucial in organizations of this kind. Difficulties in demonstrating competence and performance - as well as the significance of producing the right impression - make work identity difficult to secure. However, this is a key element in doing knowledge work. Successful rhetoric, image production and orchestration of social interactions call for the regulation of employee identities.

  • Leadership - a matter of gender?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Oxford Handbook of Gender in Organization. - : Oxford University Press. - 9780199658213
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The long-lasting and possibly not very useful question of whether women’s and men’s leadership are similar or differ has not led to conclusive answers. This chapter discusses different stances of the no-difference and the gender-stereotypcal views and the problems in investigating the subject—including complications in how to determine and motivate whether there is a difference in women’s and men’s ways of leading. We argue that it is not necessarily very fruitful to seek general patterns in terms of gender and leadership and argue that understanding gender and leadership calls less for a strict adherence to a specific theory and law-like patterns than an ability to consider a variety of key aspects and dynamics and a variation of tendencies and empirical outcomes.

  • Leadership : Convergence and Divergence in Leadership Relations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management Inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1056-4926 .- 1552-6542. ; 28:3, s. 319-334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article argues for theorizing and studying the significance of how so-called leaders and followers converge or diverge in their views and understandings of the leadership/followership relations they may be part of. Divergence or misfits may be common yet missed by the researcher who takes only one party’s view of leadership into account and/or assumes that people involved define the relationship in a similar way. The article identifies and illustrates four typical forms of shared/diverse meanings regarding leadership: high-alignment leadership (shared meanings), value misfit (diverse assessment), construction misfit (different views of what goes on), and multiple breakdowns (high level of confusion of what goes on and how to assess it). Given variations in views of leadership, this article makes a case for considering “divergent relationalities”—in some opposition to common ideas about “smooth” leadership/followership relations based on convergent meanings.

  • Leadership studies : From procedure and abstraction to reflexivity and situation
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Leadership Quarterly. - 1048-9843. ; 7:4, s. 455-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reviews and develops the recent critique of empiricist quantitative and qualitative methods in social science in general, and leadership studies, in particular. It argues for an interpretive-reflective approach that fully acknowledges the theory-laden, interpretative nature of empirical studies and the ambiguity of ‘data’. In addition the political and historical character of social science and the constitutive nature of language are seen as crucial elements for consideration in reflective research. The article suggests the use of a situational approach and careful descriptions of naturally occuring events presented in texts in such ways that they are open for interpretations other than those chosen by the author.
