  • Fast simulation of muons produced at the SHiP experiment using Generative Adversarial Networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHIP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400 GeV/c SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400 GeV/c proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of O(10(6)). To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented. The methods discussed in this paper can be generalised and applied to modelling any non-discrete multi-dimensional distribution.

  • ARC18 : Assessment of research and coproduction
  • 2019
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • From the Preface:In 2018, Jönköping University (JU) decided to initiate an external assessment of research and co-production (Assessment of Research and Coproduction 2018 – ARC18). Co-production is in this context defined as production of research together with stakeholders; a process that generates high quality knowledge, pursues the research frontier and results in innovative and useful activities in, and for, industry and the public sector. For JU, it is the first time an assessment of research and co-production has taken place; the overall aim of ARC18 being to further strengthen Jönköping University’s insights on how to continue to support the positive development of the university. More specifically, ARC18 evaluates the criterion for quality research within JU, and provides a means to strengthen its structure for our scientific activities in offering reliable background material for strategic decisions. To ensure different perspectives, disciplines and cross-boundary learning, four research environments at JU were selected: Lifelong Learning, SPARK, IMPROVE and the Centre for Family Enterprise and Ownership (CeFEO). Each research environment worked diligently to scrutinize and address all the questions and areas of evaluation, and the external experts did extensive work in analyzing, interviewing and synthesizing results. The outcomes have been significantly helpful for JU’s continuing work in developing and profiling research at JU. Besides giving examples of strength and high-quality international research, the assessment identified areas with varying potential; highlighting internal functions that could provide additional support and delineating favourable examples of linking research and innovation.

  • About the anti-semitism of a wall : on the work of Daniel Libeskind
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: The invisible in architecture. - London : Academy Editions, Ernst & Sohn. - 1854902857 ; , s. 348-355
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is an impossible story. It is the story of an architect who has to recognise his own failure at the point of transition from idea to building. Elsewhere in this book, Herman Hertzberger explains that he finds architectural theorising practically worthless if its author has never seen anything of his own realised in bricks and mortar. This idea played a role for Hertzberger when he was on the competition jury for the extension of the Berlin Museum with a Jewish Museum, and he recommended Libeskind as the winner (1989). Libeskind had excelled only in building medels and installations in which countless literary, historical and philosophical notions have been interwoven in exceedingly complex networks. Although he was seen in architectural circles and promoted himself as a designer with pretensions of realising his plans, Libeskind remained primarily a thinker. The laurels of the Berlin Museum competition gave him the chance to prove himself as a doer too. For Hertzberger it was in any case an excellent opportunity to put all Libeskind's fine words to the test against what he is so good at himself, namely architectural handicraft. Libeskind had to behave like a realist for once - then we would soon find out how well all those beautiful ideas stood up in practice. The ideas remained beautiful; the design proved feasible and is being built, although with countless worrying delays. Hertzberger has at least had his way. But along with the building of Libeskind's first major work, it is very much the question whether the architect himself is at all happy about it. He is now doing justice to his qualification as an architect in practice, but it is becoming clearer and clearer that there is a strange tension between Libeskind's Symbolbedrüftigkeit, his urge to metaphor, and the realisation of an architectural product. What is more, that tension is actually a paradox in which the architect becomes embroiled. Success looks like failure. Or worse still, it is failure masquerading as success. How did this come about?

  • A Sound Level Meter featured with automatic estimation of the measurement uncertainty
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Measurement. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-2241 .- 1873-412X. ; 188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the area of measuring the environmental noise the equivalent sound pressure level LA,eq is adopted and compared with legal thresholds in order to characterize the site of interest. The paper describes an innovative Sound Level Meter (SLM) able to provide information about the measurand contribution to the measurement uncertainty estimation. This measurement technology is made possible thanks to an approach based on bootstrap method for selecting the suitable measurement episode for an estimation of LAeq. The firmware implementation of the developed SLM is disclosed with reference to a low-cost platform for real-time execution of the proposed methodology. Finally, a metrological characterization of the prototype performed in laboratory is reported as well as the performance comparison with a class 1 SLM in a real scenario. As a result, the smart features of the new SLM may be easily implemented by including commercial devices into the instrument schematics.
