  • Animal Welfare Assessment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Animal Welfare. - London : Routledge. - 9781032022062 ; , s. 22-34
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter describes the general principles of animal welfare assessment. Although it focuses on farmed animals kept for food, the general principles described here are applicable to a wide variety of settings. Information on animal welfare can be used to guide production processes and management (on farms, during transport and at slaughter) or in assurance and information schemes and efforts. Animal welfare is a multi-dimensional concept and for a holistic assessment all relevant dimensions have to be taken into account. This chapter describes animal welfare dimensions and the different categories of measures, including those that are sensor-based. It addresses the difficulties with overall measures of animal welfare as well as the principles of multi-criteria approaches. Effective use of the measures requires knowledge of the reasons for, and goals of, welfare assessment and how information about animal welfare will be used, which determines the way the results from welfare measures are synthesised. Whereas measures of animal welfare can be taken objectively on animals or their environment, the way the results are assembled and interpreted into a level of welfare remains – at least partly – based on value judgements. It is concluded that animal welfare scientists should engage with people having an interest in animal welfare to build together animal welfare assessment tools.

  • A Review of 'Energy and Transport in Green Transition: Perspectives on Ecomodernity'
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Challenges in Sustainability. - : Librello. - 2297-6477. ; 4:2, s. 15-16
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The book “Energy and Transport in Green Transitions – Perspectives on Ecomodernity” deals with the societally and scientifically crucial topic of energy and climate change mitigation. The book starts by setting high ambitions as the authors attempt “to go beyond both the extremism of the anti-capitalist critique and the radical enthusiasm of techno-economic positivism” in their exploration to find ways to resolve political, economic and technological entanglements “to boost a greener economy and culture”. It aims to so through a regional comparative study that looks at mature Western economies, the rapidly developing China, and the developing economies in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors present an excellent descriptive historical review for those interested in the broader picture of energy production and automobile sector in the regions addressed. However, in an attempt to cover as much ground as possible while assuring "maximum accessibility”, the authors' explanation of the dynamics of change involved is not conveyed in an analytically convincing manner.
