  • Introducing the EC Hotspot Approach: A Framing Analysis of EU’s Most Authoritative Crisis Policy Response
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International migration. - : Wiley. - 0020-7985 .- 1468-2435. ; 58:6, s. 139-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Out of the policy initiatives that emerged in the aftermath of the “Refugee Crisis”, none is more elusive that the hotspot approach. Our aim in this article is to shed light upon what kind of policy output the hotspot approach entails, by conducting a framing analysis of key European Commission (EC) documents. We draw on discursive institutionalist approaches which focus on the policy process. Within the policy process, we focus particularly on identifying policy frames as organizing principles and key ideas, in order to trace the representation of the problem and solutions to it. Our findings show how the hotspot approach, in incarnating both the problem and the solution to migration as primarily a concern for management, represents another string in the long‐standing tensions of the harmonisation of the EU asylum and migration policies.

  • Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection effects on thermospheric density as inferred from International Space Station orbital data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Advances in Space Research. - : Elsevier. - 0273-1177 .- 1879-1948. ; 60:10, s. 2233-2251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solar activity induces long term and short term periodical variations in the dynamics and composition of Earth’s atmosphere. The Sun also shows non periodical (i.e., impulsive) activity that reaches the planets orbiting around it. In particular, Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) reach Earth and interact with its magnetosphere and upper neutral atmosphere. Nevertheless, the interaction with the upper atmosphere is not well characterized because of the absence of regular and dedicated in situ measurements at high altitudes; thus, current descriptions of the thermosphere are based on semi empirical models. In this paper, we present the total neutral mass densities of the thermosphere retrieved from the orbital data of the International Space Station (ISS) using the General Perturbation Method, and we applied these densities to routinely compiled trajectories of the ISS in low Earth orbit (LEO). These data are explicitly independent of any atmospheric model. Our density values are consistent with atmospheric models, which demonstrates that our method is reliable for the inference of thermospheric density. We have inferred the thermospheric total neutral density response to impulsive solar activity forcing from 2001 to the end of 2006 and determined how solar events affect this response. Our results reveal that the ISS orbital parameters can be used to infer the thermospheric density and analyze solar effects on the thermosphere.

  • Peripheralisation and externalisation of the EU asylum regime: implications for the right to seek asylum on the southeastern EU border islands
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-183X .- 1469-9451. ; 48:19, s. 4586-4602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the increase of refugee arrivals in 2015, the longstanding trend of using islands to confine asylum seekers at the EU borders became a prominent aspect of asylum governance. By looking at the southeastern border of the EU, as it has been constructed around the five Greek islands that host the EU's hotspot approach, I demonstrate the implications of the European governance of asylum on the individual right to seek asylum. In doing so, I argue that there is a newly introduced process of peripheralisation of asylum. Under the term peripheralisation I describe the multidimensional process of demotion or downgrading of a socio-spatial unit about other socio-spatial units, i.e. the Greek mainland and the northern EU member states. Although the externalisation of asylum, is key to understanding the impact of the right to asylum, peripheralisation provides the necessary conceptual tool to explain the new architecture of confinement inside the territory of the EU and on the southeastern border islands. The main contribution of the article is providing an understanding of how the right to asylum is also hampered within the EU through the peripheralisation of the islands and by the externalisation of Turkey.

  • Lethal visions: the eye as function of the weapon
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies on Security. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2162-4887 .- 2162-4909. ; 5:1, s. 62-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In measure to the development of projectile weaponry, the conduct of modern war has accorded perception with destruction, marshalling and enfolding human vision into ever more sophisticated sociotechnical assemblages of targeting. Drawing upon Paul Virilio’s notion of a ‘logistics of perception’, this article charts the four successive orders of targeting constituted by the alignment of the line of sight with the line of fire (aiming), the measurement of distance to a target (ranging), the trailing and prediction of a target’s movement (tracking) and the directed navigation to a target’s position in space (guiding). Alongside the functional specification of each of these orders is concurrently drawn out the accompanying corporeal regimentations of the organisms thus imbricated. With its capillaries now spanning the wider ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, the contemporary war machine has however extended its sensorial reach far beyond the confines of its original human strictures. Its culmination may well lie in the advent of laser technology and the promise of a weaponisation of light itself through which the definitive coincidence of perception and annihilation is to be realised, even as it dispenses with the ocular orb.
