Healthcare Professionals' Views on Parental Participation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units

- PURPOSE: To examine the associations between age, gender, and profession in relation to the perceived importance of parental participation in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.DESIGN AND METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional design was used. Participants were recruited consecutively from all 40 existing NICU units in Sweden. A total of 443 healthcare professionals (372 nurses and 71 physicians) participated in the study. Participants completed the Swedish version of the Empowerment of Parents in the Intensive Care-Neonatology (EMPATHIC-N) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analyses.RESULTS: The findings indicated that profession and age, but not gender, had an overall perceived importance on how nurses and physicians rated specific aspects of parental participation in NICUs.CONCLUSIONS: Being a nurse, compared to a physician, was associated with an increase in overall perceived importance of parental participation in NICUs. These differences may affect and may be crucial for how parents take a part in the care of their infant and also for how they adapt to the parental role.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Nurses and physicians require education and training that support parental participation based on age and their different roles, rather than simply conveying information about the technical medical aspects of NICU care. For a sustainable outcome all team members should be invited to discuss cases from their perspectives.

Dietary patterns and social structures in medieval Sigtuna, Sweden, as reflected in stable isotope values in human skeletal remains

- Stable isotopes (delta C-13, delta N-15) have been studied in human burials from the medieval town Sigtuna in Sweden. Dietary patterns of 80 adult individuals were analyzed on three cemeteries representing the phases of establishment, prosperity and decline of the town. All analyzed individuals were radiocarbon dated. One of the cemeteries, Church 1, represents a population of higher social status than those at the other two cemeteries. The delta C-13 values are homogenous and showed that the protein intake was mainly of terrestrial origin in the whole population. delta N-15 values varies more and they may indicate a higher input of vegetables in the diet at one of the cemeteries, the Nunnan block. Already in the initial phases of Sigtuna a social hierarchy had been established which is reflected in dietary patterns. Apparently more animal protein was consumed among the high status population of the town. Furthermore, differences in dietary patterns between the sexes were noted. In all phases the females show more clustered values indicating a more homogeneous diet than that of the males.

Clinical Response to Personalized Exercise Therapy in Heart Failure Patients with Reduced Ejection Fraction is Accompanied by Skeletal Muscle Histological Alterations

- Heart failure (HF) is associated with skeletal muscle wasting and exercise intolerance. This study aimed to evaluate the exercise-induced clinical response and histological alterations. One hundred and forty-four HF patients were enrolled. The individual training program was determined as a workload at or close to the lactate threshold (LT1); clinical data were collected before and after 12 weeks/6 months of training. The muscle biopsies from eight patients were taken before and after 12 weeks of training: histology analysis was used to evaluate muscle morphology. Most of the patients demonstrated a positive response after 12 weeks of the physical rehabilitation program in one or several parameters tested, and 30% of those showed improvement in all four of the following parameters: oxygen uptake (VO2) peak, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), exercise tolerance (ET), and quality of life (QOL); the walking speed at LT1 after six months of training showed a significant rise. Along with clinical response, the histological analysis detected a small but significant decrease in both fiber and endomysium thickness after the exercise training course indicating the stabilization of muscle mechanotransduction system. Together, our data show that the beneficial effect of personalized exercise therapy in HF patients depends, at least in part, on the improvement in skeletal muscle physiological and biochemical performance.

- The Great Schism divided Western Christianity between 1378 and 1417. Two popes and their courts occupied the see of St. Peter, one in Rome, and one in Avignon. Traditionally, this event has received attention from scholars of institutional history. In this book, by contrast, Joëlle Rollo-Koster investigates the event through the prism of social drama. Marshalling liturgical, cultural, artistic, literary and archival evidence, she explores the four phases of the Schism: the breach after the 1378 election, the subsequent division of the Church, redressive actions, and reintegration of the papacy in a single pope. Investigating how popes legitimized their respective positions and the reception of these efforts, Rollo-Koster shows how the Schism influenced political thought, how unity was achieved, and how the two capitals, Rome and Avignon, responded to events. Rollo-Koster's approach humanizes the Schism, enabling us to understand the event as it was experienced by contemporaries.

- This article presents results from 23 structured interviews focused on creative meetings (a crucial part of the definition being that something new is created in the meeting, through interaction between people). The interviewees represented many different fields of industry and academia, and together many hundred years of experience of meetings. Six main perspectives pertaining to creative processes were discussed: dynamics and social interaction, leadership, actions and results, technical equipment, diversity and language, and size of meetings. The interviewees were asked to relate their personal experiences, and the study is therefore qualitative and retrospective. Opinions were similar for some factors, including the central role of trust and optimal size of creative meetings (6-10 people). Views differed considerably for other factors; for example on the impact of diversity on the creative process, and whether creative meetings happen by chance or by planning and deliberation. For many topics, both positive and negative aspects were mentioned; for example, the influence of diversity and language on creative processes.
