  • PCNs, PCDD/Fs, and Non-orthoPCBs, in Water and Bottom Sediments from the Industrialized Norwegian Grenlandsfjords
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 43:10, s. 3442-3447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chlorinated toxic planar aromatic compounds were analyzed in the heavily industrialized Grenlandsfjords, which is a system of silled fjords in southern Norway. Surface water samples contained 7.4-160 ng/m(3) polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), 14-410 ng/m(3) polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and 0.31-2.4 ng/m(3) non-orthochlorinated biphenyls (non-orthoPCBs). The concentrations of PCDD/Fs were about 300 times higher than in the Baltic Sea. Highest level of the compounds was found near a magnesium production plant. Hepta-CDFs and penta-CNs dominated in the inner-fiord waters, and tetra-CB77 was the major non-orthoPCB congener. Sediment samples had PCDD/F concentration of 25-730 ng/g dw. Highest concentration was detected close to the magnesium plant. Octa-CDF dominated in the fjord sediments, especially near the magnesium plant, indicating a discharge-specific contamination with this congener. The isomer composition of PCDD/Fs and of PCNs, was unchanged when comparing samples from different layers of a sediment core from the deep anoxic water. This concludes that essentially zero degradation had occurred during similar to 50 years in this environment

  • On the performance of Ag/Al2O3 as a HC-SCR catalyst – influence of silver loading, morphology and nature of the reductant
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Catalysis Science and Technology. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2044-4753 .- 2044-4761. ; 3:3, s. 644-653
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on the performance of Ag/Al2O3 catalysts for hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) of NOx under lean conditions, using complex hydrocarbons as reductants. The aim is to elucidate the correlation towards the silver loading and morphology, with respect to the nature of the reductant. Ag/Al2O3 samples with either 2 or 6 wt% silver loading were prepared, using a sol–gel method including freeze-drying. The catalytic performance of the samples was evaluated by flow reactor experiments, with paraffins, olefins and aromatics of different nature as reductants. The physiochemical properties of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy/high angle annular dark field imaging, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and N2-physisorption. The 2 wt% Ag/Al2O3 sample was found to be the most active catalyst in terms of NOx reduction. However, the results from the activity studies revealed that the decisive factorfor high activity at low temperatures is not only connected to the silver loading per se. There is also a strong correlation between the silver loading and morphology (i.e. the ratio between low- and high- coordinated silver atoms) and the nature of the hydrocarbon, on the activity for NOx reduction. Calculated reaction rates over the low-coordinated step and high- coordinated terrace sites showed that the morphology of silver has a significant role in the HC-SCR reaction. For applications which include complex hydrocarbons as reductants (e.g. diesel), these issues need to be considered when designing highly active catalysts.

  • Men's reproductive coercion of women : prevalence, experiences, and coping strategies-a mixed method study in urban health facilities in León, Nicaragua
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Women's Health. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1472-6874. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Reproductive coercion (RC) is a common form of violence against women. It can take several expressions aiming at limiting women's reproductive autonomy. Thus, the frequency and how reproductive coercion can be resisted must be investigated. There is limited research regarding RC in Latin America. Therefore, this study aimed to measure RC prevalence and associated factors and to explore the women experiences and coping strategies for RC.METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods study with parallel sampling was conducted in Nicaragua. A quantitative phase was applied with 390 women 18-35 years old attending three main urban primary health care facilities. Lifetime and 12 months of exposure to RC behaviors including pregnancy promotion (PP) and contraceptive sabotage (CS) were assessed. Poisson regression with a robust variance estimator was used to obtain adjusted prevalence rate ratios and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs). In addition, seven in-depth interviews were collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.RESULTS: Ever RC prevalence was 17.4% (95% CI, 13.8-21.6) with similar proportions reporting ever experiencing PP (12.6%, 95% CI 9.4-16.3) or ever experiencing CS (11.8%, 95% CI 8.7-15.4). The prevalence of last twelve months RC was slightly lower (12.3%, 95% CI, 9.2-16.0) than above. Twelve months PP (7.4%, 95% CI 5.0-10.5) and CS (8.7%, 95% CI 6.1-12.0) were also similar. Women's higher education was a protective factor against ever and 12 months of exposure to any RC behaviors by a current or former partner. Informants described a broad spectrum of coping strategies during and after exposure to RC. However, these rarely succeeded in preventing unintended pregnancies or regaining women's long-term fertility autonomy.CONCLUSIONS: Our facility-based study showed that men's RC is a continuous phenomenon that can be enacted through explicit or subtle behaviors. Women in our study used different strategies to cope with RC but rarely succeeded in preventing unintended pregnancies or regaining their long-term fertility autonomy. Population-based studies are needed assess this phenomenon in a larger sample. The Nicaraguan health system should screen for RC and develop policies to protect women's reproductive autonomy.

  • Teachers and researchers inquiring into mathematics teaching and learning : the case of linear functions
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Relating practice and research in mathematics education. - Trondheim : Tapir Academic Press. - 9788251922128 ; , s. 299-310
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The teachers in this study are participants in the LCM1- (Learning Communities in Mathematics) project run at Agder University College. The project emphasises the development of communities of teachers and researchers focused on inquiry in mathematics and teaching. This paper deals with a well-planned lesson in an eleventh grade class in a Norwegian upper secondary school. We will present data that illustrate how the teachers intervened to reach certain goals that had been identified through the planning process. These interventions identified discourses, which showed that there was a discrepancy between how the teachers interpreted and used a certain word for a mathematical concept and how the students interpreted the same word. Our findings illuminate common challenges faced when trying to build a community of inquiry in the classroom.

  • Language and style in David Peace’s 1974 : A corpus-informed analysis
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Etudes de stylistique anglaise. - : OpenEdition. - 2116-1747 .- 2650-2623. ; :4, s. 133-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article demonstrates the potential of corpus linguistic methods for supporting and informing qualitative stylistic analysis. Focusing on an analysis of an extract from David Peace’s novel 1974, it is argued that corpus linguistic techniques offer a means of validating qualitative claims as well as providing a relatively objective method for selecting a text sample for qualitative analysis.

  • Blockage pattern of longitudinal flow in Meniere's disease
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Acta Oto-Laryngologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0001-6489 .- 1651-2251. ; 133:7, s. 692-698
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conclusion: In the present study, classification of the patterns of 3D CT images of the ductus reuniens (reuniting duct) (RD), saccular duct (SD), and endolymphatic sinus (ES) gave more precise information for assessing the pathological condition of Meniere's disease (MD) than our previous study. Objective: This study attempted to provide more detailed information on MD by classifying the patterns of 3D CT images of the RD, SD, and ES in patients with MD. Methods: We examined the ears of 62 patients with definitely diagnosed unilateral MD based on the criteria of the Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) using 3D CT. The 3D CT images of bony grooves of RD, SD, and ES (BRD, BSD, and BES) were classified into patterns according to aspects of their patency. Results: BRD could be classified into six types by assessing their patency defined using the criteria in this study. In the ears on the affected side of patients with MD, the BRD, BSD, and BES lost continuity in 3D CT images along their bony routes and were significantly different from normal healthy ears (p<0.01). There were no significant differences among each stage of MD in the distributions of BRD and BES except for BSD.
