  • The role of South-South FDI in the economies of developing Asia
  • 2011
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper attempts to measure the size of South-South foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing East Asia and the trends in it, and the characteristics of the investing countries and the investments themselves. It also summarizes the findings of studies in individual countries of the effects of these investments. The studies of individual countries will be used to try to find some consensus on differences between South-South FDI and North-South FDI. Among the comparisons of the two types of FDI we try to summarize are fndings about their industrial composition; their effects on their host countries; and their host-country firms' productivity, wages, and employment, and explore how these differ across industries. Our analysis shows that the increased presence of South FDI in East and Southeast Asia might have different effects on host economies from those of FDI from the North.

  • Advances in the Mechanization of Regenerating Plantation Forests: a Review
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Current Forestry Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2198-6436. ; 6, s. 143-158
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of Review The mechanization of silvicultural work on forest plantations is usually driven by a decreasing supply of motivated labour which increases its relative cost. Mechanization can also result in other advantages like increased effectiveness, higher efficiency, and improved working conditions. The purpose of our review is to examine the last few decades' endeavours to mechanize the regeneration activities of plantation forestry in the southern and northern hemisphere. In this case, regeneration activities include (1) site preparation; (2) tree planting; and (3) stand tending until the crop trees are free from vegetative competition. Recent Findings Originally, the mechanization of silvicultural work commenced in the northern hemisphere, but over the past decades, the most notable progress has been made in the southern hemisphere plantation forests. Although soil preparation is largely mechanized across the globe, tree planting and stand tending activities lag behind because of factors such as global variations in the manner in which they are performed, higher level of complexity, and low-cost competitiveness compared with existing labour-intensive methods. For mechanization of regeneration/silvicultural activities to progress, productive and adaptable machines will be required where economies of scale permit cost-efficient operations. These machines will probably have to be modified to the specific forestry context of different countries. Knowledge of the existing and state-of-the-art regeneration technologies available in both the northern and southern hemispheres is important for foresters to make informed decisions about the selection and application of mechanized regeneration systems.

  • Why Doesn't Primary Biliary Cholangitis Respond to Immunosuppressive Medications?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Current hepatology reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2195-9595. ; 16:2, s. 119-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this review is to discuss reasons why immunosuppressive therapy so far failed in Primary Biliry Cholangitis.Even targeted immunosuppressive therapy seems ineffective or potentially harmful.Bile acid-mediated cholangiocyte damage, facilitated by insufficient bicarbonate secretion, seems to attenuate the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic actions of immunosuppressant and immunomodulatory drugs in a clinically significant way.

  • A systematic overview of radiation therapy effects in cervical cancer (cervix uteri)
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-226X .- 0284-186X. ; 42:5-6, s. 546-556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic review of radiation therapy trials in several tumour types was performed by The Swedish Council of Technology Assessment in Health Care (SBU). The procedures for evaluation of the scientific literature are described separately (Acta Oncol 2003; 42: 357-365). This synthesis of the literature on radiation therapy for cervical cancer is based on data from 1 meta-analysis and 34 randomized trials. In total, 35 scientific articles are included, involving 7952 patients. The results were compared with those of a similar overview from 1996 including 34 024 patients. The conclusions reached can be summarized in these points: There are limited scientific data supporting that postoperative pelvic radiotherapy improves disease-free survival in early cervical cancer. No firm conclusion can be drawn. There is moderate scientific evidence that external beam radiotherapy combined with brachytherapy gives a similar disease-free and overall survival rate as radical hysterectomy in early cervical cancer. There is strong scientific evidence that concomitant radiochemotherapy improves disease-free and overall survival compared to radiotherapy alone in early cervical cancer. The NCI has recently published an announcement stating that cisplatin-based chemotherapy should be used concomitantly with radiotherapy in cervical cancer. No solid documentation for this statement can be found concerning locally advanced stages ( >IIB). There is a strong scientific evidence that cisplatin-based chemotherapy given concomitantly with radiotherapy is superior to concomitant chemotherapy with hydroxyurea. There is no scientific evidence to show that neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy improves disease-free or overall survival compared to radiotherapy alone in patients with localized cervical cancer. There is moderate scientific evidence that high-dose-rate brachytherapy gives the same local control rate as low-dose-rate brachytherapy but with fewer rectal complications.

  • Aerial seeding of forests in Russia: A selected literature analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science. - : IOP Publishing. - 1755-1307 .- 1755-1315. ; 226
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study is intended for international readers or those unable to read Russian. Information search was carried out in Russian-language databases (Russian libraries and ELibrary.ru) and English-language databases. . Currently, there are a large number of sites in the Russian forests that need to be restored. For many of them, reforestation by ground-based seeding or planting is inefficient or not available. Sowing forest from the air in Russia has more than half a century of history. The results of retrospective analysis show that the choice of the reforestation method depends on the site characteristics and the level of negative environmental impact. Generally, the cost of aerial seeding on such sites with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is lower compared to the use of manned aerial vehicles (MAV). This study will aid in the planning of new forestry experiments to study reforestation with the assistance of natural reforestation in Russia. The study will enable correct plant propagation protocols for sustainable forest management. However, many questions remained unresolved: what types of UAV and sowing apparatus to use; how to position the UAV under a forest canopy?

  • Three Different Approaches for the Clarification of the Interactions between Lipoproteins and Chondroitin-6-sulfate
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 83:15, s. 6040-6046
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two different experimental approaches were used for obtaining a comprehensive view and understanding of the interactions between apolipoprotein B-100 (ApoB-100) of low-density lipoprotein and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) of high-density lipoprotein and chondroitin-6-sulfate (C6S) of arterial proteoglycan. The techniques employed were partial filling affinity capillary electrophoresis (PF-ACE) and continuous flow quartz crystal inicrobalance (QCM). In addition, molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were used to provide a supportive visual insight into the interaction mechanism. A new tool for analysis of QCM-data was utilized, i.e., adsorption energy distribution calculations, which allowed a deeper understanding of the interactions, especially at different temperatures. The PF-ACE technique probed mainly the strong adsorption interactions whereas in the MD calculations short:- and long-range interactions could be distinguished. Although there are differences in the techniques, a pretty good agreement was achieved between the three approaches for the interaction of 19 amino acid peptide of ApoB with C6S giving log affinity constants of 4.66 by QCM, 5.02 by PP-ACE, and 7.39 by MD, and for 15 amino acid peptide of ApoE with C6S 5.34 by QCM, 5.28 by PT-ACE, and 4.60 by MD at physiological temperature 37.0 degrees C.
