  • Prediction of Peak Shear Strength of Natural, Unfilled Rock Joints Accounting for Matedness Based on Measured Aperture

    • The mechanical behaviour of natural, unfilled rock joints is influenced by the interaction between surface roughness and matedness of the contact surfaces. In the field, natural rock joints normally exhibit a mismatch between the contact surfaces, mainly due to different geological processes such as weathering or deformations. Various attempts have been made to estimate how matedness of rock joints influences their peak shear strength. However, the proposed methodologies imply certain difficulties since they are intended to estimate the matedness of rock joints based mainly on visual inspection, and by relating an initial shear displacement to the length of the analysed sample or by relating the opening of saw-tooth and two-dimensional joint profiles with the degree of interlocking. Therefore, a tested peak shear strength criterion for natural, unfilled rock joints that realistically accounts for the influence of matedness on their peak shear strength is still lacking. This paper presents a methodology where objective measurements of the average aperture of natural, unfilled rock joints are used to estimate their matedness as a step in the prediction of the peak shear strength. This measured average aperture is based on high-resolution optical scanning of the surface roughness. The proposed relationship between measured average aperture and matedness of natural rock joints has been included in a further developed peak shear strength criterion. The verification against ten natural rock joint samples of coarse-grained granite showed that the revised criterion can predict the peak shear strength considering rock joint matedness.

We used a series of thermo-mechanical treatments to study the stability of the solid solution phases in a high-entropy Al0.5CoCrCuFeNi alloy. The solid solution phases were found to be stable, against the intermetallic compounds, at high temperatures >850 degrees C and at low temperatures

  • Release rates of chromium and nickel from 304 and 316 stainless steel during urban atmospheric exposure : a combined field and laboratory study

    • Release rates of chromium and nickel from pickled and skin passed 304 and 316 stainless steel have been determined during a one-year field exposure in an urban environment (Stockholm, Sweden) and through complementary exposures in artificial rain. Measured annual release rates from 304 stainless steel are 0.25-0.3 mg Cr/m(2) and 0.3-0.4 mgNi/m(2), and slightly higher from 316 stainless steel, 0.35-0.4 mgCr/m(2) and 0.7-0.8 mgNi/m(2). The release rates decrease as the rain pH increases and exhibit no direct influence by rain intensity. Variations in release rates are thought to be a result of a non-uniformly attack.

  • Exploring the association between oral health literacy and alexithymia

    • Low health literacy and alexithymia have separately been emphasized as barriers to patient-practitioner communication, but the association between the two concepts has not been explored. Objective: To test the hypothesis that low oral health literacy and alexithymia are associated. Method: Adults (n=127) aged 21-80 years (56% women) participated in this cross-sectional study. Oral health literacy was assessed using the interview-based Adult Health Literacy Instrument for Dentistry (AHLID) with scores from 1-5. The self-administered Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) was used to assess three distinct TAS-20 factors and TAS-20 total score. Results: Significant negative correlations between AHLID scores and TAS-20 factors 2, 3 and TAS-20 total score were found. Regression analyses showed that TAS-20 factor 3, externally-oriented thinking (beta=-0.21, SE=0.02, p=0.017), and TAS-20 total score (beta=-0.18, SE=0.01, p=0.036) were significant predictors of AHLID level. Conclusion: The hypothesis that low oral health literacy is associated with alexithymia was supported. This finding proposes that alexithymia may be considered as a possible factor for low oral health literacy. However, the correlations are not strong, and the results should be regarded as a first step to provide evidence with additional research on this topic being needed.

    • Kiisortoqia soperi gen. et sp. nov. is an arthropod species from the Early Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerst tte of North Greenland. A head, incorporating four appendiferous segments and biramous limbs, with an anteroposteriorly compressed basipod with a spine bearing median edge, support the euarthropod affinities of K. soperi gen. et sp. nov. Similarities with 'short great appendage' arthropods, or megacheirans, like the nine-segmented endopod, and the flap-or paddle-like exopod, may be symplesiomorphies. The antennula, however, resembles in composition and size the anteroventral raptorial appendage of anomalocaridids. Thus, the morphology of K. soperi gen. et sp. nov. provides additional support for the homologization of the anomalocaridid 'great appendage' with the appendage of the antennular or deutocerebral segment of extant Euarthropoda.

    • Background The term Asthma and COPD Overlap (ACO) describes a condition where asthma and COPD overlap. We aimed to investigate associations between ACO and insomnia and respiratory symptoms, and to investigate the prevalence of ACO and the characteristics of subjects with ACO in two Northern European population studies. The study comprised 25 429 subjects aged >40 years who participated in one of two Northern European general population surveys. Both surveys included questions on asthma, COPD, respiratory and sleep-related symptoms, including difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early-morning awakening, and excessive daytime sleepiness. ACO was defined as having both self-reported asthma and COPD. The prevalence of ACO was 1.0%. The group with ACO had a higher prevalence of both insomnia and respiratory symptoms than subjects with only asthma or COPD. Having ACO was independently associated with a 2-3 times higher probability of having sleep-related symptoms as compared with the group without asthma or COPD, after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, smoking history and educational level (adjusted odds ratio 2.14-3.36, 95% CI). Subjects with ACO have a high prevalence of insomnia and respiratory symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the association between sleep-related symptoms and ACO.

  • Effects of pulsatile L-DOPA treatment in the double lesion rat model of striatonigral degeneration (multiple system atrophy)

    • We examined the role of a striatal lesion in the development of L-DOPA-induced abnormal involuntary movements (AlMs) using the double lesion rat model of striatonigral degeneration (SND), the underlying neuropathological substrate of parkinsonism associated with multiple system atrophy (MSA-P), in comparison to a Parkinson's disease (PD) rat model. L-DOPA administration reliably induced AlMs in SND and PD rats in a dose-dependent fashion. AlMs occurred significantly earlier in SND compared to PD rats. There was a mild, but significant, transient increase of orolingual AlMs during the first week of low-dose L-DOPA treatment in SND. Whereas L-DOPA significantly improved contralateral forelimb akinesia in PD rats, there was no beneficial effect in SND rats. Striatal FosB/DeltaFosB up-regulation in SND and PD rats correlated with the severity of L-DOPA-induced dyskinesias. Pulsatile L-DOPA administration in the double lesion SND rat model replicates salient features of the human disease MSA-P, including loss of the anti-akinetic L-DOPA response and induction of dyskinesias with transient orolingual predominance.
