- In this study, 110 Swedish upper secondary students use a historical database designed for research. We analyze how they perceive the use of this digital tool in teaching and if they are able to use historical thinking and historical empathy in their historical writing and presentations. Using case-study methodology including questionnaires, observations, interviews and text analysis we find this to be a complex task for students. Our results highlight technological problems and problems in contextualizing historical evidence. However, students show interest in using primary sources and ability to use historical thinking and historical empathy, especially older students in more advanced courses when they have time to reflect upon the historical material.

- The leading theme of the 2019 Summit of International Society for the Study of Information held 2–6 June 2019 at The University of California at Berkeley was the question “Where is the I in AI and the meaning of Information?” The question addresses one of the central issues not only for scientific research and philosophical reflection, but also for technological, economic, and social practice. The Conference “Morphological, Natural, Analog, and Other Unconventional Forms of Computing for Cognition and Intelligence” (MORCOM 2019) was focused on this theme from the perspective of unconventional forms of computing. The present paper, written by the organizers of the conference, reports the objectives of MORCOM 2019 and provides an overview of the contributions.

- DE OSYNLIGA SYSTEMEN handlar om den kommunala infrastrukturens historia i Sverige och utvecklingen från privata eller halvprivata arrangemang för gator, vatten och sanitet till fullt utvecklade offentliga infrasystem från mitten av 1800-talet och fram till idag. Vi är idag beroende av de tjänster som infrasystemen levererar och det är svårt att tänka sig ett modernt samhälle utan dem. Men när systemen väl var byggda tog vi dem snart för givna, vi glömde bort att sköta om dem, och infrastrukturen dras därför med en mycket omfattande underhållsskuld.En annan sak som bidrar till svårigheterna med att hantera och underhålla de stora infrasystemen är att den tekniska och organisatoriska design som valdes när systemen byggdes påverkar våra möjligheter att anpassa dem till en förändrad verklighet. De fysiska nätverken är gigantiska konstruktioner med en historiskt betingad tröghet, där samhälle och företag investerat väldiga belopp.Infrastrukturen är kort sagt djupt inbäddad i samhället och svår att förändra. Det här gör oss dåligt rustade att hantera framtidens klimatutmaningar. Men vi kommer inte undan att anpassa oss till ett förändrat klimat. Robusta och motståndskraftiga infrasystem är absolut nödvändiga för att mildra effekterna av klimatkrisen. Gator, vatten- och avloppssystem måste rustas upp och förstärkas.Boken belyser de faktorer som har påverkat utformningen av de kommunala infrasystemen och hur den processen lämnat ett historiskt arv som fortfarande påverkar oss. Ambitionen är att synliggöra systemen. Understanding Large-Scale Institutional Change : Social Conflicts and the Politics of Swedish Municipal Amalgamations 1952-1974

- A remarkable reform in modern Swedish political history was the transformation of the local government structure between 1952 and 1974. In a mere 22 years, the number of municipalities was reduced from 2,498 to 277. This study aims to answer how such large-scale reforms could come about politically, particularly since much of the literature on institutions and political reform asserts that carrying out large-scale political change should be a difficult task. Two opposing stories of institutional change are presented: evolutionary accounts, which see the amalgamations as rational adaptations to changing circumstances, are contrasted with a social conflict perspective, which explains amalgamations in terms of their distributional consequences. By investigating the processes leading up to this vast restructuring of Swedish local political geography, we demonstrate that an understanding of these reforms as rational adaptations to changing circumstances, made on the basis of consensus among leading political actors, is not accurate. The reforms were not as uncontroversial and non-conflictual as they often have been portrayed. Our results weaken the evolutionary approach to institutional change, whilst supporting the social conflict perspective.
