  • L’importation de la littérature française: un triple détournement de capital : Réflexions à partir d’une étude de réception journalistique en Suède

    • The background material of the study consists of articles about French literature gathered between 2010 and 2014 in the Swedish press. The aim of the article is to isolate the most widely discussed French literature from France in the Swedish press during the period, in order to explore why the transfer of this literature persists over time, how it is perceived, and which type of mediators bring about this transmission. The study raises questions about the image of French literature in Swedish media, Sweden’s impact on the transnational circulation of literature, and the use of French literature to place Sweden on the literary map.The results of the reception study show that French literature is presented as both aesthetically disruptive with innovative features and as a normative and traditional model. It incarnates an image of tradition as well as of modernity. French literature from France is principally mediated by orthodox journalists with a consistent symbolic capital, and the posture of these journalists is analyzed through Sapiro’s model, inspired by Bourdieu. The orthodox journalists manage to redirect the symbolic capital inherent to consecrated French literature at three levels: national, personal, and transnational. Firstly, the importation of French literature increases Swedish literature’s symbolic capital. Secondly, this transfer allows for an auto-consecration of the orthodox journalists themselves. Thirdly, this use of highly valued imported literature engenders a supplementary consecration (surconsecration) of a national literature and its dominating language. In conclusion, these observed bilateral literary exchanges show the often overlooked importance of peripheral countries in transnational literary transmission. The results modify Casanova’s (2002) model, since they display the impact on the market from the margins. The transfer of central national literatures in dominating languages towards peripheral countries allows for dominated languages and minor national literatures to take an active part in the construction and reconstruction of the relations on the global literary map.

Plus spécifiquement, cet article relève les romanciers de langue française figurant dans les thèses écrites en littérature dans les départements d’études françaises et dans les revues suédoises spécialisées en langue romane entre 2005 et 2016. Même si la représentativité des romans de la France hexagonale s’impose dans ce corpus, le roman francophone semble en voie d’autonomisation. La recherche universitaire se situe indéniablement à l’avant-garde.

    • This special issue consists of five position papers, four articles and two essays covering diverse aspects of the theme Culture on the Move that foregrounds language and literature both as pedagogical tools and disciplinary fields necessary for learning to live and work in a culturally diverse world. The contributions stem from the initial activities within the graduate school “Culturally Empowering Education through Language and Literature” (CuEEd-LL). Centre-staging teaching and learning in Swedish education, the texts in this issue present a range of inroads into how language and literature can be used to support cultural diversity among pupils, students and teachers since cultural diversity is steadily gaining attention both as a resource and a challenge in education and society.

    • This dissertation concerns "Ondes" ("Waves") (1912-1914), the first section of Guillaume Apollinaire’s second collection of poems, Calligrammes (1918). "Ondes" is an important part in the poet’s production, because it was written around 1913. For Apollinaire this year is marked by an extreme creativity and a desire to find a new poetical issue. This thesis argues that in "Ondes", one can observe a competition with the scientist, who, in comparison to the poet, seems to be the most able to create wonders, not poetical ones, but the "marvels of modern technology". Besides, as opposed to the poet, the scientist is socially well considered, even admired, and his inventions concern reality. When Apollinaire compares himself to the scientist, he is questioning his role as a poet in society and in poetry. The first chapter focuses on this problematic and it also considers the strategies that the he launches upon to reinforce his status as a poet. In order to have an impact on real life and to further develop the poetical language, Apollinaire tries to invent as the scientist does. He proceeds in integrating some aspects of science in his artistic activity, such as the scientist’s pragmatic language, his discoveries and his technological creations. For instance, the poet finds strategies, such as the "simultaneity", to express a new concept of time and space and of speed. This poetical renewal is also carried out by different ways to relate text and image. The importance of the image is revealed by the figurative texts in Calligrammes. But the contours of some of the designated objects in these poems are also determining for the purely textual ones. This relation between text and image hasn’t been observed in previous works on Apollinaire. The second chapter examines this aspect and starts out with a discussion of the relation to cubist painting, which aims at distinguishing between literary and pictorial practices. Three objects governing "Ondes" are discussed : La "fenêtre" (the "window"), la "tour" (the "tower") et le "soleil" (the "sun"), presented 1) as drawings, 2) as words and 3) as poetical models that determine the purely textual poem’s final form. These concrete objects contain different dynamics that the poet explores in using them to elaborate the structures of his poems. Consequently the progressive movement of the "sun’s" light waves could be one formal feature, the vertical line of the "tower" another one and, finally, the two sides of the "window", inside and outside, could establish a third dynamic form. In the last two chapters a close reading of two texts from "Ondes" is undertaken: "Les Fenêtres" ("The Windows") and "Les Collines" ("The Hills"). The first poem is the one that Apollinaire considered as the most beautiful among the texts in "Ondes" and the second one is regarded as a poetical manifest. The texts are very different from each other and here they are looked upon in a structural perspective, with a method based on the theories of Jurij Lotman and Michel Riffaterre. This approach allows for a confirmation on a micro-level of the thesis developed in the first chapters. According to this, both poems reveal a discourse reminding of natural science and of the scientist. Both poems also show dynamics reminding of the three dominating images in "Ondes": They progress as the spiral in the centre of Apollinaire’s "sun", recycling elements already employed. They also expose an undulation between opposite points that bring back to the "sun’s" light waves. Finally "Les Fenêtres" imitates an alternation between the inside and the outside of the "window" and "Les Collines" indicates a vertical upward movement, illustrated by the "tower". These results are reached in accentuating the theme of the combat in "Les Collines" and the point of intersection in "Les Fenêtres".

    • Cette étude met au centre la circulation de la littérature dans le monde et s’interroge sur ce qui dans l’œuvre de Beyala attirent les lecteurs en Scandinavie. L’exotisme semble ici être une des raisons les plus importantes. Le développement de sa complexité amène ensuite à observer comment l’exotisme dans l’œuvre de Beyala est reçu en France et en Scandinavie, surtout en Suède. Les différences d’accueil sont en premier à trouver dans la politique du marché du livre, dans les valeurs culturelles et dans la tradition littéraire. Ces critères s’avèrent dicter les prémisses de l’interprétation de l’œuvre.

    • The argumentative genre in social media – a comparison of Wikipedia discussion pages between cultures and between topics.Johansson, Sverker & Lindberg, YlvaThe crowdsourced encyclopediaWikipedia is the 6th most visited of all websites. Wikipedia articles are written in a social process with heated arguments on dedicated discussion pages, one for each Wikipedia article. As Myers (2010) observes, English-language Wikipedians employ traditional means to support their arguments, but also Wikipedia-specific argumentative criteria, such as Neutral Point of View, No Original Research and Verifiability; cf. Androutsopoulos (2006).The structure, openness and global scope of Wikipedia makes it feasible to extract large parallel  corpora of argumentative writing from many different cultures, debating many different topics. In the first stage of our project, we have done a quantitative study of Wikipedia arguments, comparing the volume of debate surrounding the same 1,000 articles on 25 different language versions of Wikipedia. With this data, we compare argumentation, both on the same topic between languages, and between topics in the same language. Preliminary results show that cultural differences in sheer discussion volume are small, but that some interesting patterns are present.In a second stage, we proceed with qualitative analysis of argumentative Wikipedia texts in selected languages. In the qualitative analysis we will present the intersection between standard and Wikipedia-specific argumentation, as well as the cultural transfer of Wikipedia argumentation between language versions.The results will contribute to our knowledge about how digital literacy is related to traditional literacy and how teachers can meet new demands on writing practices, by integrating social media (Baron 2010. Le point commun entre les productions anciennes et celles de SL réside dans la capacité à produire l'illusion d'un espace en trois dimensions à partir d'un support qui n'en a que deux. Par l'ouverture fictive d'un des plafonds du palais ducal de Mantoue, où la vraie lumière d'un ciel bleu semble se propager à l'intérieur de la pièce, le peintre Andrea Mantegna surprend le spectateur: durant au moins une fraction de seconde, celui-ci croit qu'autour de l'orifice, de vrais chérubins regardent, des airs, ce qui se passe dans le palais."                             "De la Belle époque à Second Life" est un livre, le premier de son genre, qui traite du rapport établi entre les notions de créativité artistique, de monde virtuel, de philosophie, d'histoire, de poésie et de sociologie. Clair, bien argumenté et merveilleusement documenté, il a également l'avantage d'être ancré dans une réalité que l'auteur appréhende avec objectivité. L'étude de Y. Lindberg ne néglige en effet aucun des aspects qu'elle doit aborder, et va même plus loin en proposant des ouvertures de la thèse principale à d'autres disciplines, là aussi abordées avec un sérieux et une érudition remarquables. Pour tous les sociologues et les spécialistes du numérique, ou plus simplement pour les intellectuels curieux, une référence.
