The Historian-Filmmaker's Dilemma : Historical Documentaries in Sweden in the Era of Häger and Villius

- This dissertation investigates how history is used in historical documentary films, and argues that the maker of such films constantly negotiates between cognitive, moral, and aesthetic demands. In support of this contention is discussed a number of historical documentaries by Swedish historian-filmmakers Olle Häger and Hans Villius. Other historical documentaries supply additional examples. The analyses take into account both the production process and the representations themselves. The history culture and the social field of history production together form the conceptual framework for the study, and one of the aims is to analyse the role of professional historians in public life. The analyses show that different considerations compete and work together in the case of all documentaries, and figure at all stages of pre-production, production, and post-production. But different considerations have particular influence at different stages in the production process and thus they are more or less important depending on where in the process the producer puts his emphasis on them. In the public service television setting, the tendency to make cognitive considerations is strong. For example, historical documentarists often engage historians as advisors, and work long and hard interpreting visual source materials such as photographs. The Häger and Villius case also indicates that the influence exerted on programmes by aesthetic considerations grows as the filmmaker learns about the medium. Among general conclusions are that it is not always important that the producer be a trained historian. What is crucial is that whoever is to succeed in making fine historical programmes must learn both history and filmmaking, must learn to balance the demands of content and form. Previously, researchers have suggested that historical documentaries function as entertainment, orientation, and restoration; this study adds the functions of interpretation and legitimisation. Finally, the study submits that typically historical documentaries attempt to convey cognitive and moral insights about the past.

- The collaborative project Herbaria 3.0: Telling Stories at the Plant-Human Interfaceunites environmental humanities (EH), experiential learning, and public engagement to explore how the stories we tell about plants illuminate the intertwined nature of plants and people. Storytelling fosters invested engagement with the green world and acts as a counter to the problem of “plant blindness,” or the inability to see and recognize the plants surrounding us. Without seeing the plants in our everyday worlds, we cannot learn to care for them—nor to care for biological diversity at large. Thus, Herbaria 3.0helps mitigate the loss of species by providing a space to share and remember the stories of plants that may be disappearing or changing in response to our anthropogenic climate crises. It also provides a space for humans to mourn these losses and prevent further ones. Herbaria 3.0makes important interventions in “citizen humanities”: the participation of the public in academic domains and the participation of academics in public ones. It also contributes to digital humanities by developing the potential of web-based platforms for fostering an ethics of care—both for nonhuman subjects and the environment at large—and for providing space to collectively mourn the losses of climate change. Finally, it advances the field of EH, particularly its critical plant studies and history of science strands, in order to help us cope with, adapt to, and mitigate climate change.

- This paper is a presentation of a research project that aims at writing the history of computing in Sweden in the mainframe age from a user perspective. Rather than beginning with the history of hardware, this project takes as its point of departure the way in which actors in different sectors of society used computer technology in order to achieve a higher degree of control over crucial processes, whether through electronic data processing systems, process control or technical/scientific computation.

Minuting. Rethinking the Ordinary Through the Ritual of Transversal Listening

- This exploratory essay introduces selected sound recordings along with notes and observations from Minuting – a practice of sonic journaling I have performed daily since July 2010 in numerous locations and settings. I weave these observations together in a way that resonates closely with the idea of repetition, in multiple forms: protest, automation, cycle, and ritual, as well as the repetition inherent to my acts of recording. While introducing sounds from the archive of Minuting, I reflect on how this constrained and systematically enacted form of listening, recording, and re-listening leads to a transversal type of sonic reflexivity. It is a form of alertness to sound that stretches beyond the immediate resonance of the 'now' – towards spatially and temporarily distant, yet to some extent intertwined, objects, subjects, events, and environments. The text evolves across three interrelated layers: annotated recordings from the project's archive, a set of thoughts and associations triggered by re-listening to the material, and a discursive analysis that opens up the project to a dialogue with other thematically resonant debates and practices. Drawing on perspectives from media studies, the philosophy of technology, sound studies and durational art, I discuss Minuting as an art work, a creative constraint and a transversal listening practice. Lastly, I propose it as an existential media technique for composing critical and reflective positions towards one's surrounding space, experience of time, and use of sound technologies.

Ontology as Conceptual Schema when Modelling Historical Maps for Database Storage

- Sweden has an enormous treasure in its vast number of large-scale historical maps from a period of 400 years made for different purposes, that we call map series. The maps are also very time and regional dependent with respect to their concepts. A large scanning project by Lantmäteriverket will make most of these maps available as raster images. In many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, like history, human geography and archaeology, historical maps are of great importance as a source of information. They are used frequently in different studies for a variety of problems. A full and systematic analyse of this material from a database perspective has so far not been conducted. During the last decade or two, it has been more and more common to use data from historical maps in GIS-analysis. In this thesis a novel approach to model these maps is tested. The method is based on the modelling of each map series as its own ontology, thus focusing on the unique concepts of each map series. The scope of this work is a map series covering the province of Gotland produced during the period 1693-1705. These maps have extensive text descriptions concerned with different aspects of the mapped features. Via a code marking system they are attached to the maps. In this thesis a semantic analysis and an ontology over all the concepts found in the maps and text descriptions are presented. In our project we model the maps as close to the original structure as possible with a very data oriented view. Furthermore; we demonstrate how this ontology can be used as a conceptual schema for a logical E/R database schema. The Ontology is described in terms of the Protégé meta-model and the E/R schema in UML. The mapping between the two is a set of elementary rules, which are easy for a human to comprehend, but hard to automate. The E/R schema is implemented in a demonstration system. Examples of some different applications which are feasibly to perform by the system are presented. These examples go beyond the traditional use of historical maps in GIS today

Det våras för journalisten : Symboler och handlingsmönster för den svenska pressens medarbetare från 1870-tal till 1930-tal

- Syftet med denna avhandling är att analysera hur den svenska pressens medarbetare representerades i olika medier från 187o-talet till 193o-talet, hur och varför representationerna förändrades, och hur tidningsrnedarbetare förhöll sig till dem. Representationerna av tidningsrnedarbetare i romaner, noveller, film, presshistoriska arbeten, debatter och karikatyrer formade bilden av yrket i offentligheten. De som var verksamma i pressen försökte kontrollera, förändra och använda dessa representationer för att framställa sig själva som legitima och ttovärdiga. Denna sttävan efter kontroll analyseras med hjälp av Erving Goffmans teori om roller. Med begrepp från Pierre Bourdieu undersöks även hur denna sttävan var en del av olika tidningsrnedarbetares försök att etablera ett journalistiskt fält med regler och kapital som stärkte de egna intressena. Avhandlingens huvudargument är att kampen om kontroll och förändring av representationerna å den ena sidan, och strävan att agera i enlighet med allmänna förväntningar på rollen å den andra, var av stor betydelse för journalisttollens och journalistikens formering och etablering. Perspektivet är kulturhistoriskt snarare än professionssociologiskt. Tidningar, romaner och filmer var arenor där journalistikens regler förhandlades och etablerades. Det som värderades i 1800-talets tidningsvärld var politiska, polemiska och litterära texter, där publicisten gavs utrymme att uttrycka sin personliga ståndpunkt. Underordnade tidningsrnedarbetare hade emellertid inte samma möjligheter att uttrycka och profilera sig. Detta förändrades successivt i 1900-talets början. Tidningarna i massupplaga försökte nu locka läsare med sensationella nyheter, stora rubriker och bilder på förstasidan. Journalisternas uppgift blev att leverera de nyheter som tidningsköparna ville läsa om. Denna marknadslogik blev samtidigt en del av det journalistiska fältets regler. Att hitta och rapportera stora nyheter var ett sätt att utmärka sig och bli erkänd som en riktig journalist som behärskade rollen.
