- Extractive resources are unevenly distributed geographically and our dependence on such resources is growing, which has led to ever increasing flows of resources across the world. This situation has caused concern for numerous actors. However, such worries are not new. Todays’ feel of a deeply interconnected, rapidly changing world with global grand challenges has striking resemblances with the nineteenth century mood in the industrializing countries. In this special issue we study the temporal dynamics and multiple geographies of resource flows, and how actors have attempted to shape and control them. In five articles by historians of technology and the environment from Sweden, Russia and the Netherlands, we aim to broaden the view on resource narratives and emphasize their non-static characters by showing developments of resources as they travel through time and space. This introductory article introduces and positions five themes that are addressed in the contributions of special issue. In this special issue scholars discuss (1) the social construction of resources, (2) the importance of resources to nation states, (3) resource flows as transnational practices, (4) technopolitics of resources, and (5) resource flows as global political power hierarches, of resources such as oil, metals, iron ore, uranium and stone.

- Forskningsöversikten diskuterar fyra böcker som alla behandlar förhållandet mellan historieundervisning och samhälleliga konflikter i olika delar av världen. Till översiktens slutsatser hör att det behövs tydligare historiekulturella perspektiv på så kallade history wars; att det blir svårt att tala om "post-konflikt-samhällen" då alla samhällen har inneboende konflikter som också innefattar synen på historien; samt att ett undervisningsklimat som tillåter friktion mellan olika berättelser förmodligen är att föredra framför nya överslätande narrativ baserade på överenskommelser. Att komma överens om historien kan heller inte förväntas leda till att konflikter mellan olika kulturella grupper upphör. Istället finns anledning att misstänka att orsakssambandet är det omvända: det är enklare att komma överens om historien om de olika kulturella grupperna upplever att de lever under rättvisa förhållanden och respekterar varandra i samtiden.

Famines in medieval and early modern Europe—Connecting climate and society

- The article evaluates recent scholarship on famines in Europe during the medieval and early modern periods (c. 700–1800), synthesizing the state-of-the-art knowledge and identifying both research gaps and interdisciplinary potentials. Particular focus is placed on how, and to what extent, climatic change and variability is given explanatory power in famine causation. Current research, supported by recent advances in palaeoclimatology, reveals that anomalous cold conditions constituted the main environmental backdrop for severe food production crises that could result in famines in pre-industrial Europe. Such food crises occurred most frequently between c. 1550 and 1710, during the climax of the Little Ice Age cooling, and can be connected to the strong dependency on grain in Europe during this period. The available body of scholarship demonstrates that famines in medieval and early modern Europe best can be understood as the result of the interactions of climatic and societal stressors responding to pre-existing vulnerabilities. Recent research has shown that societal responses to these famines, and the appropriation of their consequences, have been much more comprehensive, dynamic, and substantial than previously assumed. The article concludes by providing recommendations for future studies on historical famines.

Samtidigt har oljan och oljerelaterade idéer och praktiker tagit allt större plats inom andra humanistiska discipliner, såsom miljö- och energihumaniora. I denna översiktsartikel introducerar vi den forskning från dessa fält som samlats under begreppet petrokulturer (petrocultures).
