  • Åkerlund, Andreas, 1977- (författare)
  • Mellan akademi och kulturpolitik : Lektorat i svenska språket vid tyska universitet 1906–1945
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to analyze the establishment and development of lectureships in the Swedish language in German universities during the first half of the 20th century. Building on earlier research about the role of language teaching abroad for public diplomacy, the study sees the lecturer as a part of both the the academic and political fields in Germany and Sweden. The establishment of and changes in the system of lectureships in Swedish 1906–1945 are explained through an analysis of the actors involved and of the assets allowing the actors to control both the establishment of lectureships and the appointment of lecturers in Germany.During the Weimar Republic a number of actors were involved in the establishment of the lectureships. They included academics with a scholarly interest in Scandinavian languages and old Norse,, the German state, which worked to promote the study of foreign countries and international academic mobility as a way of breaking German isolation after World War I, and the Swedish organization for the preservation of Swedishness abroad for which the teaching of Swedish abroad was a way of increasing the academic status of the language. After the National Socialist takeover in 1933 the NSDAP and the Swedish foreign ministry also took an interest in the Swedish lectureships in Germany for propaganda purposes. The dissertation shows how a system for the appointment of Swedish lecturers to Germany was established through interaction between the actors. Central in this process were the control over economic assets, a social network which made recommendations of lecturers possible, and the control over communication between both the lecturers and universites and between the German and Swedish states. The study also shows that the uneven distribution of assets between German and Swedish actors resulted in an inferior position for the German state and organizations in relationship to their Swedish counterparts.

  • Humanitarianism in the Modern World : The Moral Economy of Famine Relief
  • 2020
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is an innovative new history of famine relief and humanitarianism. The authors apply a moral economy approach to shed new light on the forces and ideas that motivated and shaped humanitarian aid during the Great Irish Famine, the famine of 1921-1922 in Soviet Russia and the Ukraine, and the 1980s Ethiopian famine. They place these episodes within a distinctive periodisation of humanitarianism which emphasises the correlations with politico-economic regimes: the time of elitist laissez-faire liberalism in the nineteenth century as one of ad hoc humanitarianism; that of Taylorism and mass society from c.1900-1970 as one of organised humanitarianism; and the blend of individualised post-material lifestyles and neoliberal public management since 1970 as one of expressive humanitarianism. The book as a whole shifts the focus of the history of humanitarianism from the imperatives of crisis management to the pragmatic mechanisms of fundraising, relief efforts on the ground, and accounting.

  • De nordiska lekarna : Grannländer i pressen under olympiska vinterspel
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Throughout the 20th century, Nordic audiences consumed mediations of athletes from their own country who were competing against Nordic neighbours at Olympic winter games. In daily newspapers, coverage of the games continuously related to notions of both Nordic and national identities, as well as of the imagined relationship between them. This thesis provides new perspectives on the history of Nordic identity formation by analysing representations of Nordic Neighbours within this coverage, and by focusing on three main themes. Firstly, newspaper texts are shown to reveal norms and customs with regards to how Nordics were supposed to feel about their neighbours’ fates at the games. Secondly, the analyses provide new understandings on how Norden was imagined within a popular cultural framework, thereby acting as a counterweight to previous elite-centred research. Thirdly, and most importantly, the thesis sheds light on how the winter games highlighted the relationship between Nordic and national identities, and how tensions between the two were supposed to be handled according to norms suggested by the newspapers. This was especially true in Finland, Norway and Sweden, whose capitals’ media systems constitute the main study object for this study. In the case of Finland, however, language barriers have forced this thesis to only focus on Swedish-speaking media.Through both quantitative and qualitative readings of the source material, the thesis concludes that Norden emerges as a place on mental maps that is distinguished by its relationship to a certain kind of play. As pointed out by Johan Huizinga, the word “play” translates differently in different languages, and in Norwegian the word “lek” is used to describe both “play” and the “games” of the Olympiad. This thesis highlights the double meaning, concluding that media coverage reflected and constructed the winter Olympics as a Nordic playground, where ambivalences, humorous exchanges, and intra-Nordic competition emerged as nordicity-constituting games.

  • Matts Mattson Paavola knows Elihu Burritt” : A Transnational Perspective on Nineteenth-Century Peace Activism in Northern Europe
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Peace and Change. - : Wiley. - 0149-0508 .- 1468-0130. ; 35:2, s. 191-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing research on Scandinavian peace activism has largely been guided by a traditional nation-state perspective and an institutionalist outlook. This view puts the starting point of Scandinavian peace activism in the 1880s, the time when the first peace associations were established in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The article at hand demonstrates that a new chapter to the history of Nordic peace activism can be added, covering the period from 1843 to the early 1880s. This is achieved by applying a transnational perspective on nineteenth-century peace activism that redirects the focus from national accomplishments and movements to individuals and transnational networks, as well as to the dissemination of ideas on peace.

  • Mental Maps : Geographical and Historical Perspectives
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ‘Mental map’ is a term referring to the way people orientate themselves in their spatial surroundings and how they perceive the world. Alongside ‘cognitive map’, its approximate synonym, the concept of a mental map is established in geography, the behavioral sciences, and psychology. Over the past two decades the idea of mental maps has been adopted by historians in analyzing the construction and dissolution of historical regions, the world views of political elites, and patterns of dominance and subalternity. Despite the resonance the concept of mental maps has had in several disciplines, an international multi-disciplinary conversation on mental maps with an emphasis on cultural patterns is still in its earliest stages. The present special journal issue addresses this situation by bringing together scholars from the fields of history, geography, economics, anthropology, and linguistics, and by using a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods. The idea of this themed issue emerged at a workshop entitled “Mental Mapping – Historical and Social Science Perspectives”, held 12–13 November 2015 at the Institute of Contemporary History, Södertörn University, and the Italian Cultural Institute “C.M. Lerici” in Stockholm. The workshop was arranged by the research project Spaces of Expectation: Mental Mapping and Historical Imagination in the Baltic Sea and Mediterranean Region, a joint venture between Södertörn University and Ca’ Foscari University in Venice.

  • The Paradox of Openness : Transparency and Participation in Nordic Cultures of Consensus
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ‘open society’ has become a watchword of liberal democracy and the market system in the modern globalized world. Openness stands for individual opportunity and collective reason, as well as bottom-up empowerment and top-down transparency. It has become a cherished value, despite its vagueness and the connotation of vulnerability that surrounds it. Scandinavia has long considered itself a model of openness, citing traditions of freedom of information and inclusive policy making. This collection of essays traces the conceptual origins, development, and diverse challenges of openness in the Nordic countries and Austria. It examines some of the many paradoxes that openness encounters and the tensions it arouses when it addresses such divergent ends as democratic deliberation and market transactions, freedom of speech and sensitive information, compliant decision making and political and administrative transparency, and consensual procedures and the toleration of dissent.

  • Nordiskt samarbete i kalla krigets kölvatten : Vittnesseminarium med Uffe Elleman-Jensen, Mats Hellström och Pär Stenbäck
  • 2016. - 1
