  • Building Dynasties, Shaping States : Dynasty and State Formation in Early Modern Europe
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Dynasties and State Formation i Early Modern Europe. - 9789463728751 - 978 90 4855 403 4 ; , s. 7-24
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The introduction discusses the concepts of dynasty and state formation and their interrelated nature. It stresses the need to def ine the concept of dynasty as a kinship group with an acute sense of historical continuity, claiming the right to rule a certain territory and manifesting this claim in political, social and cultural ways; and the related concept of dynasty formation as the acts, conscious or unconscious, whereby such a group achieved and upheld its position as a dynasty, and how that position developed and changed.

  • Dynastic Marriage Spheres in Early Modern Europe : A Comparison of the Danish Oldenburgs and Three Houses of the Empire
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Dynasties and State Formation in Early Modern Europe. - 9789463728751 - 978 90 4855 403 4 ; , s. 187-216
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Princely marriages are here seen as a key component in dynasty formation and dynasty securing. The marriages of the Danish royal house and three houses of the Empire are studied for the period c. 1530–1700. Most of them took place within what can be labelled a Scandinavian-German-Lutheran marriage sphere. It was a highly hierarchized sphere with little contact between top (royal and electoral houses) and bottom (comital houses). The will of a princely couple to let their of fspring continue to lead their lives at an appropriate status level, or a higher if possible, together with confessional considerations, seems to explain more of the marriage pattern than purely political considerations.

  • Historia på frukostbordet. Historiebruk i två nordiska dagstidningar 1987 och 2012
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift. - 0345-469X. ; 133:2, s. 197-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How frequently and in what ways does history figure in daily news media? This study revisits an investigation of history in two leading Scandinavian newspapers, the Danish Politiken and the Swedish Dagens Nyheter, which was undertaken in 1987. Twenty-five years later, the results of this study are compared to an investigation of historical content in the same two newspapers in 2012. The frequency of historical material has not changed over this time period. Something the reader is likely to identify as history turns up around eight or nine times a day. This has not changed over the years. These figures include history as political argument, historical backgrounds in news articles, reviews of books or exhibitions on history, articles on museums and historical (or often rather archaeological) findings, history as entertainment on the “light” pages of the papers, and history in advertisements. Politiken had a more traditional concept of history and national history as a frame of reference was more frequent than in Dagens Nyheter. Both newspapers focused on contemporary history, with a noticeable interest in the Second World War and the post-war period, but the few articles going further back than the twentieth century occurred almost exclusively in Politiken. These findings are discussed in terms of the different needs that history fulfils in modern society and culture. History is often used to provide orientation in contemporary affairs. But often, we use history to visit a foreign world, be it for leisure and entertainment or for a more existential need to mirror ourselves in other people’s lives and other situations. This last usage seems to be diminishing, in newspapers as well as among historians and in society at large.
