  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This study will show and discuss various aspect of the study of poetry in the Swedish compulsory school since the 1840s. Poetry was originally read aloud in the classroom and learnt by heart and it was not until the last decades that poetry was brought to play a different role and the way of attitude gradually changed into a less respectful one. Poetry writing among the students became commonly practiced during the second period. A study of curriculum used shows that poetry in general has had a weak standing. There has also been a lack of educational materials in poetry. Secondly, the study aims to show the image of poetry among teachers. In summary, teachers generally seem to consider poetry as important in school, although difficult to handle. A third aim of the study is to mirror how students evalutate and assess poetry. most students show great difficulties in exprssing their experiences from reading poetry. The majority of them use everyday language and very indistict words. The final part of the study presents methodological aspects of reading and writing poetry as integrated parts of teaching literature and here various examples of the writing of poetry are given. One appendix describes Artur Hazelius as editor for literature anthologies. The ther is a list of poetry for children and youth 1946-1990.

  • 2002
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
The Scandinavian Sporting Tour: A Case Study in Geographical Imagology. Detta är en populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning av forskningsresultaten.

  • Hur gör man en litteraturläsare? : om skolans litteraturundervisning i Sverige, Ryssland och Finland : [rapport från projektet Literary Competence as a Product of School Culture]
  • 2002
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

    • This essay is a study of seal-hunters' terms for the seal in the area around the Gulf of Bothnia and around the Baltic Sea. The purpose is to investigate whether there are noa words present among the seal-hunters' many words for the seal. The basic material consists of approximately 200 different terms for seal, collected from the Swedish-speaking areas around the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia, areas where the seal has been hunted well into the 20th century. These terms have been collected partly from archives and partly from published litterature. From this basic material some twenty or so words have been extracted, which regarding meaning or origin, contain features that are characteristic for noa words in general. Only a few of the terms can with any certainty be said to be noa words. But there are tendencies in the material which point to the existence of linguistic taboos in the world of the seal-hunters. The background to the presence of linguistic taboos, which is very complex, is also discussed here. First and foremost these taboos are based on a faith in the power of the language and the word. There is a fixed relationship between the words and the object/s that they represent and consequently the language acquires the power of invocation. Tabooing should also be seen as one precautionary measure among the many which the seal-hunters were fored to take during the dangerous hunt. Furthermore, the seal-hunters had two different occupations in two completely separate physical environments: they were farmers on land and seal-hunters at sea. The purpose of linguistic tabooing then became to separate the two different environments from each other, to mark the invisible border between the living conditions on land and at sea, with the help of language. Finally, the taboos are part of a religious, supernatural context. In folk belief seals have been seen as drowned people. I have here described a legend which is connected with this belief. The legend says that the seals are the soldiers of Pharaoh, who were turned into seals when they drowned in the Red Sea, after pursuing Moses and the children of Israel out of Egypt. A further example of the fact that the seal ha been placed in a supernatural context is that the head of the seal has been seen as carrier of magical power.

  • Literary Generations and Social Authority : A Study of American Prose-Fiction Debut Writers, 1940-2000 -- A Scholarly Account
  • 2006
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This project was designed to investigate the question of literary authority in the United States during the period 1940-2000. By constructing and then analyzing three cohorts -- 1940, 1955, and 1970 -- of U.S. prose-fiction debut writers we aimed at drawing conclusions about the social authority that attached to literary authority in this period. We wanted to contribute to U.S. literary history a new perspective which drew on Pierre Bourdieu's field model and to lay the empirical basis for further analysis of the role of gender, class, race, ethnicity, and age in the development of the literary field during this period. Moreover, we wanted to give the literary analysis of U.S. prose fiction in the "American Century" a new direction. At present, ten months after the last activities of project members funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, we have published a number of articles that deliver some of the many results from this study, we have a vast amount of data on the three cohorts and built up a data set for further use, and we are well on the way towards a full documentation of the analysis. Our data set is a rich and unique resource for studying authorial careers, and the geometric data analyses of what we call "the spaces of the debut" and "the spaces of fictional worlds" constitute a new type of investigation of authors in U.S. literary studies. We hope that the data collected will be useful for further projects in American literature in Sweden and abroad, as well as being a useful resource for advanced and undegraduate projects.
