- The background material of the study consists of articles about French literature gathered between 2010 and 2014 in the Swedish press. The aim of the article is to isolate the most widely discussed French literature from France in the Swedish press during the period, in order to explore why the transfer of this literature persists over time, how it is perceived, and which type of mediators bring about this transmission. The study raises questions about the image of French literature in Swedish media, Sweden’s impact on the transnational circulation of literature, and the use of French literature to place Sweden on the literary map.The results of the reception study show that French literature is presented as both aesthetically disruptive with innovative features and as a normative and traditional model. It incarnates an image of tradition as well as of modernity. French literature from France is principally mediated by orthodox journalists with a consistent symbolic capital, and the posture of these journalists is analyzed through Sapiro’s model, inspired by Bourdieu. The orthodox journalists manage to redirect the symbolic capital inherent to consecrated French literature at three levels: national, personal, and transnational. Firstly, the importation of French literature increases Swedish literature’s symbolic capital. Secondly, this transfer allows for an auto-consecration of the orthodox journalists themselves. Thirdly, this use of highly valued imported literature engenders a supplementary consecration (surconsecration) of a national literature and its dominating language. In conclusion, these observed bilateral literary exchanges show the often overlooked importance of peripheral countries in transnational literary transmission. The results modify Casanova’s (2002) model, since they display the impact on the market from the margins. The transfer of central national literatures in dominating languages towards peripheral countries allows for dominated languages and minor national literatures to take an active part in the construction and reconstruction of the relations on the global literary map.

- Studien kartlägger litteraturämnen i kandidatuppsatser och avhandlingar i romanska språk i Sverige under tidsperioden 2000-2016. Syftet är att belysa olika litteraturers roll och (o)synliggörande i självständiga arbeten. Ansatsen är deskriptiv och ämnar identifiera mönster och tendenser i materialet. Dessa mönster ska ligga till grund för fördjupade studier av områden med utvecklingspotential i de enskilda romanska språken, i grundutbildning såväl som på avancerad nivå. Materialet är valt för att fånga övergången från grundnivå till forskarnivå i utbildningen. Hypotesen som studien avser att undersöka formuleras av att uppsatser och avhandlingar speglar både undervisningens innehåll och studenters egna intressen. Hur orienterar sig studenters självständiga arbeten med avseende på reproduktion av givna traditioner och/eller innovativa ämnesval? Genom de för språken gemensamma analyskriterierna kön, epok, genre och ursprung visar de övergripande resultaten att manliga författare - företrädesvis vita och döda - starkt dominerar ämnesvalen, att 1900-talet har en stark ställning som epok, att prosagenren, underförstått romanen, är det vanligaste valet samt att franskan och italienskan för fram författarskap från Frankrike och Italien, medan spanskan och portugisiskan uppvisar större internationell bredd, med författarskap från både Latinamerika och den afrikanska kontinenten. Studien ger en inblick i möjliga datainsamlingsmetoder samt ger exempel på hur man i forskning kan presentera kvantitativa data i syfte att belysa mönster, för att därigenom få syn på förbättringsområden inom högre utbildning i romanska språk.

- This special issue consists of five position papers, four articles and two essays covering diverse aspects of the theme Culture on the Move that foregrounds language and literature both as pedagogical tools and disciplinary fields necessary for learning to live and work in a culturally diverse world. The contributions stem from the initial activities within the graduate school “Culturally Empowering Education through Language and Literature” (CuEEd-LL). Centre-staging teaching and learning in Swedish education, the texts in this issue present a range of inroads into how language and literature can be used to support cultural diversity among pupils, students and teachers since cultural diversity is steadily gaining attention both as a resource and a challenge in education and society.

- À travers cette contribution, les auteurs présentent un aperçu de la lecture de la littérature en langue française dans le contexte universitaire littéraire suédois. Plus spécifiquement, cet article relève les romanciers de langue française figurant dans les thèses écrites en littérature dans les départements d’études françaises et dans les revues suédoises spécialisées en langue romane entre 2005 et 2016. Même si la représentativité des romans de la France hexagonale s’impose dans ce corpus, le roman francophone semble en voie d’autonomisation. La recherche universitaire se situe indéniablement à l’avant-garde.

- Cette étude met au centre la circulation de la littérature dans le monde et s’interroge sur ce qui dans l’œuvre de Beyala attirent les lecteurs en Scandinavie. L’exotisme semble ici être une des raisons les plus importantes. Le développement de sa complexité amène ensuite à observer comment l’exotisme dans l’œuvre de Beyala est reçu en France et en Scandinavie, surtout en Suède. Les différences d’accueil sont en premier à trouver dans la politique du marché du livre, dans les valeurs culturelles et dans la tradition littéraire. Ces critères s’avèrent dicter les prémisses de l’interprétation de l’œuvre.

- La position et le rôle de la littérature francophone et transnationale produite dans la périphérie font l’objet de cette étude pilote, qui vise une réflexion sur la world literature à partir des oeuvres qui ne sont pas incluses dans la circulation globale des lettres. Quelles sont leurs positions et leurs conditions sur le marché littéraire et quels rapports entretiennent ces oeuvres avec les littératures locales, ainsi qu’avec la littérature world ? Ces interrogations sont au centre de cette étude d’un cas particulier observé dans la région franco-ontarienne au Canada. Dans cette périphérie, l’oeuvre de l’auteur canadien et burundais Melchior Mbonimpa est à la fois produite et primée, sans pour autant circuler au-delà des frontières de cet espace limité. Le contexte et le contenu de son roman Le Dernier roi faiseur de pluie (2003), primé en 2006, l’année où les prix littéraires internationaux ont privilégié des auteurs transnationaux, sont mis en parallèle, avec l’objectif d’attirer l’attention sur le continuum local-global et sur les liens que construit l’oeuvre entre la périphérie et le centre. D’une part, écartée de la littérature world, l’oeuvre de Mbonimpa contribue néanmoins à construire le fond de cette littérature globale en circulation dont la plus grande part consiste d’oeuvres transnationales, d’autre part, les appartenances périphériques reflétées par le contexte et le contenu du roman étudié suggèrent que l’oeuvre participe également à la construction des espaces littéraires périphériques au Canada et en Afrique.

- Sweden, a literary model in the process of autonomy? The import issues of French language literature in Sweden in XXI centuryThis study offers an in-depth analysis of the reception in the Swedish daily press (2010–2014) of three Francophone authors: Crowther, Taïa, and Thúy. Through a new approach combining concepts like consecrational transfers (Casanova), cultural transfer (Espagne), and ideologic functions (Moura), the analysis reveals Sweden’s efforts to become a consecrating pole. Firstly, while stressing the “difference” as a principal feature of the commented literature, Sweden tries to foreground its own national project to jointly promote diversity, migrancy and cohesion. Secondly, comparing the Francophone literature with its own, Swedish critics manage to consecrate literature from another dominated country. Finally, comparisons with more international references leave space for self-consecration and access to a more dominant position on the market. Thus, the transmitted literature is less at stake than the receiving country’s own image.

- The argumentative genre in social media – a comparison of Wikipedia discussion pages between cultures and between topics.Johansson, Sverker & Lindberg, YlvaThe crowdsourced encyclopediaWikipedia is the 6th most visited of all websites. Wikipedia articles are written in a social process with heated arguments on dedicated discussion pages, one for each Wikipedia article. As Myers (2010) observes, English-language Wikipedians employ traditional means to support their arguments, but also Wikipedia-specific argumentative criteria, such as Neutral Point of View, No Original Research and Verifiability; cf. Androutsopoulos (2006).The structure, openness and global scope of Wikipedia makes it feasible to extract large parallel corpora of argumentative writing from many different cultures, debating many different topics. In the first stage of our project, we have done a quantitative study of Wikipedia arguments, comparing the volume of debate surrounding the same 1,000 articles on 25 different language versions of Wikipedia. With this data, we compare argumentation, both on the same topic between languages, and between topics in the same language. Preliminary results show that cultural differences in sheer discussion volume are small, but that some interesting patterns are present.In a second stage, we proceed with qualitative analysis of argumentative Wikipedia texts in selected languages. In the qualitative analysis we will present the intersection between standard and Wikipedia-specific argumentation, as well as the cultural transfer of Wikipedia argumentation between language versions.The results will contribute to our knowledge about how digital literacy is related to traditional literacy and how teachers can meet new demands on writing practices, by integrating social media (Baron 2010. - Abstract The study focuses on the circulation of literature in the world and it takes as an example the publication of the literary works of Beyala in Scandinavia. The reception of her novels is analyzed on the basis of commentaries by critics in Swedish media. The analysis shows that the Swedes construct their own image of the author. In order to find interpretation tools they link her texts to their own literary patrimony and they take into account the exoticism inherent in her novels. It thus becomes legitimate, apt to serve current debates in Sweden, for example about feminism and cultural diversity.
