    • A zebrafish, the hull of a miniature ship, a mathematical equation and a food chain - what do these things have in common? They are examples of models used by scientists to isolate and study particular aspects of the world around us. This book begins by introducing the concept of a scientific model from an intuitive perspective, drawing parallels to mental models and artistic representations. It then recounts the history of modelling from the 16th century up until the present day. The iterative process of model building is described and discussed in the context of complex models with high predictive accuracy versus simpler models that provide more of a conceptual understanding. To illustrate the diversity of opinions within the scientific community, we also present the results of an interview study, in which ten scientists from different disciplines describe their views on modelling and how models feature in their work. Lastly, it includes a number of worked examples that span different modelling approaches and techniques. It provides a comprehensive introduction to scientific models and shows how models are constructed and used in modern science. It also addresses the approach to, and the culture surrounding modelling in different scientific disciplines. It serves as an inspiration for model building and also facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations by showing how models are used in different scientific fields. The book is aimed primarily at students in the sciences and engineering, as well as students at teacher training colleges but will also appeal to interested readers wanting to get an overview of scientific modelling in general and different modelling approaches in particular.

  • Microbiomes of the dust particles collected from the International Space Station and Spacecraft Assembly Facilities

    • Background - The International Space Station (ISS) is a unique built environment due to the effects of microgravity, space radiation, elevated carbon dioxide levels, and especially continuous human habitation. Understanding the composition of the ISS microbial community will facilitate further development of safety and maintenance practices. The primary goal of this study was to characterize the viable microbiome of the ISS-built environment. A second objective was to determine if the built environments of Earth-based cleanrooms associated with space exploration are an appropriate model of the ISS environment. Results - Samples collected from the ISS and two cleanrooms at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, Pasadena, CA) were analyzed by traditional cultivation, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and propidium monoazide–quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PMA-qPCR) assays to estimate viable microbial populations. The 16S rRNA gene Illumina iTag sequencing was used to elucidate microbial diversity and explore differences between ISS and cleanroom microbiomes. Statistical analyses showed that members of the phyla Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were dominant in the samples examined but varied in abundance. Actinobacteria were predominant in the ISS samples whereas Proteobacteria, least abundant in the ISS, dominated in the cleanroom samples. The viable bacterial populations seen by PMA treatment were greatly decreased. However, the treatment did not appear to have an effect on the bacterial composition (diversity) associated with each sampling site. Conclusions - The results of this study provide strong evidence that specific human skin-associated microorganisms make a substantial contribution to the ISS microbiome, which is not the case in Earth-based cleanrooms. For example, Corynebacterium and Propionibacterium (Actinobacteria) but not Staphylococcus (Firmicutes) species are dominant on the ISS in terms of viable and total bacterial community composition. The results obtained will facilitate future studies to determine how stable the ISS environment is over time. The present results also demonstrate the value of measuring viable cell diversity and population size at any sampling site. This information can be used to identify sites that can be targeted for more stringent cleaning. Finally, the results will allow comparisons with other built sites and facilitate future improvements on the ISS that will ensure astronaut health.

    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for noninvasive studies of micrometer-scale structures in biological tissues via their effects on the time- and frequency-dependent (restricted) and anisotropic self-diffusion of water. While new designs of time-dependent magnetic field gradient waveforms have enabled disambiguation between different aspects of translational motion that are convolved in traditional MRI methods relying on single pairs of field gradient pulses, data analysis for complex heterogeneous materials remains a challenge. Here, we propose and demonstrate nonparametric distributions of tensor-valued Lorentzian diffusion spectra, or “D(ω) distributions,” as a general representation with sufficient flexibility to describe the MRI signal response from a wide range of model systems and biological tissues investigated with modulated gradient waveforms separating and correlating the effects of restricted and anisotropic diffusion.

  • Observed CN and HCN intensity ratios exhibit subtle variations in extreme galaxy environments

    • We use both new and archival ALMA data of three energy lines each of CN and HCN to explore intensity ratios in dense gas in NGC 3256, NGC 7469, and IRAS 13120-5453. The HCN (3-2)/HCN (1-0) intensity ratio varies in NGC 3256 and NGC 7469, with superlinear trends of 1.53 ± 0.07 and 1.55 ± 0.05, respectively. We find an offset to higher HCN (3-2)/HCN (1-0) intensity ratios (∼0.8) in IRAS 13120-5453 compared to NGC 3256 (∼0.3-0.4) and NGC 7469 (∼0.3-0.5). The HCN (4-3)/HCN (3-2) intensity ratio in NGC 7469 has a slope of 1.34 ± 0.05. We attribute the variation within NGC 3256 to excitation associated with the northern and southern nuclei. In NGC 7469, the variations are localized to the region surrounding the active galactic nucleus. At our resolution (∼700 pc), IRAS 13120-5453 shows little variation in the HCN intensity ratios. Individual galaxies show nearly constant CN (2-1)/CN (1-0) intensity ratios. We find an offset to lower CN (2-1)/CN (1-0) intensity ratios (∼0.5) in NGC 3256 compared to the other two galaxies (∼0.8). For the CN (3-2)/CN (2-1) intensity ratio, NGC 7469 has a superlinear trend of 1.55 ± 0.04, with the peak localized towards the active galactic nucleus. We find high (∼1.7) CN (1-0)/HCN (1-0) intensity ratios in IRAS 13120-5453 and in the northern nucleus of NGC 3256, compared to a more constant ratio (∼1.1) in NGC 7469 and non-starbursting regions of NGC 3256.

  • Investigating episodic accretion in a very low-mass young stellar object

    • Very low-mass Class I protostars have been investigated very little thus far. Variability of these young stellar objects (YSOs) and whether or not they are capable of strong episodic accretion is also left relatively unstudied. Aims. We investigate accretion variability in IRS 54 (YLW52), a Class I very low-mass protostar with a mass of M∗ ∼ -0.2 M⊙. Methods. We obtained spectroscopic and photometric data with VLT/ISAAC and VLT/SINFONI in the near-infrared (J, H, and K bands) across four epochs (2005, 2010, 2013, and 2014). We used accretion-tracing lines (Paβ and Brγ) and outflow-tracing lines (H2 and [Fe II]) to examine physical properties and kinematics of the object. Results. A large increase in luminosity was found between the 2005 and 2013 epochs of more than 1 magnitude in the K band, followed in 2014 by a steep decrease. Consistently, the mass accretion rate (Macc) rose by an order of magnitude from ∼10-8 M⊙ yr-1 to ∼10-7 M⊙ yr-1 between the two early epochs. The visual extinction (AV) has also increased from ∼15 mag in 2005 to ∼24 mag in 2013. This rise in AV in tandem with the increase in Macc is explained by the lifting up of a large amount of dust from the disc of IRS 54, following the augmented accretion and ejection activity in the YSO, which intersects our line of sight due to the almost edge-on geometry of the disc. Because of the strength and timescales involved in this dramatic increase, this event is believed to have been an accretion burst possibly similar to bursts of EXor-type objects. IRS 54 is the lowest mass Class I source observed to have an accretion burst of this type, and therefore potentially one of the lowest mass EXor-type objects known so far.

  • A search for transiting planets around hot subdwarfs: I. Methods and performance tests on light curves from Kepler, K2, TESS, and CHEOPS

    • Context. Hot subdwarfs experienced strong mass loss on the red giant branch (RGB) and are now hot and small He-burning objects. These stars constitute excellent opportunities for addressing the question of the evolution of exoplanetary systems directly after the RGB phase of evolution. Aims. In this project we aim to perform a transit survey in all available light curves of hot subdwarfs from space-based telescopes (Kepler, K2, TESS, and CHEOPS) with our custom-made pipeline SHERLOCK in order to determine the occurrence rate of planets around these stars as a function of orbital period and planetary radius. We also aim to determine whether planets that were previously engulfed in the envelope of their red giant host star can survive, even partially, as a planetary remnant. Methods. For this first paper, we performed injection-and-recovery tests of synthetic transits for a selection of representative Kepler, K2, and TESS light curves to determine which transiting bodies in terms of object radius and orbital period we will be able to detect with our tools. We also provide estimates for CHEOPS data, which we analyzed with the pycheops package. Results. Transiting objects with a radius ≤ 1.0 R⊕ can be detected in most of the Kepler, K2, and CHEOPS targets for the shortest orbital periods (1 d and shorter), reaching values as low as ∼0.3 R⊕ in the best cases. Sub-Earth-sized bodies are only reached for the brightest TESS targets and for those that were observed in a significant number of sectors. We also give a series of representative results for larger planets at greater distances, which strongly depend on the target magnitude and on the length and quality of the data. Conclusions. The TESS sample will provide the most important statistics for the global aim of measuring the planet occurrence rate around hot subdwarfs. The Kepler, K2, and CHEOPS data will allow us to search for planetary remnants, that is, very close and small (possibly disintegrating) objects.

  • Role of tectonics and climate on elevated arsenic in fluvial systems : Insights from surface water and sediments along regional transects of Chile

    • Globally, arsenic (As) contamination is widespread in hydrological systems and the link between As enrichment and regional tectonic and climatic factors is still not well understood in orogenic environments. This work provides new insights on the relationship between As, tectonics, and climate by assessing the hydrochemistry of Chile, an active subduction zone with highly diverse natural settings. Selected study sites include fluvial courses along four regional transects connecting the Chilean coast to the Andes Cordillera in the northern, central, and southern areas of the country.The results indicate that As concentrations in surface water and fluvial sediments show a general positive correlation to crustal thickness and they tend to decrease progressively from northern to southern Chile. In contrast, As concentrations are negatively correlated to average annual precipitation which shows a significant increase toward southern Chile. From a regional tectonic perspective, northern Chile presents greater Andes shortening and higher crustal thicknesses, which induces increased crustal contamination and As content at the surface. Extremely low precipitation rates are also tied to local As enrichment and a sediment-starved trench that might favor higher plate coupling and shortening. On the contrary, decreased shortening of the Andes in southern Chile and related lower crustal thickness induces lower crustal contamination, thus acting as an As-poor provenance for surficial sediments and surface water. High precipitation rates further induce dilution of surface water, potential mobilization from the solid phase, and a significant amount of trench sediments that could induce lower plate coupling and lower shortening.At the local scale, a low potential for As mobilization was found in northern Chile where a greater distribution of As-bearing minerals was observed in sediments, mostly as finer particles (<63 mu m). The abundance of Fe -oxides potentially acts as a secondary surficial sink of As under the encountered physicochemical conditions.
