  • Observing as an Essential Facet of Mindfulness : A Comparison of FFMQ Patterns in Meditating and Non-Meditating Individuals
  • 2013
  • In: Mindfulness. - : Springer. - 1868-8527 .- 1868-8535. ; 4:3, s. 203-212
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • One of the most comprehensive measures of mindfulness is the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) with five factors-Observing, Describing, Acting with awareness, Non-judging, and Non-reactivity. Hierarchical confirmatory factor analyses, however, have suggested that only four of the FFMQ factors (i.e. all except Observing) were components of "an overall mindfulness construct"-which is puzzling because Observing represents a core aspect of all definitions of mindfulness. The purpose of the present study was to approach this problem by a person-oriented approach, focusing on patterns on the FFMQ scales, rather than linear associations between them. Data on the FFMQ were collected on 817 individuals. Cluster analysis according to the LICUR procedure was used to group these participants in 13 clusters, according to their profiles of scores on the five FFMQ scales. Of the participants, 325 were categorized as meditators and 317 as non-meditators. To test hypotheses about the relation between Observing and mindfulness (which we assumed should be higher among meditators), the meditators/non-meditators categorization was cross-tabulated with the FFMQ clusters. The results showed that all clusters in which meditators were over-represented had high scores on Observing, and all clusters in which meditators were under-represented had low scores on Observing-which supports the hypothesis that mindfulness is related to high levels of Observing. The relationship between Observing and Non-judging, however, was found to be more complex than expected. The results are discussed in terms of mindfulness seen as a multidimensional skill, which may develop differently in various subgroups of individuals.

  • Effectiveness of guided internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy for depression in routine psychiatry : A randomized controlled trial
  • 2019
  • In: Internet Interventions. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-7829. ; 17
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Depression is one of the most common health problems worldwide but is often undertreated. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy(ICBT) appears to be an effective treatment option, with the potential to reach a larger proportion of individuals suffering from depression. While many studies have examined the efficacy of ICBT for depression in randomized controlled trials, fewer have focused on the effectiveness of ICBT when used as an integral part of routine health care. In this study the effectiveness of an 8-week ICBT program was examined when delivered in a routine psychiatric setting. A total of 108 patients were referred and 54 were then included and randomized to either ICBT or a waitlist control condition. The sample had a lower education level and a higher proportion of individuals were on sick leave than comparable previous efficacy trials of ICBT for depression conducted in Sweden. Measures assessing depression, anxiety and psychiatric symptoms were administered before and after treatment, follow up was performed at 6- and 12 months after treatment had ended. ICBT resulted in significant reductions of depressive symptoms in the treatment group when compared to a waitlist control group with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.6). Treatment gains were maintained at 6- and 12 months after the treatment had ended. In terms of clinical significance, 58% of the sample had improved or recovered after treatment. The study was small, and patients received general psychiatric care after the ICBT treatment had ended which limits the implications. We conclude that ICBT appears to be an effective treatment for depression when delivered as an integral part of routine psychiatric care.

  • Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire-Reliability and Factor Structure : A Swedish Version
  • 2011
  • In: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 1650-6073 .- 1651-2316. ; 40:4, s. 291-303
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Two studies were conducted to assess the Swedish version of the Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), which was originally created by Baer et al. (2006). The aim of Study 1 was to examine the psychometric properties of the FFMQ using data from 495 individuals. Quantitative and qualitative analyses resulted in a reduction of the scale by 10 items. Psychometric properties, including internal consistency of the revised instrument, were examined. The Swedish FFMQ provides results comparable to those obtained by Baer. Cronbach’s alphas were high for all the facets. The Swedish FFMQ appears to be a potentially useful tool in measuring mindfulness among Swedish participants. The aim of Study 2 was to test the suggested hierarchical five-factor solution and construct validity, using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Similar to findings for the English version of the FFMQ, the CFA showed that the Observing facet was not a significant part of an overall self-reported mindfulness structure in a Swedish population with little meditation experience. © 2011 Copyright Swedish Association for Behaviour Therapy.

  • Psychometric properties of an insomnia-specific measure of worry : the anxiety and preoccupation about sleep questionnaire
  • 2011
  • In: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1650-6073 .- 1651-2316. ; 40:1, s. 65-76
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Anxiety and Preoccupation about Sleep Questionnaire (APSQ), with a focus on factorial validity and internal consistency as well as discriminative, convergent, and association with sleep parameters and daytime impairment. Among a randomly selected sample from the general population (N = 5,000), 2,333 participants completed a survey on nighttime symptoms, daytime symptoms, health outcomes, and psychological processes. The study sample consisted of 1800 participants who did not fulfill criteria for another sleep disorder than insomnia. A two-factor solution, accounting for 70.7% of the variance, was extracted from the 10 APSQ items. One six-item factor determined worries about the consequences of poor sleep (a = .91); the second factor, with four items, assessed worries about the uncontrollability of sleep (a = .86). The two factors were significantly intercorrelated (ρ = .65) and significantly associated with the total APSQ (ρs = .97 and .76, respectively). The APSQ and the two subscales showed discriminant validity between three sleep status groups (normal sleep, poor sleep, and insomnia disorder; R2 = .33-.41). The APSQ and the subscales demonstrated convergent validity with measures on cognitive arousal, sleep-related beliefs, anxiety, and depression. They also were significantly correlated with sleep parameters and daytime impairment. The findings suggest that the APSQ is a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing worry in insomnia.

  • Psychological Science within a Three-Dimensional Ontology
  • 2018
  • In: Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1932-4502 .- 1936-3567. ; 52:1, s. 52-66
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The present paper outlines the nature of a three-dimensional ontology and the place of psychological science within this ontology, in a way that is partly similar to and partly different from that of Pérez-Álvarez. The first dimension is the material realities, and involves different levels (physical, chemical, biological, psychological, etc.), where each level builds on a lower level but also involves the development of new emergent properties, in accordance with Bunge’s emergent materialism. Each level involves systems, with components, structures and mechanisms, and an environment. This dimension can be studied with natural scientific methods. The second dimension is the subjective-experiential realities, and refers to our subjective perspective on the world. In accordance with Husserl’s phenomenology, it is argued that this subjectivity does not exist in the world (i.e., should not be reified as an object among other objects), but represents a perspective on the world that we enter in our capacity as conscious human beings. Essential characteristics of this subjectivity (such as intentionality, temporality, embodiment, and intersubjectivity) can be explored by phenomenological methods. The third dimension is the social-constructional realities, and includes social institutions, norms, categories, theories, and techniques. It is argued that psychological science spans over all three dimensions. Although almost all psychological research by necessity starts from a problem formulation where the subjective-experiential dimension plays an essential role (either explicitly or implicitly), most of present-day psychological research clearly emphasizes the material dimension. It is argued that a mature psychological science needs to integrate all three dimensions.

  • Psykologin som vetenskap : Vetenskapsteoretiska och forskningsmetodologiska grunder
  • 2018
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
