  • Modelling the Relationship Between Values, Intentions and Behavior : A Simultaneous LISREL Analysis Over Time
  • 1998
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Translation of own norms and perception of parents' and friends' values into actual behaviour were studied in the context of the theory of reasoned action. A LISREL model based on this theory was constructed, and the fit and generalizability of the model tested across gender and time. The same norm questionnaire assessing adolescents' own values, their own intentions and actual behavior and perception of parents' and friends' was administered to two samples of approximately 15-year-old adolescents on two occasions (in 1969 and in 1995, in the same town). A LISREL model with an acceptabel fit was obtained, and its structural parameters indicated a strong relationship between adolescents' own evaluations, own intentions and actual behavior. The model was also tenable acorss gender and time. No significant differences were found between groups across gender and time with regard to the four parameters of the structural part of the model which indicate the relationships bwtween the latent variables.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A basic proposition for this chapter's presentation and discussion is that the individual is an active, purposeful part of an integrated, complex, and dynamic person-environment system. Our position is that, as a fundamental prerequisite for success, empirical research must start with a careful analysis of the phenomena relevant to the specific problem under study. With reference to this proposition, the main part of this chapter is devoted to an attempt to analyze the structures and processes involved in the operation of person-environment systems and the way in which the individual functions and develops within this general type of system. The main thesis emphasizes the close dependency of individual functioning and individual development on the social, cultural, and physical characteristics of the environment. At the end of the chapter, certain methodological and research strategy implications of the theoretical analysis will be presented.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we examine issues related to the development of antisocial behavior, using data from three ongoing Swedish longitudinal projects. A correlational strategy is contrasted with a configurational approach. The correlational analyses reveal quite high temporal rank-order stabilities of behavioral problems, for both sexes, and also long-term statistical connections between childhood problems and adolescent and adult adjustment problems. However, these associations are of a modest size. This is to be expected in view of the operation of processes of a more temporary nature and of the timing of adjustment problems. It is argued here that a configurational approach, simultaneously taking into consideration relevant aspects of the individuals' risk panorama, offers a perspective on developmental pathways that is not provided by common multivariate approaches. Results from this more personcentered approach show the strong impact of adolescent multirisk patterns on future criminality and on drug and alcohol abuse. Findings also reveal that individual personal resources in adolescence may quite strongly reduce the risk of developing future criminality and drug and alcohol abuse for multiproblem individuals.

  • Perception of threatening consequences of anxiety-provoking situations
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Anxiety Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0891-7779. ; 4:2, s. 141-166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three studies are presented, addressing the issue of classifying and measuring situational anxiety in terms of threatening consequences. A classification system for categorizing free descriptions of anxiety-provoking situations is presented in Study 1. The underlying theoretical rationale for the scheme is a situation-outcome contingency model of anxiety appraisal which stresses the nature of the expected consequences in threat-provoking situations. The classification system covers the major types of physical-bodily, personal-interpersonal, and societal consequences that may be expected to emanate from confrontation with anxiety-provoking situations. The psychometric properties of the classification are examined. A cross-validation of the classification system, using another method for data collection as well as for data treatment, is reported in Study 2. Study 3 analyses the usefulness of the classification system for predicting subjects' self-reported anxiety for a variety of verbally described situations. The utilization of consequence analyses of situations for measuring anxiety appraisal is discussed.
