  • Trans* Activism in Indonesia and Iran : Working Against Misrecognition and Enhancing the Intelligibility of Trans* Subjectivities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Studies in Gender and Sexuality. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1524-0657 .- 1940-9206. ; 25:1, s. 49-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a case study of trans activism based on qualitative data in Indonesia and Iran, drawing on the existing public discourses as well as discourses and practices among activists. The article consolidates the work of Nancy Fraser on the politics of recognition, while it uses Judith Butler’s ideas on intelligible and unintelligible subjects to argue how the workings of recognition and misrecognition of trans* status affect the liveability of trans* people and how they are constituted as intelligible and unintelligible subjects in society.

  • Deep Learning With DAGs
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Social science theories often postulate causal relationships among a set of variables or events. Although directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are increasingly used to represent these theories, their full potential has not yet been realized in practice. As non-parametric causal models, DAGs require no assumptions about the functional form of the hypothesized relationships. Nevertheless, to simplify the task of empirical evaluation, researchers tend to invoke such assumptions anyway, even though they are typically arbitrary and do not reflect any theoretical content or prior knowledge. Moreover, functional form assumptions can engender bias, whenever they fail to accurately capture the complexity of the causal system under investigation. In this article, we introduce causal-graphical normalizing flows (cGNFs), a novel approach to causal inference that leverages deep neural networks to empirically evaluate theories represented as DAGs. Unlike conventional approaches, cGNFs model the full joint distribution of the data according to a DAG supplied by the analyst, without relying on stringent assumptions about functional form. In this way, the method allows for flexible, semi-parametric estimation of any causal estimand that can be identified from the DAG, including total effects, conditional effects, direct and indirect effects, and path-specific effects. We illustrate the method with a reanalysis of Blau and Duncan’s (1967) model of status attainment and Zhou’s (2019) model of conditional versus controlled mobility. To facilitate adoption, we provide open-source software together with a series of online tutorials for implementing cGNFs. The article concludes with a discussion of current limitations and directions for future development.

  • The Rainbow Runners : A Sleddog Adventure
  • 2021. - 1
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The Rainbow Runners is a true story of a sled dog adventure told by Alaskan Husky, Nija JaJa, the youngest member of the team, who along with her “Uncle Buncles” and brother set out to follow a dream to participate in a long-distance race through the mountains.   The story takes place in the white-capped mountains of Sweden. The book begins with a dream to prepare for a 250-kilometer long distance sled dog race through the Swedish Mountains. With fewer dogs in the team than is common for such a race, the team begins their journey with an uphill battle. During preparations for the race the dogs experience what it means to build a team, and not just a functioning team, but a team that is flexible and adaptable to changing conditions; a team that is built on recognizing and celebrating the unique strengths in each team member; and a team that keeps sight on their own dream, even when others doubt their ability.Among the issues focused on in the book are teambuilding, vision, goal setting and strategic planning, diversity, and leadership.

  • Iconoclastic controversies exhibition : A visual sociology of statues and commemoration sites in the southern part of Cyprus
  • 2015
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The photographs, taken in the southern regions of Cyprus, investigate the monuments, landmarks and statues that are part of the everyday life of Greek Cypriots. “The statues are vehicles of communication. They are vehicles of ideology, of information. It’s the entire object that also becomes a medium”, explains the professor. These photographs analyse how statues and commemoration sites narrate and frame the Cyprus Problem, and how they in many cases contain references to the “Self” and the “Other” by presenting a heroic “self” to the “own” community, or by showing the suffering of the “self”. But the exhibition also investigates how some (exceptional) statues undermine this presentation of the “self” and offer a different narrative of the conflict, and the identities of the people involved. “The logics of war and conflict often makes us believe that there is a homogenous community that is identical. And that is part of the problem, actually, because it hides the diversity that is so important. Showing these internal differences is very important in dealing with conflicts like in the Cyprus Problem”, notes professor Carpentier. He continues: “the project shows how important and how traumatic the Cyprus Problem is. The Cyprus Problem scratched the Cyprus soul, it really went very deep. The statues are ways of dealing with that”.

  • A Circular Argument : A Creative Exploration of Power and Space
  • 2021
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Uniquely combining two parts, one critical in the form of a research piece, and the other creative in the form of a fictional novel, this ground-breaking book spans creative writing, criminology and architecture to look at the ways in which power and hierarchies are explored and exploited in space.Part one, A Circular Argument, is informed by a series of reflections on the author’s work as a prison teacher. Delving into the obsession with the circular as an architectural gesture and as a concept combining containment and transparency, the author examines spatial hierarchies across time, from the ideal planned city of the Middle Ages, to the all-seeing eye of modern digital society.Part two, The Out, follows the fictional story of a disgruntled architect, a clever prisoner and an ingenious escape plan. Exploring how the complications and surprises of human interaction colour and change the supposedly watertight systems of social control society designs, the novel disrupts how we might think about space and power.Injecting new energy and creative perspectives into traditional academic research, this practice-led book is an innovative exploration between critical and creative approaches, and between multiple social and spatial hierarchies.

  • Parents with mental retardation and family resources: the narrative of social exclusion in the conditions of extreme poverty [the sample from Republic of Moldova]
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scientific journal of the National Pedagogical Dragomanov University. Series 19: Special Education and Psychology. - Kyiv, Ukraine. - 2310-0893. ; :26, s. 433-441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article is analyzing a problem of family resources in the family of single father with mental retardation upbringing two adolescents in the conditions of extreme poverty. Research methodology based on the model of the case study qualitative research within the phenomenological “life world” and hermeneutics approaches. The study has gotten whole description of the father’s “life world” and its structural and essential elements constituting it. It is shown that family “life world” is structured by experience of coping with the extreme poverty within the context of strong social exclusion, and is controlled by the father’s family story and has class socio-economic nature. Family resources such as: health, education, social context and economic conditions of the family and its members are characterized as being affected by different type of limitations and dependence on external “donor’s” sources. The discussion is lifting up the moral-ethical problem of special education and “universal” values and what role should they play in the process of structuring essential elements of ” the life world”  experience in such families.

  • New applications of 3D modeling in artefact analysis : three case studies in Viking Age brooches
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences. - Springer : Berlin. - 1866-9557 .- 1866-9565. ; 8:4, s. 651-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning is a nondestructive and versatile technique that provides archaeologists with 3D models of archaeological and ethnographic objects. We have previously shown that 3D models facilitate shape analysis of archaeological bones and stone tools, due to the high measurement accuracy inherent in the latest generation of 3D laser scanners. Here, we explore the utility of 3D modeling as a tool for analyzing Viking Age metal artefacts with complex morphologies. Four highly ornate Viking Age brooches from Scandinavia and Russia were digitized with a portable laser scanner, and the resulting 3D models were used in three case studies of (a) artefact reconstruction, (b) tool mark analysis, and (c) motif documentation. The results revealed both strengths and limitations of the employed techniques. 3D modeling proved to be very well suited for artefact reconstruction and was helpful also in the stylistic and motif analysis. The tool mark analysis was only partially successful, due to the resolution limits of the laser scanner used. 3D-based motif analysis of a grandiose Scandinavian-style brooch from Yelets, Russia, identified an anthropomorphic figure with a bird-like body that previously has been overlooked. This figure may be a Rurikid coat of arms, possibly linking the object to a princely household and providing further evidence for a connection between Scandinavia and the Rurikids. As 3D technology keeps improving, we expect that additional applications for 3D modeling in archaeology will be developed, likely leading to many new findings when old objects are re-analyzed with modern techniques. However, our results indicate that 3D modeling cannot completely replace traditional artefact analysis—instead, we argue that the two approaches are best used in combination.
