  • Building Collaborative Learning: Exploring Social Annotation in Introductory Programming
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - International Conference on Software Engineering. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 0270-5257. - 9798400704987 ; , s. 12-21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing demand for software engineering education presents learning challenges in courses due to the diverse range of topics that require practical applications, such as programming or software design, all of which are supported by group work and interaction. Social Annotation (SA) is an approach to teaching that can enhance collaborative learning among students. In SA, both students and teachers utilize platforms like Feedback Fruits, Perusall, and Diigo to collaboratively annotate and discuss course materials. This approach encourages students to share their thoughts and answers with their peers, fostering a more interactive learning environment. We share our experience of implementing social annotation via Perusall as a preparatory tool for lectures in an introductory programming course aimed at undergraduate students in Software Engineering. We report the impact of Perusall on the examination results of 112 students. Our results show that 81% of students engaged in meaningful social annotation successfully passed the course. Notably, the proportion of students passing the exam tends to rise as they complete more Perusall assignments. In contrast, only 56% of students who did not participate in Perusall discussions managed to pass the exam. We did not enforce mandatory Perusall participation in the course. Yet, the feedback from our course evaluation questionnaire reveals that most students ranked Perusall among their favorite components of the course and that their interest in the subject has increased.

  • Critical Imaginaries and Reflections on Artificial Intelligence and Robots in Postdigital K-12 Education
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Postdigital Science and Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2524-485X .- 2524-4868 .- 2662-5326. ; 1:2, s. 427-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is commonly suggested that emerging technologies will revolutionize education. In this paper, two such emerging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and educational robots (ER), are in focus. The aim of the paper is to explore how teachers, researchers and pedagogical developers critically imagine and reflect upon how AI and robots could be used in education. The empirical data were collected from discussion groups that were part of a symposium. For both AI and ERs, the need for more knowledge about these technologies, how they could preferably be used, and how the emergence of these technologies might affect the role of the teacher and the relationship between teachers and students, were outlined. Many participants saw more potential to use AI for individualization as compared with ERs. However, there were also more concerns, such as ethical issues and economic interests, when discussing AI. While the researchers/developers to a greater extent imagined ideal future technology-rich educational practices, the practitioners were more focused on imaginaries grounded in current practice.

  • Mathematical reasoning and beliefs in non-routine task solving
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Current State of Research on Mathematical Beliefs XX. - Falun : Högskolan Dalarna. - 9789185941933
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores low performing upper secondary school students’ mathematical reasoning when solving non-routine tasks in pairs. Their solutions were analysed using a theoretical framework about mathematical reasoning and a model to study beliefs as arguments for choices. The results confirm previous research and three themes of beliefs are used by the student. These themes are safety, expectations, and motivation. The results also show a connection between beliefs and imitative reasoning as a way to solve non-routine tasks.

  • Pragmatiska studier av meningsskapande
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Utbildning och Demokrati. - 1102-6472 .- 2001-7316. ; 17:3, s. 11-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall aim of the article is to present a pragmatic approach for studies of meaning-making used in the articles of this issue. The approach, which is developed within the SMEDgroup (Studies of Meaning-making in Educational Discourses), mainly builds on the writings of John Dewey, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Michel Foucault. A common ambition for the researchers in SMED is to enable studies and discussions on questions concerning how meanings are made in people’s actions. Another ambition is to carry out these studies beyond assumptions of dualism, essentialism, causality and determinism. In this perspective learning and socialization are viewed in a communicative perspective. We argue in the article that our approach makes it possible, and important, to study meaning-making in action in different kinds of educational practices.

  • Adult Education Teacher’s Perception Of Gamification Implemented In Distance Education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 4th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI), 8th and 9th of November 2021. - Barceló Sevilla Renacimiento, Sevilla, Spanien : IATED. - 9788409345496
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses perceptions of educational gamification and its potential opportunities for reducing student dropout and teacher workload. Interviews of nine teachers and their technology acceptance were studied in conjunction with the implementation of a gamified online system during 2019, fully designed for distance education. Results indicate perceptions of reduced workload, prevention of students from handing in late, and facilitating activity in courses. However, perceptions of clear suspicion towards Educational Gamification also related acceptance as insufficient for behavioural intent until very conclusive result demonstrations of behavioural performance are available to the teachers. Implications for lifelong learning and ethical concerns are briefly discussed.

  • Students’ Mathematical Reasoning and Beliefs in Non-routine Task Solving
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1571-0068 .- 1573-1774. ; 15, s. 759-776
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beliefs and problem solving are connected and have been studied in different contexts. One of the common results of previous research is that students tend to prefer algorithmic approaches to mathematical tasks. This study explores Swedish upper secondary school students’ beliefs and reasoning when solving non-routine tasks. The results regarding the beliefs indicated by the students were found deductively and include expectations, motivational beliefs and security. When it comes to reasoning, a variety of approaches were found. Even though the tasks were designed to demand more than imitation of algorithms, students used this method and failed to solve the task. © 2016 Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan

  • Changing Perspectives on Physical Education in Sweden : Implementing Dimensions of Public Health and Sustainable Development
  • 2014. - 1
  • Ingår i: Physical Education and Health. - Urbana, Illinois, USA : Sagamore Publishing. - 9781571677020 ; , s. 463-475
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Health was introduced as part of physical education (PE) in Sweden in 1994. This chapter focuses on both transformational processes and the lack thereof in PE and in physical education teacher education (PETE) in Sweden with the introduction of "health." Prior to that PE focused entirely on different bodily movements for about 170 years, and the demanded changeover has been markedly lagging. At the same time, scientific development within the field of physical activity and health has been strong during the past two decades. Presently, the PETE at The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH in Stockholm, Sweden, is undergoing changes with the aim of creating a merger of perspectives from old, mainly sports-oriented, traditions in PE with newer individual and population health-related perspectives to a wider perspective of physical activity. These new perspectives are framed within diverse dimensions of the environment: for example, how the physical environment affects levels of physical activity and well-being and the need for sustainable development. The rationale for the latter perspective is that the contexts of bodily movement can affect the environment both positively and negatively and are thereby closely linked to both individual and public health. The transformational process described is still in an early state, and clearly future developmental steps are needed, some of which are described in the final section.

  • Professional development at national scale : Effects on teacher knowledge and practice
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Studies in Educational Evaluation. - : Elsevier. - 0191-491X .- 1879-2529. ; 83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a Swedish nation-wide professional development on participating teachers’ teaching practice and their knowledge, where collegial work, as a central part of the professional development, is taken into account as a factor to influence the outcome. We conducted statistical analyses (linear mixed models) on observational and interview data from a random selection of 105 teachers (grades 1–10/primary and secondary school). The results show effects on several aspects of teacher knowledge and teacher practice. However, the results show no connections between how the teachers have worked collegially and the observed changes in the teacher's knowledge and practice. © 2024 The Authors
