  • The role of intermediary objects of learning in early years chemistry and physics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Early Childhood Education Journal. - : Springer Netherlands. - 1082-3301 .- 1573-1707. ; 48:5, s. 585-595
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall aim of the present study is to study model-based teaching and collaborative inquiry learning of chemical processes and physical phenomena in preschool, with a specific focus on the verbal communication established between teachers and children (4-5 years old). According to variation theory, learning is always directed at a specific content, called the object of learning. This study aims at highlighting what ‘threatens’ the teacher’s and preschool children’s intersubjectivity during the teaching of chemistry and physics content, and at discussing possible ways to continue the teaching of an object of learning, once sufficient intersubjectivity in a teaching/learning situation has been lost. The result shows the need for the teacher to divide and split a larger object of learning, such as e.g. water purification, into smaller learning steps ‘on the way’ in order to hinder breaks in intersubjectivity that otherwise may arise. We introduce the notion of ‘overarching object of learning’ and ‘intermediary object of learning’, and the intermediary objects of learning identified in this study are categorized as belonging to three different themes: the role of words, the role of theoretical models and science concepts and the role of analogies and abstractions. The teacher’s awareness of intermediary objects of learning as critical aspects for children’s individual learning is crucial for the teaching of everyday science in a preschool setting.

  • Play-responsive teaching in early childhood education
  • 2019
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This open access book develops a theoretical concept of teaching that is relevant to early childhood education, and based on children’s learning and development through play. It discusses theoretical premises and research on playing and learning, and proposes the development of play-responsive didaktik. It examines the processes and products of learning and development, teaching and its phylogenetic and ontogenetic development, as well as the ‘what’ of learning and didaktik. Next, it explores the actions, objects and meaning of play and provides insight into the diversity of beliefs about the practices of play. The book presents ideas on how combined research and development projects can be carried out, providing incentive and a model for practice development and research. The second part of the book consists of empirical studies on teacher’s playing skills and examples of play with very young as well as older children.Table of contentsPart IDeveloping Play-responsive Didaktik – Mission Impossible?Learning, Teaching, and DidaktikPlaying, Playworlds, and Early Childhood EducationA Combined Research and Development ProjectPart IIThe Lava-Shark: Teachers Attempting to Enter Children’s PlayThe Lion and the Mouse: How and Why Teachers Succeed in Becoming Participants in Children’s Ongoing PlayGoldilocks and Her Motorcycle: Establishing Narrative FramesThe Triangle-Lady and Billy Goats Gruff: Constituting Contents for Learning in PlayWhen Kroko-the-Crocodile Got SickThe Magical Fruits: Establishing a Narrative Play Frame for Mutual Problem SolvingThe Letter Thief: From Playing to Teaching to Learning to PlayingPart IIIA Play-responsive Early Childhood Education didaktik

  • New Initiatives for Building Education for Sustainability in Initial Early Childhood Teacher Education in Sweden - Critical Aspects and Noticeable Needs
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Australian Journal of Teacher Education. - : Social Science Press. - 0313-5373 .- 1835-517X. ; 47:5, s. 67-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is an identified need for research capable of enhancing understanding of effective practice in the embedding of Education for Sustainability (EfS) in Initial Early Childhood Teacher education (IECTE). Research further finds that innovative teaching strategies are needed to build new teachers' capacity to prepare future citizens to manage critical sustainability challenges. This study meets this need by investigating how EfS is implemented in two IECTE programmes at two Swedish universities where EfS is embedded throughout the years of study, and the learning students demonstrate at the end of the programmes in relation to EfS. Findings reveal that students demonstrate a range of understandings related to EfS and the role of the early childhood teacher in EfS. Findings further suggest there is an overall need to deepen IECTE students' EfS theoretical and pedagogical content knowledge to enable them to close a gap between the theory and teaching of EfS in early childhood education settings.

  • Naturvetenskapens bärande idéer : för förskollärare
  • 2020

  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim of this thesis is to increase knowledge of how the teaching mission can be understood and realised in preschool as an educational practice. The main research questions are: 1. How can teaching be realised in preschool daily practice? 2. How is preschool teachers’ specific responsibility for teaching expressed during collegial meetings? 3. In what way does preschool teachers’ didactical leadership emerge during collegial meetings? The thesis is based on four articles. Each one of the articles answers specific research questions. The data for study 1 and 2 were gathered through observations, video filming and field notes. Three preschool teachers and 12 children participated in substudies 1 and 2. The observations focused on preschool teachers’ actions and how these influenced children’s meaning making. Substudy 1 focused on preschool teachers’ teaching in relation to three different activities. It shows different didactical consequences that teaching leads to in relation to children’s meaning making. Substudy 2 explored how preschool teachers’ habits influenced and limited teaching in relation to preschool curriculum goals. The analysed activities were outdoor activities, with a specific focus on sand play. The theoretical perspective used for the data analysis in substudies 1 and 2 was John Dewey’s pragmatism. The data in substudies 3 and 4 were gathered through non-participant observation and audio recording of seventeen collegial meetings. Five qualified preschool teachers, one unqualified preschool teacher and one preservice preschool teacher participated in substudies 3 and 4. Some of the collegial meetings were led by the principal and a pedagogical mentor. The focus for substudy 3 was on the challenges expressed by the preschool teachers in relation to their own teaching responsibility. Substudy 4 explored what didactical questions the preschool teachers discussed during the collegial meetings and how these could be related to preschool teachers’ didactical leadership. Basil Bernstein’s theory of pedagogic practice was used to analyse the results of substudies 3 and 4. The results of the four substudies show how preschool teachers’ actions create both possibilities and constraints for children’s meaning making. The opportunities for meaning making were limited when children’s actions were only confirmed or when the purpose of an activity was unclear for the participating children. On the other hand, when preschool teachers’ actions expanded ongoing activities by introducing new elements, children’s opportunities for meaning making increased. Furthermore, the results show how preschool teachers’ specific responsibility for teaching is toned down by the preschool teachers themselves. Instead, a shared pedagogical responsibility in the team is considered most important. Nevertheless, preschool teachers express challenges in relation to a shared pedagogical responsibility, especially when a common understanding for the pedagogical practice is missing in the team as a whole. Furthermore, they express a lack of full legitimacy to lead other colleagues. A conclusion that can be drawn from the study’s result is that preschool is embedded in what Bernstein describes as an invisible pedagogy. As a result of this, it may be challenging for preschool teachers to establish didactical leadership and subsequently take on their own specific responsibility for teaching.

  • Children’s collaborative learning of evaporation scaffolded by iPads
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reports on a project aiming to extend the current understanding of how emerging technologies, i.e. iPads, can be used in pre-schools to support collaborative learning of real-life science phenomena. The importance of this is associated with the “west world” problem of current educational systems to respond to the needs of modern youth. Educational systems are currently in need of reform (Fullan, 2007, Thulin, 2011; Tytler, 2007). Research on the potential of web-based technologies to support collaborative inquiry-based science learning in schools, with a special interest in inquiry-based science learning is here continued by investigating the role of time-lapse and stop-motion animations in developing children’s understanding of science phenomena. We report on a study of groups of children working with evaporation. A video-based qualitative analysis of the communication in the pre-school groups has given rise to a number of categories used to distinguish and identify variations of children’s expressed experiences in discussions during group work in different contexts. An enhanced and focused reasoning about the natural science phenomenon in group discussions where the iPad is involved and used for stimulated recall is reported. Furthermore, it is shown that children communicate extensively about practical issues and problem solving, in stop-motion producing contexts, but less about the science phenomenon. However, when the children participate in real-time experimentation, the communication focuses more around the phenomenon itself and less about practical issues. Hence, again establishing the importance of real-time experimentation for children’s science learning. The analysis of the empirical data from the first phase of the project is on going and will be completed during the first months of 2015.  The final results will be presented at the conference.

  • Fysik och kemi i fokus för kommunikationen mellan lärare och barn i förskolan
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ATENA Didaktik. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 2003-3486.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
