  • Problem Gambling in the Fitness World - A General Population Web Survey.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 17:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The world of sports has a complex association to problem gambling, and the sparse research examining problem gambling in athletes has suggested an increased prevalence and particularly high male predominance. The present study aimed to study frequency and correlates of problem gambling in populations with moderate to high involvement in fitness or physical exercise. This is a self-selective online survey focusing on addictive behaviors in physical exercise distributed by 'fitness influencers' on social media and other online fitness forums to their followers. Respondents were included if they reported exercise at least thrice weekly, were above 15 years of age, and provided informed consent (N = 3088). Problem gambling, measured with the Lie/Bet, was studied in association with demographic data, substance use, and mental health variables. The occurrence of lifetime problem gambling was 8 percent (12 percent in men, one percent in women). In logistic regression, problem gambling was associated with male gender, younger age, risky alcohol drinking, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and less frequent exercise habits. In conclusion, in this self-recruited population with moderate to high fitness involvement, problem gambling was moderately elevated. As shown previously in elite athletes, the male predominance was larger than in the general population. The findings strengthen the link between problem gambling and the world of sports.

  • Unexcused absence from physical education in elementary school. On the role of autonomous motivation and body image factors.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Body image. - : Elsevier. - 1740-1445 .- 1873-6807. ; 45, s. 229-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical education (PE) is an essential school subject due to its potential to promote well-being and health in all children. Yet, PE stands out among other subjects in terms of truancy. This study is one of the first to examine if unexcused absence from PE is associated with early adolescents' body image and autonomous motivation towards PE. A total of 526 Swedish 6th graders (Mage = 12.28, SD = 0.31) reported the frequency of unexcused absence from PE and answered questions about aesthetic and functional body image, social physique anxiety, and autonomous motivation. Findings showed that unexcused absence from PE was associated with less autonomous motivation and higher social physique anxiety. Participants who had never been absent reported higher functional body image investment and satisfaction. Analyses showed that whereas the aesthetic aspects of body image were associated with decreased autonomous motivation toward PE, functional aspects predicted higher autonomous motivation. The study sheds novel light on the links between absence from PE, body image, and autonomous motivation. As absence may have real-life practical effects for school achievement, health, and well-being, the findings demonstrate the importance of mitigating social physique anxiety and promoting an inclusive and body positive PE context early on.

  • Evaluation of a mindfulness intervention for Paralympic leaders prior to the Paralympic Games.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International journal of sports science & coaching. - : SAGE Publications. - 1747-9541 .- 2048-397X. ; 13:1, s. 62-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents an evaluation of the effectiveness of an applied mindfulness intervention for stress reduction delivered to Paralympic leaders prior to the Paralympic Games. The intervention group of Swedish Paralympic leaders (n = 10) received a mindfulness intervention of eight web-based seminars, while a Norwegian reference group (n = 6) received no intervention. Three assessments were performed for both samples: at baseline, post-intervention and six weeks post-intervention. The evaluation indicated intervention effects of higher psychological flexibility (p = .03), less rumination (p = .02) and lower perceived stress (p = .001), and offers initial support for the applied usefulness of a web-based mindfulness training program as a supplement in stress-reduction programs for elite sport leaders. General challenges from an applied sport psychology perspective related to the implementation of mindfulness interventions in samples with experienced high levels of stress and perceived time-constraints are discussed.

  • Positive emotions are not simply the absence of the negative ones : Development and validation of the Emotional Recovery Questionnaire (EmRecQ)
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Sport psychologist. - : Human Kinetics Publishers Inc.. - 0888-4781 .- 1543-2793. ; 24, s. 468-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to psychometrically evaluate the Emotional Recovery Questionnaire (EmRecQ) and to describe athletes’ individual response patterns in five repeated assessments using the EmRecQ. Three samples were used. Samples 1 and 2 consisted of 192 and 379 (Mean age 16.4 years, SD = 0.7 and Mean age: 17.0 years, SD = 1.1) elite athletes from different sports. The third sample consisted of 20 (Mean age: 21.3, SD = 19.0) female elite basketball players. The EmRecQ is a 22-item questionnaire that assesses Happiness, Security, Harmony, Love, and Vitality. Results showed acceptable weighted omega reliability and construct reliability. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the a priori specified five-factor correlated model. Case profiles of repeated assessments revealed individual response patterns of the separate EmRecQ subscales that corresponded well with rated training load and total quality of recovery. The findings provide support for the EmRecQ’s psychometric properties and applied usefulness.

  • Psychology within the Paralympic Context - Same, Same or Any Different?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Olympic Coach. ; 25:3, s. 15-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article focuses on the psychological challenges faced by disabled athletes competing in the Paralympic Games, as explained within the framework of Self-Determination Theory. It advises coaches and sports psychologists to develop a nuanced mindset about physical difference for them to provide psychosocial support to disabled athletes. It also informs them that they can employ Acceptance Commitment Therapy to help Paralympians deal with the stresses of performing in stressful situations.

  • Building the "team behind the team" : A 21-month instrumental case study of the Swedish 2018 FIFA World Cup team
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Sport Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1041-3200 .- 1533-1571. ; 35:3, s. 521-546
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we provide a novel account of the selection and development of a staff team for the Swedish national men's football team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. A total of 37 interviews took place at six time points over a 21-month period to track the values-based steps taken by the national Head Coach to build his support team. The sample was employed in a variety of roles including Head Coach, Assistant Head Coach, Goalkeeping Coach, Mentor to the Head Coach, Performance Analyst, Sports Psychologist, three Scouts, and a Team Manager. The data are presented in a temporal manner and organized according to three core values which were espoused by and later adopted as a value system by the support team: candor, humility, community. The data provide novel insight into the recruitment, formation, and development of the support team underpinned by a value system promoted by the Head Coach using candor, humility, and community. The presentation of longitudinal reflections from the Head Coach and members of the staff team during their build-up to, and excellent performance at the World Cup finals offer a significant contribution to knowledge regarding how a values-led approach was experienced in elite sport. The findings offer salient implications for research and practice. Lay summary: This is a case study of the selection, formation, and development of a support team for the Swedish national football team over 21 months before the men's 2018 FIFA World Cup. We explored the values-led leadership approach of the Head Coach across this period, presenting data from interviews over time-related to the impact of this values-led approach on the "team behind the team" in the build-up to and during the World Cup.Applied implications Psychologists and coaches might benefit from adopting a values-led approach to recruitment and ways of working. The values of candor, humility, and community were effectively articulated and role modeled by the leader and subsequently adopted by members of the support team. Although the specific values may not be suitable, the processes and critical moments that defined this adoption process might be valuable for others to reflect on. Values systems might benefit from "stress testing" over a period of time that is characterized by the relative stability of personnel and consistency of value messaging.

  • Nonverbal post-shot celebrations and their relationship with performance in elite handball
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. - 1612-197X .- 1557-251X. ; 16:3, s. 235-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonverbal behaviour has an important function in team sports, but research is limited. Adopting a psychological momentum (PM) framework, this study explores the relationship between a team’s history of events, nonverbal post-shot celebrations in the form of gestures and touch shown by the shooter after scoring, and subsequent team performance during handball matches. A naturalistic design with systematic observation was chosen for the present study. Based on an existing coding scheme, 616 post-shot periods from 18 high-stake matches of the highest league in Sweden were analysed. Results showed that the better a team’s prior performance, the more gestures were displayed after scoring in the following period. A high degree of touch when playing well, and a low degree of touch when playing poorly were related to positive subsequent team performance, while, showing much touch when playing poorly, or showing little touch when playing well were related to negative subsequent team performance. The amount of displayed gesture and touch alone was not significantly related to subsequent team performance. To conclude, nonverbal post-shot celebrations were related to subsequent team performance, but only when the ongoing history of events was taken into account, and only for touch. Based on these results, the history of events emerges as an important variable when the dynamics of ongoing team sport matches are investigated. Furthermore, touch, compared to gesture, seems to be of more importance for subsequent team performance. As expected when investigating complex phenomena in ongoing matches, the findings resulted in small effect sizes.

  • Idrott och integration : lättare sagt än gjort?
  • 2019
