Cracking the Body’s Armour : Young People´s Need for Musical Experiences in a Rational Society
- 2010
-
Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
- The aim of this article is to problematize young people’s desires for musical experiences in Western society by theoretically analyzing such needs from a deep psychological as well as a sociological perspective. The rationalized society and new patterns of socialization form the foci of analysis. Further, special emphasis is placed on understanding and analyzing the causes of the high volume of music played at rock concerts and music festivals. Music is a medium that allows young people to get in contact with and process the deep psychological patterns that, in contemporary society, are often repressed by hard rationality. It is claimed that new patterns of socialization have made it more difficult for adolescents to establish contact with, and to integrate into, the pre-oedipal mental layer, which is a prerequisite for growth, achieving a greater degree of maturity, and the progression to and realization of new life phases.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- PurposeOver the last couple of decades, health has become a central part of the subject content in physical education (PE) curricula in many countries. As a result, issues of health have been foregrounded much more clearly in the teaching of PE. The aim of this study was to explore how Swedish PE teachers make sense of health in relation to their teaching practices. This was done through investigating conceptions and theories about health in the teachers' descriptions of their teaching practices.Design/methodology/approachThe data analyzed in this paper were collected through focus group and individual interviews with PE teachers in the grades 7-9 within compulsory schools in Sweden. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis.FindingsFour dominant themes were identified in the data: 1) Health as a healthy attitude, 2) Health as a functional ability, 3) Health as fitness, 4) Health as mental wellbeing. There is a clear impact from healthism and obesity discourses on the teachers' accounts of health, but there is also an impact from holistic views and approaches to health. The authors contend that teachers should be explicit in what they mean by health in relation to what they teach, how they teach and why they teach health in a certain way.Originality/valueThe knowledge produced by this study is crucial since teachers' assumptions regarding health affect the subject content (what), the pedagogies (how), as well as the reasons (why) they teach health and therefore what students learn regarding health.

Function Based Manning and Aspects of Flexibility

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The aim of the article is to examine the concept of flexibility from a shipping perspective. Flexibility is examined in order to develop strategies, theoretical and applicable, in the field of Function Based Manning (FBM), for achieving optimized manning, which is not the same as reduced manning, with a healthy crew. This is a complex concept in many aspects. Based on research on working life and work organizations conducted by social scientists, two aspects of flexibility are examined; functional flexibility including job enrichment and competence training, and working time flexibility. These issues are analyzed from a shipping perspective. The concept is double-edged in the sense that it entails both having flexibility and being flexible. Does flexibility only serve the interests of the employer? Or, do workers also benefit from flexibility? By combining these two aspects of flexibility, a win-win situation benefiting both employers and employees can be achieved. This article highlights and discusses strategies intended to promote the implementation of amodel of optimized manning.

Dimensions of Everyday Resistance: An Analytical Framework
- 2016
-
Ingår i: Critical Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0896-9205 .- 1569-1632. ; 42:3, s. 417-435

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Since James Scott introduced the concept of everyday resistance' in 1985, research has grown within partly overlapping fields. Existing studies utilize very different definitions, methodologies and understandings of everyday resistance', which makes a systematic development of the field difficult. In previous work, the authors have suggested a theoretical and definitional framework where everyday resistance is understood as a specific kind of resistance that is done routinely yet is not publicly articulated with political claims or formally organized. A more comprehensive and systematic exploration of this challenging phenomenon is possible through an analysis where: repertoires of everyday resistance are taken into account, together with relations between actors, as well as the spatialization and temporalization of resistance. These analytical dimensions are explained and motivated through illustrations from existing research. Finally, it is argued all four dimensions need to be studied in intersections.
