Det andra syftet är att ge en grundläggande kunskap om den "nya" barndomssociologin som teori och metod - både i praktiskt arbete med den här gruppen barn samt deras familjer och i forskning.

Legitimacy Work : Managing Sick Leave Legitimacy in Interaction

- This thesis studies how sick leave legitimacy is managed in interaction and develops an empirically driven conceptualization of ‘legitimacy work’. The thesis applies an ethnomethodological framework that draws on conversation analysis, discursive psychology, and membership categorization analysis. Naturally occurring interaction is examined in two settings: (1) multi-party meetings at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, in which participants assess and discuss the ‘status’ of the sick leave and plan for work rehabilitation; (2) peer-based online text-in-interaction in a Swedish forum thread that gathers people on sick leave.The thesis shows how mental states, activities and alternative categories function as resources for legitimacy work. However, such invocations are no straight-forward matter, but impose additional contingencies. It is thus crucial how they are invoked. By detailed analyses of the interaction, with attention to aspects such as lexicality and delivery, the thesis identifies a range of discursive features that manage sick leave legitimacy. Deployed resources are also subtle enough to be deniable as legitimacy work, that is, they also manage the risk of an utterance being seen as invested or biased.While legitimate sick leave is a core concern for Swedish policy-making, administration, and public debate on sick leave, previous research has for the most part been explanatory in orientation, minding legitimacy rather than studying it in its own right. By providing detailed knowledge about the legitimacy work that people on long-term sick leave do as part of both institutional and mundane encounters, the thesis contributes not only new empirical knowledge, but a new kind of empirical knowledge, shedding light on how the complexities of sick leave play out in real-life situations.Traditional sociological approaches have to a significant extent treated legitimacy as an entity with beginnings and ends that in more or less direct ways relate to external norms and cognitive states, or that focus on institutions, authority or government. By contrast, the herein emerging concept ‘legitimacy work’ understands legitimacy as a locally contingent practicality – a collaborative categorially oriented accomplishment that is integral to the interactional situation.

- Barn som upplevt pappas våld mot mamma kan i dagens Sverige ses som brottsoffer. Tvister om vårdnad, boende och umgänge ska lösas med barnens bästa för ögonen och i enlighet med barnkonventionen beakta barns inställning med hänsyn till deras ålder och mognad. I papret vill vi belysa dessa frågor i dialog med såväl barndomssociologins diskussioner om barns aktörskap som samtida diskussioner om barn som upplever mäns våld mot kvinnor i sin familj. Syftet är vidare att problematisera frågan om barns delaktighet utifrån frågan om ’barn’ som en social position och ett kulturellt fenomen i samhällets ålders- och generationsordning och vilken betydelse detta kan få för professionellas tolkningar och bemötande av barn som upplever pappas våld mot mamma. De empiriska exemplen hämtas från ett pågående explorativt forskningsprojekt om barn som sociala aktörer i möten med vårdnads-, boende-, umgängesutredare.

- Domestic Violence, Family Law and School discusses the ways in which domestic violence can impact on children's lives at pre-school and school. Disputes over parental responsibility, living arrangements or child contact can create difficulties not just for the child of disputing parents, but for all children at preschool or school, as well as for staff. This book uncovers new research on an under-explored area of children's lives and social work with vulnerable children and is shaped by a comparative lens that brings both similarities and differences between England, Wales and Sweden into focus. A theoretical framework for analyses of how welfare systems tackle domestic violence is elaborated and lessons for practice that can be drawn from the findings presented are highlighted

Economic hardship in childhood : Children's agency in processes concerning families with scarce resources

- This paper presents some theoretical discussions and initial empirical results from a research project aiming at analysing children’s experiences of living in economic hardship in Sweden. The newly started project is focusing on children´s own perspective, their experiences in everyday life in various social contexts, and their financial and social strategies in interaction with other children, their parents and professionals at school and in the social welfare agencies. What does economic hardship mean to children in terms of material conditions, social relations, school work, identity or wellbeing? Which scope of agency do children see and how do they use it? How do the legal framework and the practices at school and at social welfare agencies construct the child (of various age and gender), the mother and the father in this kind of cases? Are children seen as actors, victims, consumers or objects of their parents responsibility as providers? Are children allowed a scope of action in the financial decision making processes in their family and / or in the welfare agencies? If so, what kind of agency and what happens when they participate? Which kind of interpretative framework concerning children’s actions is used by the adults involved in the interaction with the children? This paper will present initial findings from analyses of the legal processes concerning social welfare to families with children, focusing on the eventual scope of agency for children. The empirical work is conducted in two different municipalities in Sweden and will include interviews and a survey with children from three age categories (6-7, 11-12, 15-16), their parents (single as well as two parent families), school staff and social welfare officers. The project draws on childhood sociology, and research on gender, organization and professions.
