  • 2024
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2023
  • In: Aveiro Congress Centre, European Flute Council, January 26 - 29, 2023.
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • A festival with focus on European flute music (EFC Event) in connection with a conference on artistic research (Crosswinds), where Hagberg contributed with three performances: Jan 26: Solo Recital with new music for Contrabass Flute, Bass Flute and electronics. Jan 28: Premiere of the composition “The Circle is One” for “FLUTUA” (Aveiro Flute Ensemble.) Jan 29: Lecture/Workshop in improvisation from Hagbergs method of mindful, qualitative practice. The purpose was to present new music for Bass and Contrabass Flutes including extended techniques and electronics in a tonal and rhythmic context. In addition to the solo recital, a new piece for a mixed flute ensemble was premiered. During a lecture, Hagberg also introduced his approach to improvisation and qualitative practice which was relevant for the mostly classical players in the audience. The outcome was very positive and has led to new international synergies and engagements.

  • 2023
  • In: Skövde Konsthall, February 23, 2023. Bari (Italy) Muratcentoventidue October 14, 2023..
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Two new compositions by Anders Hagberg, commissioned by Carolina Jonsson for the two-part video, Gränsland 1 (2021), and Gränsland 2 (2023). The thematic starting point for these videos is a series of generic sculptures of children created in the 1940’s and 50’s. At this time just after the war, public art was often used to educate people and create a common narrative for a better future. The children in these sculptures, mostly naked young girls seen through the eyes of male artists, became symbols of hope for a better tomorrow, but also a symbol of health and the natural order of things. These sculptures got Carolina Jonsson thinking about how she, as a female artist, would choose to portray a child today, and how a child today would want to be portrayed. The answer, she realized, was anything but simple. In a time when we are surrounded by an unprecedented flow of images, and people´s self-awareness is at an all-time high, the child's encounter with the camera becomes ambivalent. The pure joy of a child playing is present, but also glimpses of insecurity, self-awareness, and self-control. This becomes especially visible in the second part, Gränsland 2, which was filmed earlier this year. Here the child has become a teenager. The teenager’s desire to be a child and to play is still apparent, but not without a conflict of interest, making the playing soft and beautiful as well as aggressive and frustrated. The music for Gränsland 1, is based on the rhythm and joy of the dancing child. The pulse and articulation were creating the starting point for a solo improvisation on Bass flute. Gränsland 2 is a soundscape for acoustic instruments, samples and electronics which has darker rhythmic elements with an underlying threat.

  • NFA Convention - Beyond Borders : National Flute Association Convention 2023
  • 2023
  • In: Phoenix/AZ, USA. NFA, August 3 -8, 2023.
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • I was invited as a soloist to the National Flute Association, NFA convention/USA for a solo concert and one as a soloist with a rhythm section. It is the world's largest festival with a focus on the flute and the theme of 2023 was "Beyond Borders, to celebrate the cultural and artistic diversity." In addition to presenting Swedish music in the USA, the conference is important for an extended network with the international flute environment, which has led to synergies with other artists, universities and institutions. On August 3rd, I participated as a soloist during Late Night Jazz and chose to play my own arrangement of the composition Tutu together with a double bassist and conga player. It worked perfectly and the setting was very professional with a large stage, good technology, skilled fellow musicians and a very warm reception from the audience and other musicians. On August 5, I gave my solo concert with my own compositions for Contrabass flute, bass flute and electronics, as well as an arrangement of a traditional chorale from Gammelsvenskby. This performance was in a smaller venue and had a slightly more informal nature, which invited spontaneous conversation and feedback afterwards. I heard many inspiring concerts and connected with colleagues from different parts of the world with common interests (USA, France, Switzerland, India, UK), which will probably lead to more international engagements. Very spontaneous, I was asked to participate as a soloist at the French composer Sophie Dufeutrelle's workshop/concert in "sound painting", something that inspired us for future collaborations. It's nice to meet around a common denominator and exciting to hear so many ways of playing the flute, one of the world's oldest instruments. It becomes a reference of what is done and how my way of playing places itself in an international context. I note that the way I use new techniques and sounds in a melodic, rhythmic and tonal context stands out and attracts attention. I was very inspired by several concerts and meetings, e.g. Robert Dick, Deepak Ram, Matthias Ziegler and Sophie Dufeutrelle. The connections I made at the festival have already led to seminars in Gothenburg during autumn 2023: Robert Dick (legendary contemporary flutist) and Chris Abell (wooden flutes inventor) and a deepened contact with Sophie Dufeutrelle who is working on an article about the the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. Furthermore, I am invited to perform at the Low Flutes festival in Washington DC and will make 4 performances in April 2024. A future collaboration with bansuri flutist (North Indian bamboo flute) Deepak Ram and electronica artist Robert Rabinowitz is also planned for 2024.

  • Nordic jazz explores Sami joik - Closing concert, Östersund Organ Festival.
  • 2023
  • In: Stora kyrkan, Östersund. November 12, 2023.
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The Östersund Organ Festival is an annual event and for 2023 the theme was music from the Scandinavian indigenous people, Sami. Hagberg was commissioned to form a group which presented an exploration of the Sami Jojk with the starting point in Nordic improvised music. Frode Fjellheim - Keyboard, Composer, Vocals. Anders Hagberg – Alto-, Bass and Concert Flutes, Soprano Saxophone, Composer. Snorre Bjerck – Percussion, Voice. The purpose of the project was to explore jojk in new ways, where traditional melodies and new compositions based on Sami music were instrumented and arranged for the unique instrumentation of the group. From November 9th to 12th an artistic development took part with rehearsals and discussions, from which the repertoire and arrangements were created. An important consideration was the large acoustics of the Church (Stora kyrkan). The repertoire had its starting point in some of Fjelheim's church music inspired by jojk from the albums “Aejlies gaaltije” and “Solkvad” and Hagberg's interpretations of jojk after the Northern Sami artist Inga Jusso from the albums “Earthsongs” and “Stories of Now” and “North”. A musical kinship was immediately felt between the musicians, and the preparatory work as well as the concert was very fruitful and organic. The visual and acoustic settings in the church contributed to the profound expression of the performance. The music was recorded and might result in a new album and future collaboration between the three artists.

  • 2023
  • In: Premiere The Trees: Stenungsund. June 16, 2023. Premiere The Glade: Gothenburg December 1, 2023. City of Stenungsund, Atalante, Swedish Arts Council.
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Commissioned Musical suites to the Dance performances “Träden” (The Trees) and “Gläntan” (The Glade) which are part of Embla Dance and Theatre project “Green Movement Lab”. “Green Movement Lab” and these performances are funded by Kulturrådet (Swedish Arts Council). In addition, Embla Dance and Theatre is supported by Göteborgs kommun (City of Gothenburg) and Region Västra Götaland. Green Movement Lab works with the climate crisis from a relational perspective, a more equal relationship between humans and nature. In the project, we want to approach the possibility of a bodily and sensory approach to nature, take the perspective of the trees and protect our coexistence. The musical compositions are created from acoustic instruments, samplings and electronics which has been processed and arranged in software programs Logic and Ableton. Similar sounds were used to both performances, however with different approach. “Träden” (The Trees) is performed outdoors with dancers, musicians, and recorded sounds. These sounds were used as a foundation to live played woodwinds and percussion. The performance wants to show a possible way to create a real difference, through an increased connection to the trees and nature. Climate research points out a stronger connection to nature as something that can slow down the prevailing negative development. “Gläntan”(The Glade) which premiered at Atalante Theatre, invites to an immersive audio-visual experience, sensual, and poetic space where the dancers and the audience are surrounded by video, sound, and dance. Through a concentrated section of nature, the performance provides a heightened artistic experience of trees and, at the same time, focuses on the coexistence between humans and nature. The performance takes its starting point in Anna Wennerbeck´s three-year research project around trees, choreography and climate issues seen from a relational perspective, a more equal relationship between humans and nature. The text is based on highly current tree research through a collaboration with researchers in central France.

  • MA : Album by Anders Hagberg
  • 2022
  • In: Prophone Records/Naxos. May 25, 2022..
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • All the music on this album was recorded in different rooms with different acoustic conditions, using an improvisation-based approach that left much or all to the impulses of the place and moment. Half of the pieces on the album consist of solos for flutes of different sizes, with minimal accompaniment. The others were played in duo with double bassist Johannes Lundberg and were recorded in two rooms with big, warm acoustics: the main exhibition hall at the Nordic Watercolor Museum and Ohlin Hall at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. It all begins in the room. I am in the room. I play, and I listen to the sound of my instrument and the silence that follows: the silence that is a precondition for the music and will form an integral part of the whole. There is a Japanese concept, ma, that is central to Japanese art, architecture, and music. It captures the charged quality of this silence: “an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled.” How does one become aware of the ma in the music—the possibilities of the room, the silence? I think it is a matter of being present in the musical moment, embracing the “now” of the situation. For me, daily practice is one way to establish this contact between creativity, intention, body, instrument, and room. When I am with my instrument in the music, my mind gravitates to the now. Practice itself becomes the path to presence. In seeking to increase my attention and presence, I have also been inspired by Suizen, or “blowing Zen,” a form of meditation on sound and silence. The notes and the silent spaces between them produce effects in my inner room: associations, memories, references, thoughts, feelings. When I play, the music resounds in the outer room; it is perceived by listeners and penetrates their inner rooms, where it may arouse associations, memories, references, thoughts, feelings. My inner room stands in dialog with the outer room, and from thence the listener’s inner room. The music becomes a medium that communicates between them: a room of its own. Anders Hagberg, March 2022

    • National Flute Convention 2021 (US). I was honored to be included as a soloist already for the 2020 Convention which was supposed to take place in Dallas (Texas/US). Due to the Corona Pandemic, it was postponed to 2021 and eventually became an online event in August 2021. As an artist I was supposed to prerecord performances which would be sent during the convention on the Whova Platform. I was part of two concerts, Electric Low Flutes and Sunday Gala Concert. For the first one I used an edited version of a streamed concert from Haga Church in Gothenburg (2021) with the music from the album TRUST. I was mainly playing Bass- and Contrabass flutes with electronics together with a bass player and two dancers in a site-specific performance. For the Gala Concert, I wanted to compose new music and at the time for the recording I was working a lot with exploring percussive extended techniques on the Contrabass Flute. Extended techniques on the flute are an integrated part in contemporary music, however not so common in a rhythmic and melodic context based in Jazz. Having that in mind, I explored how I could work with a couple of groove-based patterns in specific tonalities for the contrabass flute. The suite is entitled Wanderlust due to the fact of unwanted isolation and that we were supposed to meet in person. The first part, Travelling reflects the forward motion of walking or travelling by train where I found some rarely used fingerings to create clear and sonorous percussive sounds. The second part, called At Ease is composed as a contrast to the other two, reflecting the arrival to a destination and the feeling of rest. It is based on the use of voice and low flute pitches in a repeated harmonic cycle. Finally, the third part Restless reflects the feeling of wanting to go on the road again. Musically, it explores harmonic overtones from a low C# pedal point including vocal effects and eventually evolves into a polyrhythmic 6/4 groove. The suite will be included in an upcoming album during spring 2022.

  • Inner and Outer Spaces – an awareness to achieve flow?
  • 2019
  • In: Hands on Research Conference Departamento de Comunicação e Arte | Universidade de Aveiro Aveiro, Portugal.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ABSTRACT The purpose of the project is to explore how a musician can develop awareness of an inner space of sound and mind and how it affects the music. The music itself creates a tonal spatiality which is sounding in the outer space of the hall and continues to live in the acoustics of the room. *How is a wind players sound affected by an increased awareness of the body´s resonance? *How is the musical expression influenced by the musician´s ability to be in a presence of mind? *Does modality mean something to reinforce musical presence and musical spatiality? With improvisation as the musical approach, methods used to investigate these questions have been following two main tracks; *Meditation on sound and silence inspired by exercises in Suizen (Blowing Zen) developed by Buddhist monks in Japan. *Modality. The tonal limitations have consisted of a selection of modes from Western, Arabic and Indian music. The method has consisted of a number of laboratory experiments with improvisation implemented during rehearsals, concerts, recordings and teaching. In this work I argue that with an increased awareness of the body as an inner space of resonance, the wind player gets a better sound and clearer projection into the room. Furthermore, with a mindful presence, the musician appears to connect with a quality that makes the musical result more expressive. Finally, the use of tonal limitations with an approach of embracing the mode, reinforces the presence of mind and listening qualities of the musician and thus also the sounding music. There are a number of artistic and pedagogical implications to gain from this: The combination of conscious breathing and improvisation reinforces a sense of calmness and concentration in which both the heart and the brain are positively affected. This conclusion is supported by recent medical research. Thus; an effortless approach in mind and body makes the practice itself pleasant! Improvisation practice with modal limitations is simultaneously training creativity, skills and theory. This paper suggests that the use of the above-mentioned tools increases the likelihood for a musician to play in a state of flow.

  • Winds and Tonal Worlds – a reflective performance on sound and modality
  • 2019
  • In: Hands on Research Conference Departamento de Comunicação e Arte | Universidade de Aveiro Aveiro, Portugal.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ABSTRACT When I try to answer questions from students how I still find motivation to practice, I´ve come to realize that the real reason for practicing is not that I want to improve my skills, but rather because I feel so good doing it! As a wind player I need to have a free breathing to get a full sound and while improvising I am focused on the music being played, something outside my ego. Breathing and mantra; two things associated with meditation. In this performance I will play solo on bass flutes and soprano saxophone as well as present my research on inner spaces and improvisation. Medical research shows that a calm and deep breathing positively affects our body and mind. Neurological studies on music in the brain shows that musical improvisation activates many parts of the brain, especially those associated with flow. This is also confirmed by my own practice as a pedagogue and artist. Thus, it seems like the combination of conscious breathing and improvisation can make the playing more qualitative, concentrated and pleasant. With an awareness of an inner space of sound and mind, the artist, instrument, room and listener vibrate together. I suggest that with an effortless and creative approach to playing, the simplest or most challenging exercise can be a time of qualitative attentiveness and a way to increase the full potential of the artist. I also suggest a method to modal studies with inspiration from Indian and Arabic classical music implemented in a Western context where the embracing of the modal characteristics is essential. This knowledge can be implemented in both artistic practice and in teaching situations on all levels and introduces a new approach to scale studies in Western music. Other innovative contributions are the use modal structures from different traditions and extended techniques in an improvised and melodic context.

  • 2018
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2013
  • In: Bangalore, India. Shristhi School.
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Anders Hagberg – flutes, soprano saxophone, composer Ahmad al Khatib – oud, composer The purpose of the project has been to develop and to create a more profound understanding of the music from our two cultures and to integrate these experiences in improvisation and composition. Based on modal improvisation, we have examined the similarities and differences between the Arabic Maqam system and modality in jazz, particularly in Nordic improvised music. We have explored the interfaces between our musical expressions and have created music that has its starting point in our traditions, reaching towards a new synthesis. The importance of sound (timbre) and silence as carriers of expression and narrative is a central part of our work. Our ambition has been to develop new music; A Melodic Melange of Nordic improvised music and Arabic maqam music.
