On Form, Place, and Space in Folke Dahlberg’s Landscape Writings (Att berätta landskap. Om form, plats och rum i Folke Dahlbergs landskapsböcker) This article deals with four prose works by Folke Dahlberg (1912–1966)—Vättern (1949), Tiveden (1952), Göta kanal (1954), Leva vid Vättern (1958)—focusing the relationship between landscape and literature. Generically difficult to pinpoint, these works transgress literary boundaries by incorporating an array of literary discourses. The question of literary form becomes central and is discussed from a narratological point of view, leading to an assessment of the predominantly intertextual narrative. Furthermore, landscape is tied to the concept of regionalism, epitomizing its basic characteristics. Dahlberg re-presents the stories carried by the landscape, whereby he treats it as a “storied matter” in an ecocritical sense. To further the understanding of landscape, the analysis seeks support also from cultural geography and phenomenology. From the latter point of view landscape comes forth as a bodily experience. Since Dahlberg inserts maps in his discourse, this calls for an investigation of how cartography and topography intersect in his writings.

    • Mats Jansson, Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion, University of GothenburgThe Black Rainbow: The Voice of Melancholy in the Writings of Folke Dahlberg (Den svarta regnbågen. Melankolins röst hos Folke Dahlberg)In this article I focus on melancholy as a particular feeling or sensory mood as it appears in the writings of Folke Dahlberg (1912–1966). The article takes its cue from Dahlberg’s statementthat a certain “tender sadness” runs through his entire oeuvre. The purpose of the article is to concretize and lay bare the shifting appearances and nuances of this mood in Dahlberg’s writing. This is done by tracking melancholy as a particular literary dialect or voice expressed through diction, vocabulary, figurative language, states of feeling within a certain semantic and emotional register. The article addresses questions of how the voice of melancholy is expressed and what its recurring features are, and it considers ways in which it can be overcome or dealt with. Sublimation proves to be a psychological strategy at work. Melancholy is preserved and nursed though writing; it generates or feeds creativity. Solitude, gloom, silence, indifference, and despondency are shown to be terms that constitute the semantic register of Dahlberg’s melancholy. Furthermore, Dahlberg refers to the concept of spleen which relates him to a Symbolist aesthetics, where he is accompanied by Gunnar Ekelöf and Vilhelm Ekelund, two other poets within the tradition of melancholia. However, Dahlberg also gives expression to a particular melancholy related to man’s aging, the human body and the loss of bodily and sensory faculties. This physiologically motivated melancholy rests on the notion of man as a timebound and finite creature. In contrast to Pär Lagerkvist’s religious and transcendent serenity, which Dahlberg refers to, his own bodily conditioned melancholy could be termed immanent.

    • 1. Filter-feeding zooplankton in lakes feed on a mixture of phytoplankton, bacteria, and terrestrial particles and the proportions and nutritional value of these components can be highly variable. However, the extent to which food quality interacts with food quantity in affecting overall zooplankton performance is not yet fully resolved.2. Here we performed laboratory feeding experiments to test how the performance of the unselective filter feeder Daphnia galeata was affected if various quantities of high-quality food (the phytoplankton Rhodomonas) were diluted with low-quality food such as heterotrophic bacteria (Pseudomonas) or terrestrial detritus particles (t-POM) from the riparian zone of a boreal forest stream. We hypothesised: that increased proportions of bacteria and t-POM in the diet will lead to decreased survival, somatic growth; and reproduction of Daphnia despite the presence of phytoplankton; that these effects are more pronounced for t-POM than for heterotrophic bacteria; and that this response is stronger when phytoplankton availability is low.3. Increasing the concentrations of Pseudomonas affected Daphnia survival, growth, and reproduction negatively when Rhodomonas was available at intermediate (0.37 mgC/L) and high (0.55 mgC/L) quantities. When Rhodomonas quantity was low (0.22 mgC/L), the addition of Pseudomonas generally resulted in better Daphnia performance except at very high concentrations of the bacterium relative to Rhodomonas. In contrast, the addition of t-POM was detrimental for overall Daphnia performance at all Rhodomonas concentrations.4. Daphnia performance was best described by a model including the interaction between food quality and quantity, with stronger negative effects on Daphnia when high-quality food was supplemented with t-POM than with Pseudomonas.5. The results indicate that the ability of zooplankton to use low-quality food is affected by the concurrent availability of high-quality food. Furthermore, food sources that can be used but do not fulfil dietary requirements of grazers (e.g. bacteria), may still provide nutritional benefits as long as other complementary food components are available in sufficient quantities to compensate for biochemical deficiencies
