  • Önskat eller oönskat? Trädgårdens växter mellan natur och kultur
  • 2016

    • In the home garden, people inevitably interact with a multitude of non-human actors, including plants. Home gardeners get involved with, and affect, the growth, life and death of other individuals through activities such as weeding and pruning. In this article, the authors discuss people’’s everyday interactions with ‘‘nature’’ in their own gardens, with a specific focus on plants. Despite their rootedness, plants do move and are moved between different places in the garden, and from one garden to another. Some plants are particularly cherished and receive special attention and care, for example those carrying a specific history, i.e. from grandma’’s garden. While heritage plants and many other, are often deliberately moved in by the gardener, plants also have spreading seeds, winding roots and rhizomes, making it possible for species to move by themselves, within and between gardens. The same plant can in one situation behighly desired, while in other situations despised as a fierce intruder that need to be controlled, and some gardeners describe their fight against specific weeds in terms of war.The article is based on a transdisciplinary research project, examining the interactions between people, plants and other actors in contemporary home gardens in Sweden. With ethnographic methods and using cultural analysis as a lens, the authors discuss the complex and fluid microcosm of the home garden, where changes connected to annual and day and night cycles, as well as life cycles of individuals constantly get intermingled with decisions and ac- tions of human and non-human actors.

  • Är det modernare idag än igår? Om åldern på lantbrukets byggnader.
  • 2008
  • In: Rig - Kulturhistorisk tidskrift. - 0035-5267. ; :3, s. 139-147
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Is it more modern today than yesterday? Buildings and Modernisation of the Swedish Countryside. By using information from the two bookseries Svenska gods och gårdar and Sveriges bebyggelse, together with the database (LiM) from the National Heritage Board it has been possible to reconstruct how old farmbarns were in Sweden at three historical points during the 20th century. The first point in time is just before the second world war representing the end of the era of traditional farming, the second point occurs in the mid 50th when the modernizing was going on, and the last point is around 1990, representing our time today, the most modern time of all, as we might think. The starting point is the database of information about farm buildings in 20 parishes all over Sweden around 1990. The same information has been collected from the bookseries. I have registrated the year of construction. The main question has been if it is possible to see when the total mass of this building was most modern in average. The result is that just before the second world war, the average age of a barn was about 37 years. The resently build barns, up to 10 years old, was 14 % and the oldest ones, over 90 years, was 7 %. In 1955 the average age of barns had increased to 46 years, the resent buildings were reduced to 8 % and the old ones had increased to 10%. Around 1990 the average age of barns was 74 years, the resent buildings were down to 1 % and the 90 years old buildings had increased to 31%. On the one hand, we have today a more modern farming situation than ever before but, on the other hand, we also have more old redundant buildings than ever. In that respect you might say that we are living in a more ancient environment than ever.
