  • En avbildningsrevolution? : Fotokonstens etablering i en norrländsk småstad omkring 1800-talets mitt
  • 2021
  • In: RIG. - Stockholm : Kungliga Gustav Adolfs Akademien. - 0035-5267 .- 2002-3863. ; 104:3, s. 129-157
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Heritage tourism before the age of mass tourism – visitors to Swedish Royal Palaces c. 1750-1870The early 19th century saw an increasing number of visitors to the royal palaces of Sweden. Much like the situation in Great Britain or the German states, people from the lower middle strata of society and upwards went on short weekend holidays to enjoy the countryside and each other’s company – and to visit a royal palace. The aim of the visits seems to have been to experience history and to some degree art. The royal connection of the palaces seems to have been secondary though, although the court and monarchy tried to inscribe themselves as part of the historical heritage as a way of using the interest in the palaces to their favor. The court met the public interest by opening up the palaces to what seems like a higher degree than earlier, and by having guidebooks that describes the palaces and their surroundings written and sold on site. To make the visits possible an infrastructure of for example inns were visitors could eat and lodge, and palace custodians that could show visitors around in the palaces was established, some on the initiative of the court, some of private origin. Around 1820 steam boat lines started their traffic in the area around Stockholm, and after a few years most of the royal palaces were connected to the capital on a regular basis. This did of course make palace visits even cheaper and obtainable even for the lower classes. This early form of tourism, short recreational travel to what can be called heritage sites, forms a background and gives the preconditions to the late 19th century tourism to dramatic mountain- and coastal areas. The goal in both cases were, in some ways, to get to know the nation – either its history or its geography.

  • Ideologisering, manifestering och gemenskapande : kulturarvsproduktion som process i lokala industrisamhällen under omvandling
  • 2019
  • In: RIG. - Uppsala : Kungl. Gustav Adolfs Akademien för svensk folkkultur. - 0035-5267 .- 2002-3863. ; 102:2, s. 65-86
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Ideologization, manifestation and community making - Processes of heritage production in two local communities in transitionAs the local industry has taken on an increasingly marginalized role in post-industrial small towns, like Surahammar and Timrå, in Central and Northern Sweden, an industrial past has emerged as the more valuable politically, economically but also socio-culturally, to nurture, preserve and identify with in these local industrial communities that undergo transition. This article aims to analyze local heritage production as a use and representation of history. Empirically resting on data collection and analysis of primary and secondary sources, comprising interviews, observations, archives and contextual literature, the article argues that local post-industrial heritage production may involve continuation as well as alterations of processes started in the past industrial society. Also, it comprises local adaptation as well as adjustments on heritage discourses. In conclusion, despite of local differences similarities may, as shown in Surahammar and Timrå, indeed occur in both design and content. This involves a pre-dominance of “non-professional” producers and including and excluding representations of places and people. Furthermore, local heritage provide combined political, economic and socio-cultural arenas of different ideologies as well as sites for creation of shared values and evoking emotions of belonging in diversified communities. In Surahammar and Timrå this has been done recurrently with the use of effective homogenization strategies within the field of heritage, i.e. by emphasizing sufficiently remote pasts to induce temporary but nevertheless efficient “classless and rootless” unity in pride of local place and values.

  • Länsstyrelsen och o-djuret : Lek som strategi ifridlysningen av Storsjöodjuret 1985–2005
  • 2022
  • In: RIG. - 0035-5267 .- 2002-3863. ; :4, s. 210-225
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In 1985 the County Administrative Boardof Jämtland initiated a process to protect Storsjöodjuret (the Great Lake Monster). Asother famous cryptids, the Monster has become a valuable resource in the process of cultural heritage, marketing and tourism. We apply Bateson’s theories of play (1972) and Goffman’s concept of frame (1974) to show how play offers a metacommunicative strategy to circumvent expressions of disbelief in a locally important folkloristic phenomenon. We ask what reactions the board’s invitation to play are met with, and how the case’szoological, cultural and juridical frames are negotiated. The process is analysed with respect to the different actors’ relation to genres and keys. The playful process in 1985 is contrasted by the judicial intervention in 2002 by the parliamentary ombudsman by whom humour and play are not deemed acceptable communicative strategies. We understand this in terms of closeness, and find that closeness to Storsjöodjuret is a direct factor both to the complexity of suitable communicative strategy, as well as to the creation of the protective decision made as such.

  • Review (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Writing personal songbooks was something that occupied many young men and women during the long 19th century. After a day´s work or in a long pause, an owner of a note book could sit and write songtexts, copying them from prints or from other personal songbooks. The article highlights the importance of the wrting activity for these potential singers. It tries to answer two related questions: What did writing songtexts mean to the singers? And what impact hade the writing acititivies on the singers´relations to the song?First of all, by writing a songtext, the writer appropiated the song. He or she made it to a personal belonging, at least something that could be under his or her control, although the text was similar to the one in the model.Secondly, writing songtexts resulted in a better ability to remember songs. While writing the texts, the owner of a personal song book gradually trained his or her capacity to learn songs by heart. The third implication points to a closer familarity with songtexts, which was an important insight for the writers as well as the singers. As many popular songs are built upon formulas, the writers bit by bit learned common text patterns and then bedame able so sing more freely.
