  • Julfirandets ideologi och genus i svensk bildkonst från sekelskiftet 1900. Elsa Beskow, Carl Larsson och Jenny Nyström : [On gender and the ideology of the celebration of Christmas in Swedish art at the turn of the century 1900. Elsa Beskow, Carl Larsson and Jenny Nyström]

    • Contemporary art is not depicting the Christmas celebration in the same way as during the turn of the century 1900. In Sweden artists like Elsa Beskow, Carl Larsson and Jenny Nyström made Christmas illustrations that also became part of the celebration itself, through then new media, such as Christmas cards and illustrated magazines. It was a modern, urban, middle-class audience that consumed the images, but the motifs were looking back to a rural past. Christmas turned both patriarchal in connection to the family father with Christmas presents, foods and material richness. It also turned nationalistic when a Swedish version of the Santa Claus was invented from the traditional "tomte" (gnome) who originally was guarding and working at the farms. Especially in the work of Nyström the images of Christmas celebrations were both connected to a presumed historical past as well as a modern future. References to a pagan past, present Christianity and modern lifestyles collaborated in making a typical Swedish Christmas. Even more interesting, these century-old images are still part of Swedish Christmas celebrations. In a time when family constellations are changing and Sweden is turning more multicultural, we hold on to a traditional ideal of how to make a perfect family Christmas. There is a timeless quality in Christmas celebrations and a sense of a global community when we imagine that everybody else in the nation or globally are doing the exact same thing as we do right now. There are few things experienced more normal and working normative than families and home life.

    • In Skånska årsfester in 1973, I described a few Christmas pranks from the Scanian Recording Collections. The best covered research, "go Christmas ghost" remained untreated. The custom was known since at least the mid-18th century and appeared in most of Scania and a few parishes in Blekinge until the 1930s. Young people made themselves unrecognizable by girls being dressed in outmoded male clothing and boys in women's clothing. Faces were sooted and stained. So dressed "ghosts" went around the villages in small groups. Making themselves as old and ugly as possible were the main things. The Christmas ghosts knocked at the door shouting "Merry Christmas" in chorus. Some made music, others danced or acted in other ways. Food and liquors were offered so they wouldn't drive out Christmas. Only those homes were visited, where they were sure to be received and invited. The visits continued over Christmas, and sometimes even to Lent.

  • Vägra döda, vägra värnplikt! : En studie av värnpliktsvägrarfrågan i kultur- och samhällsdebatten och inom fredsrörelsen i Sverige ca 1965-91
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: RIG Kulturhistorisk Tidskrift. - 0035-5267. ; :2, s. 84-103

    • The use of Woad in Sweden During the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century – An Overwiew of the Written Historic Sources The dye indigotin, derived from woad, Isatis tinctoria, has in Europe historically been used for the blue coloration of textiles and as a blue organic pigment in paintings. In Sweden indigotin has been found in medieval tapestries as well as in art and folk art from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Woad was traditionally provided the blue color for the Swedish flag and the Swedish military Caroleans uniforms. Indigotin from woad can therefore be expected to be found in other historic objects and artifacts from Sweden. International literature mainly describes the history of woad from a central European perspective and the Nordic countries are often left aside. Therefore, the purpose of this source overview is to briefly define the Swedish historic texts that describe the use of woad during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The texts from this period has a mercantile perspective, socio-economic inventories and administrative provisions aimed to creating national self-sufficiency of domestic natural resources. The texts during this period can also be various manuals with cultivation advice, as well as handbooks with recipes for paint manufacturing or textile dyeing at home. The overview provides a basis of knowledge and can be used as a help to formulate new research questions in technical art history about woad dye and pigment, their meaning and their use.
