  • Effects of deposition temperature on the mechanical and structural properties of amorphous Al-Si-O thin films prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 787
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aluminosilicate (Al–Si–O) thin films containing up to 31 at.% Al and 23 at.% Si were prepared by reactive RF magnetron co-sputtering. Mechanical and structural properties were measured by indentation and specular reflectance infrared spectroscopy at varying Si sputtering target power and substrate temperature in the range 100 to 500 °C. It was found that an increased substrate temperature and Al/Si ratio give denser structure and consequently higher hardness (7.4 to 9.5 GPa) and higher reduced elastic modulus (85 to 93 GPa) while at the same time lower crack resistance (2.6 to 0.9 N). The intensity of the infrared Si-O-Si/Al asymmetric stretching vibrations shows a linear dependence with respect to Al concentration. The Al–O–Al vibrational band (at 1050 cm−1) shifts towards higher wavenumbers with increasing Al concentration which indicates a decrease of the bond length, evidencing denser structure and higher residual stress, which is supported by the increased hardness. The same Al–O–Al vibrational band (at 1050 cm−1) shifts towards lower wavenumber with increasing substrate temperature indicating an increase in the average coordination number of Al.

  • Nanocrystallinity in RuO2 coatings-Influence of precursor and preparation temperature
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 518:14, s. 3615-3618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of precursor and calcination temperature on the nano morphology of ruthenium dioxide on titanium, prepared from thermal decomposition of aqueous salt solutions were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction, gas porosimetry and cyclic voltammetry showed that lower calcination temperature yielded smaller crystallites. The crystallites were between 6 and 22 nm in diameter. When using ruthenium nitrosyl nitrate the firing temperature had a large impact on the grain size, but for chloride there was only a minor effect in the temperature range 350-550 degrees C.

  • Simultaneous chemical vapor deposition and thermal strengthening of glass
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 669:1, s. 487-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the current paper we present a concept combining metal organic chemical vapor deposition with thermal strengthening process of flat glass. As the flat glass is heated to be thermally strengthened, which takes up to 20 minutes, there is an opportunity for performing a surface modification. We describe the application of transparent and amorphous Al2O3 thin films during the thermal strengthening process. Al2O3 was chosen due to the following desirable properties: increased surface mechanical properties and increased chemical durability, the latter has not been investigated in the current paper. The residual surface compressive stresses after performed strengthening of the coated glasses were quantified to be in the range of 80–110 MPa. The Al2O3 content in the surface was measured using the Surface Ablation Cell employed with Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and found to be at least doubled at the surface and having an increased Al2O3 content at least 0.5 μm underneath the glass surface. During the surface reaction, sodium is migrating to the surface giving a hazy salt layer on the glass which can easily be washed off with water. The applied coatings are transparent and provide increased surface hardness and crack resistance at low indentation loads. At higher indentation loads the interaction volume is larger and displays the same effect on the surface mechanical properties as for thermally strengthened glass. The contact angle with water compared to annealed float glass is significantly increased from 5° to 45° due to the different surface chemistry and surface topography.

  • Surface roughness of oxidised copper films studied by atomic force microscopy and spectroscopic light scattering
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 325:1-2, s. 92-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interface roughness of Cu2O films produced by thermal oxidation of Cu was studied by spectroscopic elastic light scattering and atomic force microscopy. No correlation could be found between the roughness of the two interfaces, although the amplitude and the length scale of the roughness changed in the same way with film thickness for both interfaces. Both interfaces were found to have a fractal dimension of two. A first order perturbation theory was used to analyse the light scattering data; theory and experiment are in good agreement within the limits of the theory.

  • High stability titanium nitride based solar control films
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 214:2, s. 213-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Triple-layer structures of TiO2TiN/TiO2 and quadruple layer structures of TiO2Al/TiN/TiO2 have been sputtered on glass substrates at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 300°C. The reflectance and transmittance were measured in the visible and the near-IR wavelength regions. The thin layer of aluminium, in the quadruple layer, oxidizes and forms a dense diffusion barrier. The multilayers exhibit improved optical selectivity which also improves with substrate temperature up to 300°C.

  • Bonding of vegetable oils to mercapto silane treated metal surfaces : Surface engineering on the nano scale
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 515:2, s. 838-841
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the bonding of thin vegetable oil films on mercapto silane treated aluminium surfaces has been studied. The silane molecules are attached to the surface by metal-oxygen-silicon bonds. The coupling between the unsaturated bonds of the vegetable oil and the thiol functionalised surface was obtained through a photoinduced thiol-ene reaction. The surfaces were characterised by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Vegetable oil contains both saturated and unsaturated carbon chains. For the reactions investigated in this study it is the unsaturated carbon chains that can react by a thiol-ene reaction and the results indicate that it is possible to attach a vegetable oil to a metal surface pre-treated with a thiol functionalised silane.

  • Elastic Light Scattering and Electrochemical Durability of Electrochromic Tungsten-oxide-based Films
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 288:1-2, s. 330-333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrochromic W-oxide-based films were produced by reactive d.c. magnetron sputtering. Fluorination and substrate bias were used to modify the film properties. Spectral measurements of the total and diffuse light scattering showed that the diffuse component remained at much less than 1% in the visible, irrespective of electrochemical degradation, which is low enough for smart windows applications.
