  • Rutile TiO 2 thin films grown by reactive high power impulse magnetron sputtering
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 545, s. 445-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin TiO 2 films were grown on Si(001) substrates by reactive dc magnetron sputtering (dcMS) and high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) at temperatures ranging from 300 to 700 C.Optical and structural properties of films were compared both before and after post-annealing using scanning electron microscopy, low angle X-ray reflection (XRR), grazing inc idence X-ray diffractometry and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Both dcMS- and HiPIMS-grown films reveal polycrystalline rutile TiO 2 , even prior to post-annealing.The HiPIMS-grown films exhibit significantly larger grains compared to that of dcMC-grown films, approaching 100% of the film thickness for films grown at 700 C.In addition, the XRR surface roughness of HiPIMS-grown films was significantly lower than that of dcMS-grown films over the whole temperature range 300-700 C.Dispersion curves could only be obtained for the HiPIMS-grown films, which were shown to have a refractive index in the range of 2.7-2.85 at 500 nm.The results show that thin, rutile TiO 2 films, with high refractive index, can be obtained by HiPIMS at relatively low growth temperatures, without post-annealing.Furthermore, these films are smoother and show better optical characteristics than their dcMS-grown counterparts.© 2013 Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.

  • On the complex refractive index of polymer:fullerene photovoltaic blends
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 571:P3, s. 371-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a detailed investigation of the refractive index of polymer:fullerene blends for photovoltaic applications. The donor polymers poly[2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-alt-5,5-(4,7-di-2-thienyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (APFO3), poly[2,3-bis-(3-octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline-5,8-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl] (TQ1), and poly[2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-alt-5,5-(5,10-di-2-thienyl-2,3,7,8-tetraphenyl-pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline)] (APFO-Green9) were blended with either [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). We measured variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry for three systems, namely APFO3:PCBM, TQ1:PC71BM and APFO-Green9:PC71BM, as a function of composition and analyze the data employing a number of models. We found that Bruggeman effective medium approximations (EMA) are not precise for the description of the optical properties of these blends. This is due to a number of reasons. First, we find that there are energy shifts associated to changes in conjugation length that cannot be accounted for using EMA. Second, blending results in a strong reduction of anisotropy. Finally, our data suggest that there is some degree of vertical segregation between components. Therefore, our results support the idea that the optical properties of polymer:fullerene mixtures should be treated as alloys rather than non-interacting blends.

  • The effect of carbon content on the microstructure of hydrogen-free physical vapour deposited titanium carbide films
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - P.O. Box 211, Amsterdam, 1000 AE, Netherlands : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 518:1, s. 71-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Titanium carbide (TiC) coatings for tribological applications were deposited on high speed steel. Several coatings with different titanium to carbon ratio were deposited by means of physical vapour deposition in which titanium was evaporated and carbon was sputtered. The coatings were characterised using analytical electron microscopy. It was observed that the change in titanium to carbon ratio significantly changed the microstructure of the coatings. The low carbon containing coatings consisted of columnar grains exhibiting a preferred crystallographic orientation whereas the coating with highest carbon content consisted of randomly ordered TiC grains in an amorphous carbon matrix. Energy filtered transmission electron microscopy revealed a change in Ti/C ratio as the distance from the substrate increased. The titanium to carbon ratio was observed to increase with distance from the substrate until a stable level was reached. This is due to a variation in the titanium evaporation during the early stages of film growth. This change of the titanium to carbon ratio affected the columnar growth in the initial stage of coating growth for the coatings with low carbon content. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Improvements of fill factor in solar cells based on blends of polyfluorene copolymers as electron donors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 515:5, s. 3126-3131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photovoltaic characteristics of solar cells based on alternating polyfluorene copolymers, poly(2,7-(9,9-dioctyl-fluorene)-alt-5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)) (APFO-3), and poly(2,7-(9,9-didodecyl-fluorene)-alt-5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadiazole)) (APFO-4), blended with an electron acceptor fullerene molecule [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), have been investigated and compared. The two copolymers have the same aromatic backbone structure but differ by the length of their alkyl side chain. The overall photovoltaic performance of the solar cells is comparable irrespective of the copolymer used in the active layer. However, the fill factor (FF) values of the devices are strongly affected by the copolymer type. Higher FF values were realized in solar cells with APFO-4 (with longer alkyl side chain)/PCBM bulk heterojunction active layer. On the other hand, devices with blends of APFO-3/APFO-4/PCBM were found to render fill factor values that are intermediate between the values obtained in solar cells with APFO-3/PCBM and APFO-4/PCBM active film. Upon using APFO-3/APFO-4 blends as electron donors, the cell efficiency can be enhanced by about 16% as compared to cells with either APFO-3 or APFO-4. The transport of holes in each polymer obeys the model of hopping transport in disordered media. However, the degree of energetic barrier against hopping was found to be larger in APFO-3. The tuning of the photovoltaic parameters will be discussed based on studies of hole transport in the pure polymer films, and morphology of blend layers. The effect of bipolar transport in PCBM will also be discussed.

  • Self-organized nanostructuring in Zr0.69Al0.31N thin films studied by atom probe tomography
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 615, s. 233-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have applied atom probe tomography (APT) to analyze self-organizing structures of wear-resistant Zr0.69Al0.31N thin films grown by magnetron sputtering. Transmission electron microscopy shows that these films grow as a three-dimensional nanocomposite, consisting of interleaved lamellae in a labyrinthine structure, with an in-plane size scale of ~ 5 nm. The structure was recovered in the Al APT signal, while the Zr and N data lacked structural information. The onset of the self-organized labyrinthine growth was observed to occur by surface nucleation, 5–8 nm above the MgO substrate, due to increasing Zr–Al compositional fluctuations during elemental segregation. At a final stage, the labyrinthine growth mode was observed to be interrupted by the formation of larger ZrN grains.

  • Spinodal decomposition of Ti0.33Al0.67N thin films studied by atom probe tomography
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 520:13, s. 4362-4368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Details of the phase decomposition in NaCl-structure Ti0.33Al0.67N thin films deposited by cathodic arc evaporation are studied by atom probe tomography. We demonstrate that as-deposited films are in the earliest stage of decomposition for which electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction indicate a single-phase solid solution. Annealing at 900 degrees C further activates spinodal decomposition of the films, although pockets of unde-composed material remain after 2 h. N preferentially segregates to the AlN and TiN domains, causing the TiAlN matrix to be understoichiometric, by the energetics of N vacancies in TiAlN. The corresponding modulation in stoichiometry implies a Kirkendall effect, caused by different Al and Ti diffusivities.

  • Nanocrystallinity in RuO2 coatings-Influence of precursor and preparation temperature
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 518:14, s. 3615-3618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of precursor and calcination temperature on the nano morphology of ruthenium dioxide on titanium, prepared from thermal decomposition of aqueous salt solutions were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction, gas porosimetry and cyclic voltammetry showed that lower calcination temperature yielded smaller crystallites. The crystallites were between 6 and 22 nm in diameter. When using ruthenium nitrosyl nitrate the firing temperature had a large impact on the grain size, but for chloride there was only a minor effect in the temperature range 350-550 degrees C.

  • Growth and thermal stability of Sc-doped BaZrO 3 thin films deposited on single crystal substrates
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin films of BaZr1-xScxO3-x/2, (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.64), well known as proton conducting solid electrolytes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell, were deposited by magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction analysis of the as deposited films reveals the presence of single-phase perovskite structure. The films were deposited on four different substrates (c-Al2O3, LaAlO3〈100〉, LaAlO3〈110〉, LaAlO3〈111〉) yielding random, (110)- or (100)-oriented films. The stability of the as-deposited films was assessed by annealing in air at 600 °C for 2 h. The annealing treatment revealed instabilities of the perovskite structure for the (110) and randomly oriented films, but not for (100) oriented film. The instability of the coating under heat treatment was attributed to the low oxygen content in the film (understoichiometry) prior annealing combined with the surface energy and atomic layers stacking along the growth direction. An understoichiometric (100) oriented perovskite films showed higher stability of the structure under an annealing in air at 600 °C.

  • Photoemission and low energy electron microscopy study on the formation and nitridation of indium droplets on Si (111)7 x 7 surfaces
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 531, s. 61-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation and nitridation of indium(In) droplets on Si (1 1 1)7 x 7, with regard to In droplet epitaxy growth of InN nanostructures, were studied using a spectroscopic photoemission and low energy electron microscopy, for the In coverages from 0.07 to 2.3 monolayer (ML). The results reveal that the In adatoms formed well-ordered clusters while keeping the Si (1 1 1)7 x 7 surface periodicity at 0.07 ML and a single root 3 x root 3 phase at 0.3 ML around 440-470 degrees C. At 0.82 ML, owing to the presence of structurally defect areas beside the 7 x 7 domains, 3-D In droplets evolved concomitantly with the formation of 4 x 1-In cluster chains, accompanied by a transition in surface electric property from semiconducting to metallic. Further increasing the In to 2.3 ML led to a moderate increase in number density and an appreciable lateral growth of the droplets, as well as the multi-domain In phases. Upon nitridation with NH3 at similar to 480 degrees C, besides the nitridation of the In droplets, the N radicals also dissociated the In - Si bonds to form Si - N. This caused a partial disintegration of the ordered In phase and removal of the In adatoms between the In droplets.

  • Evaluation of active materials designed for use in printable electrochromic polymer displays
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 515:4, s. 2485-2492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a step towards roll-to-roll production of polymer-based electrochromic displays on flexible substrates, nine thiophene-based polymers and copolymers designed to increase the contrast of displays based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrene-sulfonic acid) have been synthesized and evaluated with respect to their absorbance (contrast), switch speed, and ability to switch reversibly in a water-based electrolyte. The results of the evaluation, including cyclic voltammetry and optically visible absorption, provide a basis for understanding what an aqueous electrolyte electrochromic display requires in terms of oxidation potential and material stability, and the effect of chemical structure on the reversibility and speed of switching. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
