  • Governance of Regional Innovation Systems: An Evolutionary Conceptual Model of How Firms Engage
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management proceedings, Vancouver, Canada. - 0065-0668. ; 2015:2364, s. 1-25
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper draws upon insights from social science, in order to propose a conceptualization of the governance of a regional innovation system. We are specifically interested in ones initiated through public policy and aiming to stimulate the competitiveness of firms through developing new technological knowledge through collaborative research involving different organizations. We are assuming firms choose whether, when and how to collaborate. This paper proposes a conceptual model, which focuses upon the governance processes at the regional level of this translation of knowledge into innovation and entrepreneurship. The underlying argumentation for the model is built from existing research. We interpret that regional innovation governance depends upon capacity building among three heterogeneous organizations – namely university-government-industry. This represents a case of a polycentric, adaptive, complex and self-organizing system, whereby collective action is supported by norms and institutions in order to develop a region resource pool. Hence, our expectation is that our conceptual model will help explain why different outcomes are possible. The concluding section discusses a future research agenda, by going further to explore how to define and analyze the attributes (mechanisms) enabling governance of a regional innovation system as well as to analyze how public policy and firms engage.

  • Lone Inventors and Technological Novelty
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Annual Meeting of Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • According to extant studies, single and independent inventors have a lower probability of creating breakthrough inventions than teams and organizations. Scholars have, however, in recent years highlighted the need to distinguish between inventions’ novelty and value or technological impact, rather than treat the former as an inherent dimension of the latter. At the same time, there is a long tradition of research on brainstorming and group creativity asserting that collaboration in teams, or similarly in organizations, is associated with less novel outcomes, as opposed to individuals working alone. This paper accordingly explores the relationship between lone inventors and the likelihood of generating technological novelty, as compared to inventors working alone and/or in organizations. This paper provides the first systematic and large-scale study of this topic, by analyzing all U.S. patents applied for between 1986 and 2010. The findings suggest that both independent and single inventors have an advantage when it comes to novelty generation compared to collaboration in teams and/or organizations. The results also indicate that the technological complexity of the invention moderates the studied relationships; Single and independent inventors lose their relatively higher probability of generating technological novelty under higher complexity. The paper contributes to the understanding of the role of lone inventors in innovation, as well as to the antecedents of technological novelty.

  • From Family Embeddedness to Families Embedding in Migrants' Opportunity Development Processes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; 2021:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the roles of family in migrant entrepreneurs’ opportunity development. We employ the opportunity development and family embeddedness for theory building purposes. We conducted a longitudinal inductive case study on four cases of migrant entrepreneurs who have established businesses in Sweden and who have their origins in Lebanon and Syria, Cameroon, and Mexico, documented with 29 interviews and field observations. The paper identifies families embedding occurring by means of three norms of reciprocity and obligations that facilitate the opportunity development process. These norms are fulfilling the expectations of family and the existing family business, regularly interacting with family and the existing family business, and deploying family and business loyalty. These norms are connected to specific sub-processes of opportunity development, namely, the generation of an entrepreneurial idea, shaping an entrepreneurial idea, and defining the (new) family venture offering. By identifying these norms in the opportunity development processes, we theorize that migrant entrepreneurs rely on different family members and the existing family business from the home or host country at different moments of the opportunity development process. Such dynamic creates different norms of reciprocity and obligations for migrant entrepreneurs and their families, which influence the opportunity development.

  • Drivers of Entrepreneurial Passion Among Graduates in Venture Creation Programs
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; :1, s. 1-1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop and test an analytical framework that builds on experiential learning theory to explore drivers of entrepreneurial passion among graduates from venture creation programs (VCP). The framework identifies two main sources of experiential learning (direct and vicarious experience), and three temporal vantage points (pre-, peri- and post-education) where such experiences may occur. We employ fsQCA analysis on a sample of graduates from a Swedish university to identify causal paths leading to configurations of experiences that ultimately lead to higher entrepreneurial passion. Overall, analyses yielded a total of four effective configurations where each represents a combination of present or absent conditions that are jointly sufficient for producing the indicated outcome. While both direct and vicarious experiential learning in combination with other causal conditions can drive high entrepreneurial passion among VCP graduates, the results suggest strongest evidence for causal relations between direct experiential learning and high entrepreneurial passion. Moreover, the results suggest that post- and peri-educational experiences have stronger causal impact compared to pre-educational experiences.

  • Motivation, Knowledge Sharing, and Need Satisfaction in Groups
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research confirms that there are many forms of motivation associated with various organizational outcomes, and that there are various ways in which motivation can be supported. Self-determination theory shows that autonomous motivation is related to many important organizational outcomes and that the support of basic psychological needs helps to develop the motivations even further. However, additional understanding on whether different types of motivation may be related to important organizational outcomes more than others is needed. In addition, more understanding of the processes of basic psychological need satisfaction and work motivation needs to be gained. Therefore, we have examined relations between different types of motivation and outcomes and ways in which group members may increase their need satisfaction, and autonomous motivation. Hence, this symposium aims at enhancing our understanding of motivation and need satisfaction of individuals and groups in organizations. In this symposium, three empirical papers will be presented, using different methods and samples in different contexts, to explore (1) knowledge sharing motivation and (2) how group members can enhance satisfaction of their basic needs and autonomous motivation. Following the presentations, Anja Van den Broeck, a major contributor in work motivation, will serve as the discussant; to provide both theoretical and practical suggestions and lead an interactive group discussion.

  • A Signaling Theory Of Entrepreneurial Venture’s Valuation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; 2014:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates how early termination of venture capital (VC) investment in entrepreneurial ventures affect the ability of these young ventures into acquiring further resources necessary for survival and growth. We propose that young entrepreneurial ventures face a higher cost of external financing if existing investors stop investing in the next rounds of financing. Future investors, faced with great unobservable qualities of young companies and the uncertainty surrounding their financial prospect, rely on observable characteristics to appraise a company; The continuation of investment by existing investors confers a positive signal about the quality of young ventures and that young ventures, as endorsed by further commitment of capital, are more likely to perform better than otherwise comparable ventures that lack such escalated commitment.

  • Examining Gender Equality in Various Organizational and National Contexts
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - New York : Academy of Management. - 2151-6561 .- 0065-0668.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The often-noted positive increase in women’s participation in the workforce has not been observed equally across sectors, countries, or continents. Current literature on women’s careers, work opportunities, and experiences has examined diverse individual and contextual factors that enable or hinder their respective career progression and access to leadership positions. Building on and extending those themes, this presenter symposium adopts a multi-layered approach/lens to examine women’s career opportunities and leadership experiences in diverse organizational, professional, national and regional settings. Incorporating theoretical, ontological and epistemological diversity and drawing on systematic reviews and empirical evidence, the collection of papers showcase innovative insights into women’s career opportunities and experiences over time, including their access to and experience of leadership roles. In line with this year’s AOM theme “Creating A Better World Together”, the symposium will generate critical reflection for gender-inclusive careers, HRM and leadership scholarship, discourse, policy, and practice in various contexts such as USA, Canada, UK, Belgium, Sweden, India, Bangladesh, Mexico.

  • Overcoming Gender Bias in Higher Education Institutions: The Importance of Gender Equality Plans
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - New York : Academy of Management. - 2151-6561 .- 0065-0668.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business & Management (B&M) schools and the wider academic context have been characterized as based on a traditional, linear male model according to which academics focus on their career only, work full- time, and have no family responsibilities In line with the current AOM theme “Putting the Worker Front and Center”, this symposium brings together four papers that showcase theoretical and practical insights to achieve gender equality in higher education institutions. The symposium starts by providing a scoping review of gender bias in academia and goes beyond shedding light on barriers, to focus on showcasing effective actions taken to reach gender equality in academic institutions in Lebanon, and across a variety of European countries including Greece, Sweden, the UK, Netherlands, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, France, and Belgium. The takeaways of this symposium provide culturally diversified insights into the progress made towards achieving gender equality in academia, with reflections on both theoretical and practical implications on gender equality in academia.
