  • Typifications of Contemporary New Venture Units : An Exploratory Analysis of Visual Registers
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation ‘labs’ and ‘garages’ and units sometimes simply called ‘X’ are mushrooming in large corporations. Such new venture units are, however, not a novel phenomenon and have gone in and out of fashion since the 1970s. Extant work conceives of these units as vehicles for corporate venturing and discusses them as places that allow internal new ventures to grow in an environment, designed specifically to support and protect the development of fledgling new ventures with the appropriate culture and routines, until they are ready to be adopted by the mainstream organization. This understanding is, however, colored by the common conceptual and methodological choices of prior research and may overlook other meanings of NVUs. In this study, we thus problematize the ‘settled’ view of NVUs in the literature and study corporations’ intersubjectively shared, situated and culturally embedded ideas about NVUs, and their essential characteristics, that are embodied in visual representations of NVUs. For this purpose, we explore recurring, typified symbolic instantiations of actors and acts, as well as the use of visual language, in 464 images used to present and introduce NVUs on the websites of 30 large, European corporations. We find that the habitat of NVUs, and life inside it, (i.e. NVUs way of working and working conditions) and not ventures and outputs are central to the visual discourse."

  • The Three Loci of Organizational Identity Work : Prospective, Current and Former Members
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; 2022:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizations work continuously to form, maintain and change their identities. This identity work has this far has been assumed to be carried out only with respect to the members of an organization. In this longitudinal study of identity formation, maintenance, and change we show that the identity work of some organizations has multiple loci. The Swedish secondary school that sought to form and maintain an identity of an ‘excellent school’ directed its identity work not only at its current staff and students, but also towards its prospective as well as former students. Multiple loci of identity work, we argue, is typical for organization where the characteristics of the members are important to its identity. Ignoring the identity work directed at prospective members ignores its fundamental importance in setting the scope for any identity work that can be carried out with the members of an organization. Re- conceptualizing identity work to also include efforts directed outside the organization, furthermore, address the critique that the organizational identity literature is too narrow in its focus on the formal boundaries of organizations and it opens up for an understanding of the sometimes competitive interactions across the identity work of several organizations.

  • Corporate Demography and Income Inequality : Revisited
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - New York : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; :1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We replicate and extend Sorenson and Sorensen’s (2007) study how corporate demography shapes workforce wage inequality across region-industries by: (i) replicating their original results from Danish regions in 1992-1998 using a close to identical dataset of industry-regions in neighboring Sweden during the same time-period, (ii) extending the study to 2012 to gauge the corporate demography – wage inequality relationship during a period of rapidly increasing inequality, and (iii) expanding the scope of the model by two new measures of organizational form diversity. Our findings suggest a fairly strong test-retest validity, an enhanced effect of corporate demography over time, but that more nuanced measure of organization form diversity do not necessarily enhance the model’s explanatory power.

  • Blood in the board room : family relationships influencing the functions of the board
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; :January, Meeting Abstract Supplement, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We develop the concept of family through using insights from evolutionary psychology, stressing genetic kinship, i.e., blood relationships. We apply the family concept on the functional emphasis of family firm’s boards. Testing the hypotheses on a convenient-sample of 68 small and medium sized Swedish family firms, we find indications of blood relationships influencing the functions of the board. We suggest the development of the family conception according to these lines, where blood and the basic characteristics of nepotism are constitutive.

  • The construction of social performance feedback in digital communication channels
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firms increasingly need to perform well socially and therefore often adjust their strategies based on social performance feedback. However, social performance feedback tends to be multivocal and non-linear particularly in digital communication channels to which firm-stakeholder communication increasingly moves. This makes it hard for firms to understand when their social performance is acceptable and when they need to make a change. We present a longitudinal case study to unpack the dynamics of social performance construction in digital communication channels. We identify recurring loops of social performance construction. Our findings suggest that in particular mixed feedback influentially shapes perceived social performance levels, while clearly positive or negative feedback has little effect. We further show how stakeholders self-police discussion channels, which reduces heterogeneity of feedback, supporting the firm’s ability to comprehend social performance feedback. Based on these insights, we present a model on how social performance is iteratively constructed between firm and stakeholders.

  • From Family Embeddedness to Families Embedding in Migrants' Opportunity Development Processes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; 2021:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the roles of family in migrant entrepreneurs’ opportunity development. We employ the opportunity development and family embeddedness for theory building purposes. We conducted a longitudinal inductive case study on four cases of migrant entrepreneurs who have established businesses in Sweden and who have their origins in Lebanon and Syria, Cameroon, and Mexico, documented with 29 interviews and field observations. The paper identifies families embedding occurring by means of three norms of reciprocity and obligations that facilitate the opportunity development process. These norms are fulfilling the expectations of family and the existing family business, regularly interacting with family and the existing family business, and deploying family and business loyalty. These norms are connected to specific sub-processes of opportunity development, namely, the generation of an entrepreneurial idea, shaping an entrepreneurial idea, and defining the (new) family venture offering. By identifying these norms in the opportunity development processes, we theorize that migrant entrepreneurs rely on different family members and the existing family business from the home or host country at different moments of the opportunity development process. Such dynamic creates different norms of reciprocity and obligations for migrant entrepreneurs and their families, which influence the opportunity development.

  • Drivers of Entrepreneurial Passion Among Graduates in Venture Creation Programs
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; :1, s. 1-1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop and test an analytical framework that builds on experiential learning theory to explore drivers of entrepreneurial passion among graduates from venture creation programs (VCP). The framework identifies two main sources of experiential learning (direct and vicarious experience), and three temporal vantage points (pre-, peri- and post-education) where such experiences may occur. We employ fsQCA analysis on a sample of graduates from a Swedish university to identify causal paths leading to configurations of experiences that ultimately lead to higher entrepreneurial passion. Overall, analyses yielded a total of four effective configurations where each represents a combination of present or absent conditions that are jointly sufficient for producing the indicated outcome. While both direct and vicarious experiential learning in combination with other causal conditions can drive high entrepreneurial passion among VCP graduates, the results suggest strongest evidence for causal relations between direct experiential learning and high entrepreneurial passion. Moreover, the results suggest that post- and peri-educational experiences have stronger causal impact compared to pre-educational experiences.

  • A collective action view on the orchestration of emerging ecosystems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses the collective orchestration of an emerging ecosystem within the maritime industry. Orchestration is typically conceptualised as a process driven by a single focal firm that does so by controlling a platform, technology, resource or knowledge. This paper analyses a case of collective orchestration, where a group of firms jointly establish an ecosystem vision and implement activities towards its realisation. This paper contributes to the literature on ecosystem orchestration with a process model on collective orchestration that explains how a collective orchestrates an emerging ecosystem and simultaneously coordinates its internal activities to maintain cohesion. Thus, the paper complements current understandings of ecosystem orchestration and leadership. The process model was developed through the longitudinal analysis of a case using an abductive approach, iteratively moving between data analysis and drawing on prior literature on ecosystem orchestration and collective action theory.

  • A Retrospective Study of 360 Digital Transformations and a Combined Prospect Theory
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; 2022:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a mixed-method retrospective study of 360 digital transformations and the reasons for the respective success or failure in each case, as perceived and explained by 180 domain experts from 42 countries. The purpose of the study is to investigate why actual digital transformations succeeded or failed, in order to develop insights, critical reflections, theories, and future research paths. Using open-ended questions, we ask the experts to think of one failed and one successful digital transformation. We ask them to describe the projects, and to provide their own explanations for the success or failure in each case. We analyze the qualitative data using cutting-edge language technology, network analysis, and machine learning. The findings reveal that small number of factors dictates the outcome for a large majority of cases, and a couple of those factors predict success or failure with a high degree of confidence. We theorize a mechanism for organizational behavior. We suggest that the findings can have important theoretical and practical implications for how organizational change is understood, and, ultimately, managed. We discuss whether the findings may provide new research questions on the essence of management and its impact on performance of business organizations, both during transformational change and under normal conditions.

  • Picking the low-hanging apples : The case of “reverse cream skimming” among Swedish private schools
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; :1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increasingly common practice across the world is to introduce private alternatives into publically funded education systems. Economists have found that following from this practice, private schools often engage in what is called “cream skimming”, where they attract solely the most highly able students and thereby worsen the socio-economic stratification of the education system. In this paper, we argue that under conditions where for-profit schools are allowed, but they only receive a flat voucher per student, the phenomenon of “reverse cream skimming” where private schools selectively target the least motivated students is a likely outcome. We show this to be the case in a quantitative analysis of admissions to the secondary schools in a Swedish municipality from 1999 to 2017. Implications for theories of how schools compete, public education policy, and for institutional theory are discussed.
