  • Designing simulation experiments with controllable and uncontrollable factors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 Winter Simuation Conference. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781424427079 ; , s. 2909-2915
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we propose a new method for designing computer experiments inspired by the split plot designs used in physical experimentation. The basic layout is that each set of controllable factor settings corresponds to a whole plot for which a number of subplots, each corresponding to one combination of settings of the uncontrollable factors, is employed. The caveat is a desire that the subplots within each whole plot cover the design space uniformly. A further desire is that in the combined design, where all experimental runs are considered at once, the uniformity of the design space coverage should be guaranteed. Our proposed method allows for a large number of uncontrollable and controllable settings to be run in a limited number of runs while uniformly covering the design space for the uncontrollable factors

  • A simplified modeling approach for human system interaction
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 Winter Simuation Conference. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781424427079 ; , s. 903-908
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite increasing dependency on technology, the importance of humans is expected to increase and to provide a realistic basis for decision support; both technical and organizational processes must be included in simulation models. In a rapidly changing environment, skill development is also important and should be considered when developing simulation models. This paper describes a three step straightforward method that support the implementation of supporting (human dependent) processes, operators competence and competence development using learning curves to obtain a more representative simulation of system performance. The effect on the performance measures are also demonstrated based on a case study of a highly automated press line. The advantages and disadvantages with the proposed method are also discussed.

  • A Methodology for Input Data Management in Discrete Event Simulation Projects
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: In Proceedings of the 2008 Winter Simulation Conference. - 9781424427079 ; , s. 1727-1735
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Discrete event simulation (DES) projects rely heavily on high input data quality. Therefore, the input data management process is very important and, thus, consumes an extensive amount of time. To secure quality and increase rapidity in DES projects, there are well structured methodologies to follow, but a detailed guideline for how to perform the crucial process of handling input data, is missing. This paper presents such a structured methodology, including description of 13 activities and their internal connections. Having this kind of methodology available, our hypothesis is that the structured way to work increases rapidity for input data management and, consequently, also for entire DES projects. The improvement is expected to be larger in companies with low or medium experience in DES.
