  • Electron Signatures of Reconnection in a Global eVlasiator Simulation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geospace plasma simulations have progressed toward more realistic descriptions of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction from magnetohydrodynamic to hybrid ion-kinetic, such as the state-of-the-art Vlasiator model. Despite computational advances, electron scales have been out of reach in a global setting. eVlasiator, a novel Vlasiator submodule, shows for the first time how electromagnetic fields driven by global hybrid-ion kinetics influence electrons, resulting in kinetic signatures. We analyze simulated electron distributions associated with reconnection sites and compare them with Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft observations. Comparison with MMS shows that key electron features, such as reconnection inflows, heated outflows, flat-top distributions, and bidirectional streaming, are in remarkable agreement. Thus, we show that many reconnection-related features can be reproduced despite strongly truncated electron physics and an ion-scale spatial resolution. Ion-scale dynamics and ion-driven magnetic fields are shown to be significantly responsible for the environment that produces electron dynamics observed by spacecraft in near-Earth plasmas.

  • Differing Mechanisms of New Particle Formation at Two Arctic Sites
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 48:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New particle formation in the Arctic atmosphere is an important source of aerosol particles. Understanding the processes of Arctic secondary aerosol formation is crucial due to their significant impact on cloud properties and therefore Arctic amplification. We observed the molecular formation of new particles from low-volatility vapors at two Arctic sites with differing surroundings. In Svalbard, sulfuric acid (SA) and methane sulfonic acid (MSA) contribute to the formation of secondary aerosol and to some extent to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). This occurs via ion-induced nucleation of SA and NH3 and subsequent growth by mainly SA and MSA condensation during springtime and highly oxygenated organic molecules during summertime. By contrast, in an ice-covered region around Villum, we observed new particle formation driven by iodic acid but its concentration was insufficient to grow nucleated particles to CCN sizes. Our results provide new insight about sources and precursors of Arctic secondary aerosol particles.

  • North Atlantic Ocean Circulation and Related Exchange of Heat and Salt Between Water Masses
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 50:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The meridional transport of mass, heat, and salt in the North Atlantic Ocean is often described for separate regions and parts, but rarely are all components of the circulation followed at once. Lagrangian trajectories have here been used to divide the North Atlantic Ocean circulation into four different pathways. In the boundary between the Subpolar and Subtropical Gyres, we show that the northward flowing waters exchange heat and salt with the water originating from the subpolar regions. This subsurface water mass exchange takes place in the first 1,000 m and is a key piece of the puzzle of how the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation transports heat and salt. Between 30 & DEG; and 60 & DEG;N the northward flowing water loses 8.8 Gg/s salt to the Subpolar Gyre and an equivalent loss of only 1.7 Gg/s to the atmosphere due to the net fresh water influx.

  • Tides on Other Earths : Implications for Exoplanet and Palaeo-Tidal Simulations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 47:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key controller of a planet's rotational evolution, and hence habitability, is tidal dissipation, which on Earth is dominated by the ocean tides. Because exoplanet or deep‐time Earth topographies are unknown, a statistical ensemble is used to constrain possible tidal dissipation rates on an Earth‐like planet. A dedicated tidal model is used together with 120 random continental configurations to simulate Earth's semidiurnal lunar tide. The results show a possible ocean tidal dissipation range spanning 3 orders of magnitude, between 2.3 GWto 1.9 TW (1 TW=1012 W). When model resolution is considered, this compares well with theoretical limits derived for the energetics of Earth's present‐day deep ocean. Consequently, continents exert a fundamental control on tidal dissipation rates and we suggest that plate tectonics on a planet will induce a time‐varying dissipation analogous to Earth's. This will alter rotational periods over millions of years and further complicate the role of tides for planetary evolution.Plain Language SummaryThe daylength of a planet is key for habitability because it regulates the rate with which solar radiation is received and redistributed at the surface. A main controller of a planet's daylength is the ocean tide, because the dissipation of tidal energy works as a brake on the planet's spin, increasing the daylength. Tides are sensitive to the continental arrangement on a planet, but there are no details of the surface of any exoplanet and only limited information of what Earth looked like in the distant past. The change in Earth's daylength forces the Moon to recede into a higher orbit, but the present‐day recession rate is very high and does not fit our age models of the moon, implying that the tides must have been much weaker in the distant past. Here, we use a series of tidal predictions for random continental configurations of Earth to provide a range of tidal dissipation rates and thus an estimate of how the tides in the deep past may have evolved as Earth's continents grew more and more complex. This research also provides a range of dissipation rates that can be used for simulations of the rotational and orbital evolution of exoplanets.

  • Southern Ocean Solar Reflection Biases in CMIP6 Models Linked to Cloud Phase and Vertical Structure Representations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the Southern Ocean (SO, 40°S–70°S), climate models have consistently underestimated solar reflection. Here we evaluate the relationship between cloud profiles, cloud phase and radiation over the SO in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models against Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations. We find that the lack of solar reflection is slightly improved in CMIP6 models compared to CMIP5's, attributable to a better representation of cloud fraction and phase. We show that clouds have a different vertical structure and radiative effect south and north of where the 0°C isotherm meets the surface (∼55°S). Although the models capture the greater vertical extent of clouds south of 55°S, they fail to reproduce the observed increase in solar reflection, which we pinpoint to cloud phase biases. Increasing CMIP6 supercooled liquid cloud opacity should help reduce their persistent shortwave biases.

  • Modeling Pan-Arctic Peatland Carbon Dynamics Under Alternative Warming Scenarios
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Peatlands store large amounts of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems and they are vulnerable to recent warming. The ongoing warming may change their carbon sink capacity and could reduce their potential to sequester carbon. In this study, we simulated peatland carbon dynamics in distinct future climate conditions using the peatland-vegetation model (LPJ-GUESS). The study examined whether less pronounced warming could further enhance the peatland carbon sink capacity and buffer the effects of climate change. It also determined which trajectory peatland carbon balance would follow, what the main drivers were, and which one would dominate in the future. We found that peatlands will largely retain their carbon sink capacity under the climate scenario RCP2.6 to RCP6.0. They are projected to shift from a carbon sink to a carbon-neutral (5-10 gC m(-2) yr(-1)) in RCP8.5. Higher respiration rates will dominate the net productivity in a warmer world leading to a reduction in carbon sink capacity.

  • The Contribution of Vegetation-Climate Feedback and Resultant Sea Ice Loss to Amplified Arctic Warming During the Mid-Holocene
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding influence of vegetation on past temperature changes in the Arctic region would help isolate uncertainty and build understanding of its broader climate system, with implications for paleoclimate reconstructions and future climate change. Using an Earth system model EC-Earth, we conduct a series of simulations to investigate the impact of vegetation-climate feedback on the Arctic climate during the mid-Holocene. Results show Arctic greening induced by the warming resulting from stronger orbital forcing, further amplifies the Arctic warming. The increased vegetation contributes 0.33 degrees C of Arctic warming and 0.35 x 106 km2 of Arctic sea ice loss. Increased Arctic vegetation leads to reduced land surface albedo and increased evapotranspiration, both of which cause local warming in spring and summer. The resultant sea ice loss causes warming in the following seasons, with atmospheric circulation anomalies further amplifying the warming. Our results highlight the significant contribution of vegetation-climate feedback to Arctic climate under natural conditions.

  • EC-Earth Simulations Reveal Enhanced Inter-Hemispheric Thermal Contrast During the Last Interglacial Further Intensified the Indian Monsoon
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Paleoclimate proxy data indicate a stronger Indian summer monsoon (ISM) during the Last Interglacial (LIG) than in the present day. This is largely attributed to orbital forcing induced high seasonal and latitudinal insolation anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere during LIG. According to the general circulation model EC-Earth3, the simulated ISM rainfall is increased by approximately 28% during the LIG compared to the pre-industrial period as a result of the orbital forcing and the amplified land-sea contrast due to both local and remote ocean feedbacks. Although the LIG is often portrayed as a potential analogue of future warmer climates, our study suggests that the enhanced inter-hemispheric thermal gradient during the LIG strengthened the ISM, in opposition to the observed weakening of ISM under present-day warming.

  • Late Miocene Onset of Tasman Leakage and Southern Hemisphere Supergyre Ushers in Near-Modern Circulation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 48:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study provides a Miocene-to-recent history of Tasman Leakage (TL), driving surface-to-intermediate waters from the Pacific into the Indian Ocean. TL, in addition to Indonesian ThroughFlow (ITF), constitutes an important part of the Southern Hemisphere Supergyre. Here, we employ deep-sea benthic delta C-13 timeseries from the southwestern Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans to identify the history of Tasman Leakage. The delta C-13 results combined with sedimentary evidence show that an inter-ocean connection south of Australia existed from 7 Ma onward. A southward shift in Westerlies combined with a northward movement of Australia created the oceanic corridor necessary for Tasman Leakage (between Australia and the sub-Antarctic Front) at this time. Furthermore, changes in the northern limb of the Supergyre (ITF) are evident in the sedimentary record on Broken Ridge from similar to 3 to 2 Ma when Banda Sea intermediate waters started originating from the North Pacific.

  • Annual Mean Arctic Amplification 1970-2020: Observed and Simulated by CMIP6 Climate Models
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 49:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the annual mean Arctic Amplification (AA) index varied between two and three during the 1970-2000 period, it reached values exceeding four during the first two decades of the 21st century. The AA did not change in a continuous fashion but rather in two sharp increases around 1986 and 1999. During those steps the mean global surface air temperature trend remained almost constant, while the Arctic trend increased. Although the "best" CMIP6 models reproduce the increasing trend of the AA in 1980s they do not capture the sharply increasing trend of the AA after 1999 including its rapid step-like increase. We propose that the first sharp AA increase around 1986 is due to external forcing, while the second step close to 1999 is due to internal climate variability, which models cannot reproduce in the observed time.
