  • Changing the Conversation in Washington? An Illustrative Case Study of President Trump's Air Strikes on Syria, 2017
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Diplomacy & Statecraft. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0959-2296 .- 1557-301X. ; 30:3, s. 536-555
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This analysis uses case study methodology to further the understanding of the diversionary theory of war in specific cases. It employs a model consisting of five propositions that build upon existing qualitative research on diversionary war theory. The synthesised framework examines one possible case of American diversionary military actions: President Donald Trump ' s decision to launch missile strikes against Syrian airfields on 7 April 2017. The study tests the descriptive accuracy and further develops the diversionary theory of war, in essence, generally suggesting that empirical support for the diversionary logic in this case is mixed.

  • Foreign Policy Analysis and the Study of the Diplomatic History of the Raoul Wallenberg Case
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Diplomacy & Statecraft. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0959-2296 .- 1557-301X. ; 26:3, s. 424-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 1982, claims were made that the Swedish diplomat, Raoul Wallenberg, when preparing in mid-January 1945 for his trip to Soviet military headquarter in Debrecen, north of Budapest, concealed large amounts of valuables-gold and jewellery-in his car. Moreover, the argument exists that Russian discovery of these valuables had a significant impact on both Swedish and Soviet handling of his case. Recently re-surfacing in a biography of Wallenberg, this claim is incorrect. The testimonies referred to in its support are fraught with serious weaknesses and, the causal chain allegedly set off about finding the valuables is not verifiable. This analysis argues that the study of the diplomatic history of the Wallenberg case could benefit significantly by taking some basic insights from the field of foreign policy analysis into account.

  • Rethinking Diplomatic and Development Outcomes through Sport : Toward a Participatory Paradigm of Multi-Stakeholder Diplomacy
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Diplomacy & Statecraft. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1557-301X .- 0959-2296. ; 27:2, s. 231-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sport diplomacy provides a challenging example of how diplomaticpractice is changing in light of a proliferation of actors, agendas, and modes of communication. This context hasinspired greater interest in techniques for managing the participationof others in the pursuit of desired outcomes, such asdebates surrounding multi-stakeholder diplomacy, publicdiplomacy, and soft power. However, these debates oftenderive from an instrumentalist perspective of exerting influenceand securing outcomes. Sport, on the other hand, involves sites and practices capable of supporting communitiesin the identification of their own goals, and of supporting thedevelopment of strategies and skills that can achieve thosegoals. Its participatory qualities challenge instrumentalistapproaches to diplomatic objective setting, and potentiallyreveal some of the ways in which diplomacy can be morediffuse and inclusive. This article uses the example of sportdiplomacy to question the basis for instrumentalist diplomaticobjective setting and to explore the theoretical basis for participatorymodels of multi-stakeholder diplomacy.
