  • Height-controlled nanowire branches on nanotrees using a polymer mask
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 18:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of complex three-dimensional dendritic structures is an important step in the application of semiconductor nanowires. One promising method for achieving this is the sequential seeding of multiple generations of epitaxial nanowires using metal seed particles. However, it is difficult to control and predict the position of second and higher generation nanowires with respect to the first generation. Here we demonstrate a procedure for controlling the position of second-generation epitaxial nanowire branches on vertically aligned nanowire trunks. This method uses a spun-on polymer layer that masks first-generation wires to a specified height, preventing the growth of nanowire branches at lower positions as well as new nanowire growth on the substrate. This method appears not to be dependent on the materials or growth system (in this case MOVPE-grown GaP is demonstrated), and hence is likely to be applicable to a variety of materials systems and growth procedures using metal seed particles.

  • Strain mapping in free-standing heterostructured wurtzite InAs/InP nanowires
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The strain distribution in heterostructured wurtzite InAs/InP nanowires is measured by a peak finding technique using high resolution transmission electron microscopy images. We find that nanowires with a diameter of about 20 nm show a 10 nm strained area over the InAs/InP interface and the rest of the wire has a relaxed lattice structure. The lattice parameters and elastic properties for the wurtzite structure of InAs and InP are calculated and a nanowire interface is simulated using finite element calculations. Both the method and the experimental results are validated using a combination of finite element calculations and image simulations.

  • Controlled fabrication of individual silicon quantum rods yielding high intensity, polarized light emission
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 20:50, s. 1-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Elongated silicon quantum dots (also referred to as rods) were fabricated using a lithographic process which reliably yields sufficient numbers of emitters. These quantum rods are perfectly aligned and the vast majority are spatially separated well enough to enable single-dot spectroscopy. Not only do they exhibit extraordinarily high linear polarization with respect to both absorption and emission, but the silicon rods also appear to luminesce much more brightly than their spherical counterparts. Significantly increased quantum efficiency and almost unity degree of linear polarization render these quantum rods perfect candidates for numerous applications.

  • Precursor evaluation for in situ InP nanowire doping
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 19:44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of tetraethyltin (TESn) and dimethylzinc (DMZn) as in situ n- and p-dopant precursors during particle-assisted growth of InP nanowires is reported. Gate voltage dependent transport measurements demonstrate that the nanowires can be predictably synthesized as either n- or p-type. These doped nanowires can be characterized based on their electric field response and we find that n- type doping scales over a range from 10(17) to 10(19) cm(-3) with increasing input TESn dopant molar fraction. On the other hand, the p-type doping using DMZn saturates at low levels, probably related to a strong increase in nanowire growth rate with increasing DMZn molar fractions. By optimizing growth conditions with respect to tapering, axial pn-junctions exhibiting rectifying behavior were fabricated. The pn-junctions can be operated as light emitting diodes.

  • Guiding motor-propelled molecules with nanoscale precision through silanized bi-channel structures
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 16:6, s. 710-717
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the design and fabrication of a channel structure for high precision guidance and achieving excellent confinement properties for motor-propelled molecular shuttles. The techniques used to manufacture the channel structure are mainly e-beam lithography and selective monolayer functionalization. The structure consists of two lateral layers of concentric channels on a SiO2 surface made biocompatible with the molecular motors. The quality and advantages of the design are demonstrated by experiments using the motor proteins actin and myosin. The special channel geometry leads to stable biochemical conditions with full motor protein functionality. ATP is sufficiently supplied to all parts of the structure by dedicated service channels, as is the venting of ADP and P-i (inorganic phosphorus). Channels of different widths (100-700 nm) and shapes are fabricated and measurements made on them.

  • Electrospraying of colloidal nanoparticles for seeding of nanostructure growth
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 18:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanometre-sized particles (1-100 nm) have unique properties receiving growing attention in wide areas of research. Here, a convenient method to deposit size-selected nanoparticles on surfaces by means of electrospraying colloidal suspensions in the aerosol phase is presented. We demonstrate the deposition of individual nanoparticles and the feasibility of this method in seeding gold particles for nanostructure growth. An advantage of the present method is the easy set-up and operation, using only commercially available machinery and substances. Problems regarding low deposition rates and colloidal remnants are approached, e. g. the aerosol flow is examined in a differential mobility analyser. This method is not material dependent and could be extended to deposit any colloidal particle.

  • InSb heterostructure nanowires: MOVPE growth under extreme lattice mismatch.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 20:49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the growth of InSb-based nanowire heterostructures by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy and use it to integrate InSb on extremely lattice-mismatched III-V nanowire templates made of InAs, InP, and GaAs. Influence of temperature, V/III ratio, and diameter are investigated in order to investigate the growth rate and morphology. The range of growth temperatures used for InSb nanowire growth is very similar to that used for planar growth due to the nature of the precursor decomposition. This makes optimization of growth parameters very important, and more difficult than for most other nanowire III-V materials. Analysis of the InSb nanowire epitaxial quality when grown on InAs, InP, and GaAs, along with InSb segment and particle compositions are reported. This successful direct integration of InSb nanowires, on nanowire templates with unprecedented strain levels show great promise for fabrication of vertical InSb devices.

  • Surface-enhanced Raman scattering of rhodamine 6G on nanowire arrays decorated with gold nanoparticles
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 19:27, s. 5-275712
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of rhodamine 6G (R6G) adsorbed on Au nanoparticles attached to InP nanowires. We find that nanowire arrays act as frameworks for effective SERS substrates with a significantly higher Raman signal sensitivity than a planar framework of Au nanoparticles adsorbed two-dimensionally on a flat surface. The SERS signal displays a clear polarization-dependent effect when the nanowires are arranged in a row. We also find that the SERS signal increases with time during continuous laser illumination. The plasmon-enhanced optical forces between Au nanoparticles may either move pairs of nanoparticles closer together or attract adsorbed molecules by moving them to the junctions of Au nanoparticle aggregates. Such effects by plasmon optical forces may cause the observed increase of the SERS signal with continuous laser illumination.

  • Ultrahigh sensitivity made simple : nanoplasmonic label-free biosensing with an extremely low limit-of-detection for bacterial and cancer diagnostics.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 20:43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a simple and robust scheme for biosensing with an ultralow limit-of-detection down to several pg cm(-2) (or several tens of attomoles cm(-2)) based on optical label-free biodetection with localized surface plasmon resonances. The scheme utilizes cost-effective optical components and comprises a white light source, a properly functionalized sensor surface enclosed in a simple fluidics chip, and a spectral analyzer. The sensor surface is produced by a bottom-up nanofabrication technique with hole mask colloidal lithography. Despite its simplicity, the method is able to reliably detect protein-protein binding events at low picomolar and femtomolar concentrations, which is exemplified by the label-free detection of the extracellular adherence protein (EAP) found on the outer surface of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which is believed to be a prostate cancer marker. These experiments pave the way towards an ultra-sensitive yet compact biodetection platform for point-of-care diagnostics applications.
