  • Detection of Combustion Properties in a Diesel Engine using Block Mounted Accelerometers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IFAC Proceedings Volumes (IFAC-PapersOnline). - : Elsevier BV. - 1474-6670. - 9783902823625 ; 19, s. 11866-11871
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Engine block mounted accelerometers was used for estimating combustion phasing parameters for a heavy duty diesel engine. Several sensor locations were evaluated for its sensitivity to combustion related vibrations and mechanical noise. One sensor-cylinder combination was selected for the evaluation of a simple algorithm to detect 10% and 50% burned mass fraction. The algorithm uses the accumulated accelerometer vibration energy as a base for extracting the 10% and 50% points respectively. The results show that the angular positions for 10% and 50% burned mass fraction can be estimated with precisions of 1.5 and 3 CAD respectively. It is also concluded that the early part of the accelerometer signal has a significant influence from a mechanical noise source related to the start of injection.

  • Evaluation of a Closed Loop Spark Advance Controller Based on a Torque Sensor
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Papers. - : SAE International. - 0148-7191 .- 2688-3627.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A closed loop spark advance control system was evaluated on a Volvo V70 5-cylinder spark ignited engine. The system utilises a crankshaft mounted torque sensor for combustion monitoring which provides individual cylinder combustion phasing information and enables individual cylinder spark advance control. The spark advance control system can compensate for changes in combustion operating conditions and hence limit the need for calibration. The spark advance control system was used in a mode of cylinder balancing where the control target is to keep the combustion phasing in all cylinders at a defined setpoint. This control law was evaluated in vehicle tests in an emission test chamber, running pre-defined driving cycles FTP72 and Highway Fuel Economy Test. Analysis shows that the combustion phasing was kept close to the selected setpoint during both tests and, hence, robustness in that sense was demonstrated. The torque ratio concept is used for combustion phasing monitoring based on crankshaft torque measurements. Analysis of the 50% torque ratio as a measure for combustion phasing shows that it is equivalent to 50% burned mass fraction.

  • The torque ratio concept for combustion monitoring of internal combustion engines
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Control Engineering Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 0967-0661. ; 20:6, s. 561-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work presents a method to analyze combustion events in an internal combustion engine, called the torque ratio concept. The method is based on crankshafttorque measurements, but an extension to angular speed measurements is possible. The torque ratio concept provides a parametrized model for the combustionprogress from which e.g. combustion phasing can be extracted. The torque ratio concept is derived mathematically and related theoretically to other combustionanalysis methods, such as pressure ratio and net heat release. Finally, analysis on recorded data from a five cylinder spark ignited engine verifies the relationships between the three methods. For combustion phasing, the 50% torque ratio is an equivalent measure to 50% pressure ratio and can be transformed into the 50% net heat release position by using a derived volume ratio function.

  • Battery parameter estimation from recorded fleet data
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Papers. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. - 0148-7191 .- 2688-3627. ; 2016-Octobeer
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method to identify battery parameters for a Li-ION hybrid battery model based on current and voltage measurements performed in a vehicle during 12 months of in use operation is investigated. This is different from previous work where a common approach is to use current pulse de-rating tests, HPPC, hybrid pulse-power capability, which uses predetermined amplitudes and frequencies of current pulses. Equivalent circuit linear models of different complexity were tested and evaluated in order to identify parameter dependencies at different state of charge levels and temperatures. The average accuracy of modelling the DC bus voltage provides a model goodness average higher than 75% for all analyzed individual log files. The models are used in order to estimate energy output from the battery and compared towards how the estimated voltage error propagates throughout a drive cycle. Both single RC equivalent circuit model and R-equivalent circuit model experienced goodness of fit at average 75 % and dual RC equivalent circuit model was less accurate with average 40 %.

  • Comparing Dynamic Programming Optimal Control Strategies for a Series Hybrid Drivetrain
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Papers. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. - 0148-7191 .- 2688-3627. ; 2017-October
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A two-state forward dynamic programming algorithm is evaluated in a series hybrid drive-train application with the objective to minimize fuel consumption when look-ahead information is available. The states in the new method are battery state-of-charge and engine speed. The new method is compared to one-state dynamic programming optimization methods where the requested generator power is found such that the fuel consumption is minimized and engine speed is given by the optimum power-speed efficiency line. The other method compared is to run the engine at a given operating point where the system efficiency is highest, finding the combination of engine run requests over the drive-cycle that minimizes the fuel consumption. The work has included the engine torque and generator power as control signals and is evaluated in a full vehicle-simulation model based on the Volvo Car Corporation VSIM tool. Lowest fuel consumption is obtained by the new two-state method, with 12 % less fuel consumed compared to operating the engine in the system efficiency sweet spot.
