  • Migrants in Swedish sexual and reproductive health and rights related policies : a critical discourse analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Equity in Health. - London : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1475-9276. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previous research has shown that migrants in Sweden are disadvantaged in terms of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). SRHR policies might play a crucial role in shaping migrants’ SRHR outcomes. The purpose of the study was to critically examine: a) how migrants were represented in the discourses embedded within Swedish SRHR-related policies, and b) how migrants’ SRHR-related issues were framed and addressed within these discourses. Methods: Critical discourse analysis (CDA) was used to analyze a total of 54 policy documents. Following Jäger’s approach to CDA, discourse strands and entanglements between different discourse strands were examined. Results: Our findings consisted of three discourse strands: 1) “Emphasizing vulnerability”, 2) “Constructing otherness”, and 3) “Prioritizing the structural level or the individual level?”. Migrants’ representation in Swedish SRHR-related policies is often associated with the concept of vulnerability, a concept that can hold negative connotations such as reinforcing social control, stigma, and disempowerment. Alongside the discourse of vulnerability, the discourse of otherness appears when framing migrants’ SRHR in relation to what is defined as honor-related violence and oppression. Furthermore, migrant SRHR issues are occasionally conceptualized as structural issues, as suggested by the human rights-based approach embraced by Swedish SRHR-related policies. Relevant structural factors, namely migration laws and regulations, are omitted when addressing, for example, human trafficking and HIV/AIDS.Conclusions: We conclude that the dominant discourses favor depictions of migrants as vulnerable and as the Other. Moreover, despite the prevailing human rights-based discourse, structural factors are not always considered when framing and addressing migrants’ SRHR issues. This paper calls for a critical analysis of the concept of vulnerability in relation to migrants’ SRHR. It also highlights the importance of avoiding othering and paying attention to the structural factors when addressing migrants’ SRHR. © 2022, The Author(s).

  • Navigating the Minefield : Women's Experiences of Abortion in a Country with a Conscience Clause - The Case of Croatia
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Women's Studies. - Bridgewater : Bridgewater State College. - 1539-8706. ; 22:1, s. 166-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many countries around the world have a conscience clause allowing physicians and health care providers to opt-out of performing abortions. This practice of conscientious objection to abortion care affects both healthcare providers and women's access to abortion care. In Croatia, a conscience clause was introduced in 2003. Nonetheless, women's experiences of abortion after the introduction have not been previously studied. The aim of our study was to explore women's experiences of abortion and conscientious objection in a country with a conscience clause. The study has a qualitative inductive and explorative design. We interviewed seven (7) women in Croatia with experience of an unwanted pregnancy or abortion and analyzed the interviews using thematic content analysis. Our findings revealed one overarching theme: ‘Navigating the minefield—women's experiences of abortion in a country with a conscience clause’ and three categories: ‘Experiencing abortion—to endure a vulnerable situation,’ ‘The conscientious objection in practice—causing obstacles and stigma,’ and ‘Views on abortion—socio-cultural and religious influence’. The women perceived the abortion decision as being difficult and expressed feelings of shame, guilt, and fears of being judged in line with the general attitude toward abortion in society. They described the conscientious objection as having consequences in public healthcare by limiting their access to abortion care and affecting treatment in terms of i.e. derogatory comments, limited or lacking information about the abortion procedure and/or absent contraceptive counseling post abortion. According to the women, a shift towards more conservative ideas towards abortion seem to have taken place in the Croatian society. The conscientious objection was believed to reinforce a moralizing view of sexuality, where the women’s decisions regarding abortion became a collective concern causing stigma and involuntary social alienation. The conscientious clause made the women feel they had to navigate a ‘minefield,’ where their dependency situation and vulnerability in the abortion situation were reinforced by social stigma. ©2021 Journal of International Women’s Studies.

  • ‘We need “culture-bridges” : professionals’ experiences of sex education for pupils with intellectual disabilities in a multicultural society
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sex Education. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 1468-1811 .- 1472-0825. ; 19:1, s. 54-67
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to explore how sex education in special schools in Sweden is influenced and challenged by the multicultural aspects of modern society. In particular, it sought to explore professionalls' experiences of sex education and of honour-related experiences among young people with intellectual disabilities. Data from five individual interviews and one focus groups with four professionals were thematically analysed using sexual scripts as a theoretical framework. The results reveal an ambivalent honour-related script geared toward pupils with intellectual disabilities from cultural backgrounds differing from those of the Swedish mainstream. The provision of sex education, including information about honour-related experiences, is especially important because of these young people’s vulnerability; however, addressing the subject effectively is sensitive and complicated. Colleagues with different cultural backgrounds can act as ‘culture bridges’ for professionals who lack strategies, methods and materials. Increasing professionals’ prerequisite qualifications (e.g. further education, supervision) and adopting autonomy-promoted conduct can empower pupils with intellectual disability to exercise autonomy over their sexuality outside their immediate cultural context. © 2018 The Author(s). • "Den verkliga kulturkonflikten"? Islamisk sexualmoralism i liberala Sverige
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift. - Växjö : FORSA (Förbundet för forskning i socialt arbete). - 1104-1420 .- 2003-5624. ; 16:3-4, s. 350-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses the suggestion that the true clash between Western and Islamic civilizations is in the field of sexuality. Islamic morals and values regarding sex are elaborated on the basis of Islamic sources and related to the context of Swedish sexual liberalism. What conflicts can be found in questions regarding how to meet a partner for sex and/or marriage, who can be chosen as a partner, and the forced, arranged and early marriages? The sexual rights of the husband and the sexual duities of the wife are problematized. The article critically discusses the Islamic view of forbidden sexual relations and behaviour. The different understandings of sexuality are articulated in social problems such as honour-related violence, individual feelings of shame, objections to sex education in Swedish schools and the sexualization of children.
