  • La Pudeur en Crise. Un aspect de l’accueil d’A la recherche du temps perdu de Marcel Proust (1913-1930) : Modesty in Crisis. An Aspect of the Critical Reception of Marcel Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu (1913-1930)
  • 1983
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study describes the moral debate which came about as a result of the publication of A la recherche du temps perdu in France. On several occasions, Marcel Proust himself suggested that this was a « highly indecent » work. It is the intent of this study to show what his contemporaries thought of the moral aspect of A la recherche. The material for the study has been collected through a systematic examination of what was written about Proust and his work in the French press between 1913 and 1930. Contents. The introduction contains a brief survey of earlier studies on the critical reactions to Proust’s work. Each of the five chapters corresponds to a specific stage in the moral debate concerning A la recherche. Chapter One is devoted to the reception given the work before the publication of Sodome et Gomorrhe, when Proust was generally thought of as a writer portraying life and manners in the tradition of the French 17th Century moralists. It was only after the publication of Sodome et Gomorrhe that the critics started to attack Proust from a moral point of view because of the open way in which he approached the subject of homosexuality. This is dealt with in Chapter Two. The third chapter is an account of the articles written about Proust immediately after his death in November of 1922. A number of critics were then of the opinion that Proust had taken a position neither for, nor against, the characters of his work, and that he therefore had omitted an important moral and spiritual dimension in A la recherche. From this period on, the debate concerning Proust’s work became a part of the general debate concerning literature and morality. Chapter Four describes the reception given to the posthumously published volumes La Prisonnière and Albertine disparue. The last chapter deals with the reception of Le Temps retrouvé and the first attempts at a critique of the entire work. The last volume caused many critics to reassess their former opinion of A la recherche, since this volume, in their eyes, added the dimension which they previously considered to be missing. However, the critics remained divided: In 1930, one group thought of Proust as a moralist who had described his times objectively, while another saw him as a subjective and amoral author who had rendered in his books the neurotic individual’s view of his surroundings. The bibliographical part of the study lists a number of books and articles published between 1913 and 1930 which have not been mentioned in earlier Proust bibliographies.

  • L'auto-reformulation corrective: une stratégie dans la production orale de FLE
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to observe how Swedish learners of French monitor their speech output when confronted with a linguistic problem. The study is based on empirical data consisting of recorded interviews and tasks made with first year university students.L1 speech production is often interrupted by hesitations revealed through a variety of phenomena ranging from silent pauses to comments. Most of these interruptions are caused by the action of a control system, a “monitor” which checks our speech internally while it is produced or after the production has reached the articulation level. Speech is checked against an internal model of lexical and grammatical correctness. If the demands of the monitor are not met, a reparation may take place so that the speaker’s production eventually reaches the expected level of correctness. In the same way, the speech of L2 learners is controlled during and after production. The pattern of work of the monitor is much the same as for the L1, but the reparation is not necessarily conducted in a similar way because the learner’s internal grammar and lexicon are not complete and cannot be consulted as quickly as the L1 lexicon and grammar. L2 learners rely on a certain amount of acquired knowledge but they also need to be given time to refer to learned rules and patterns since the retrieval of these has not yet been made automatic. In this study, we observe the speech production of Swedish students learning French during the first semester of their academic studies. The recasts students make when trying to reach a correct solution to a linguistic problem are in focus. We can see a step-by-step process through which the speakers elaborates their production by putting forward hypotheses, each one usually containing a small modification, and try to reach an acceptable solution. In some cases we can see that the speaker might choose to focus on the communicative aspects instead of focusing on the formal correctness of the speech. On the background of L1 and L2 acquisition theories, this study focuses on two areas of difficulty for the Swedish learner: the production of –ment adverbs and the production of conjugated verbs.

  • Violence gratuite et adolescents-bourreaux : Réception, traduction et enjeux de deux romans suédois pour adolescents, en France, au début des années 2000
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of Swedish literature for adolescents in the French literary scene in the early 2000s. The sociology of literature constitutes the main theoretical framework of this thesis.Drawing from examples that broach the sensitive topic of "unprovoked violence" as it is treated in two Swedish novels for teenagers, Spelar död [Play Death] by Stefan Casta and När tågen går förbi (Train Wreck) by Malin Lindroth, this thesis shows how these novels are innovative in Even-Zohar’s sense of the term, as addressed in his Polysystem Theory (1990). By introducing "unprovoked violence" and violent teenagers via a realistic genre, such works filled a vacuum in the French system and injected a new dynamic into it. This dynamic makes it possible for new literary models to be introduced in the system and to change the standards of that system. The analyses of the French and Swedish receptions of the two novels mentioned above show that they gave rise to a moral panic in France, which is not an unusual thing to happen in periods of ongoing change. This also clarifies the differences in norms between the two systems. The French system tends to reject dark topics, while the Swedish wishes to discuss them. The investigations of the translations of unprovoked violence show that adherence to Swedish norms determine the translation’s adequacy (Toury), which may be part of the reason for the stormy reception the two works received in France, and their undergoing censure. The position of translators and publishers in the literary system also plays a major role for a translated text not being censured during the transfer from one system to another.Even if the Swedish titles translated into French are few, this thesis shows that the impact of Swedish literature on adolescents in France is certain. By introducing new and sensitive topics, such novels could be early markers of an evolution of the French field of literature for adolescents.

  • Equivalence et saillance dans l'expression de la localisation frontale dynamique en suédois et en français : Etude comparative et contrastive de fram et de (s’)avancer/en avant
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study deals with the expression of frontal orientation in dynamic contexts as lexicalised in the Swedish particle fram and its French equivalents (s')avancer/en avant. The study is based on a parallel corpus containing approximately one millon words of Swedish and one million words of French fiction and it consists of a comparison made on the basis of monolingual and crosslinguistic data. The study links with current trends in both cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics. The aim of the study is twofold : first it sets out to measure to what extent these forms express the same type of orientations and to what extent they do use these in domains other than the spatial one; second it sets out to measure to what extent these forms are used as translational equivalents as well as to list the other types of translational equivalents that occur in the corpus. This is done in order to evaluate the salience of the concept of frontal orientation in the both languages compared and to get a view of other types of conceptualizations that underlie the linguistic expression of the other language when the Swedish and the French texts do not make the same use of the expression of frontal orientation.

  • « C'est ça, en fait. » Développer l'idiomaticité dans une L2 pendant un séjour linguistique : Trois études sur le rôle des différences individuelles
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with the development of idiomaticity in French as a second language (L2). Idiomaticity in this context refers to knowledge and use of multiword expressions (MWEs), such as for example c'est ça and en fait. Developing idiomaticity is an important yet challenging aspect of L2 learning, and requires substantial exposure to the target language (TL). This makes the study abroad learning context ideal. However, research shows that learners vary considerably with respect to their linguistic development during their stay abroad. The aim of this thesis is to investigate what factors promote the development of idiomaticity in L2 French during a semester abroad. The thesis comprises three studies which are informed by usage-based approaches to language learning and individual difference research, and which include a total of 43 participants. Study I quantitatively investigates the role of quantity of TL contact for the learning of MWEs used in informal conversations. The results show that quantity of TL contact during the stay abroad did not predict the development of MWE knowledge. Study II qualitatively explores what kind of TL contact and what psychological orientation (a constellation of psychological factors) might promote MWE learning by focusing on contrasting cases of learners from Study I. The findings suggest that a relatively varied contact with the TL in combination with a favorable psychological orientation promoted MWE learning, including a self-reported tendency to notice language forms, a strong L2 motivation, a sense of self-efficacy and self-regulatory capabilities. Study III explores the role of social networks for the development of idiomaticity in spoken L2 French. It is found that the learner's repertoire of MWEs was promoted by a social network including several relationships sustained in the TL. Overall, the findings suggest that a relatively varied TL contact in combination with a favorable psychological orientation and/or a social network including TL speakers promote the development of L2 idiomaticity during the semester abroad. In other words, mere exposure to the TL does not seem to be enough to develop idiomaticity. This thesis contributes to SA research on L2 learning and can hopefully be of use to future SA participants who want to develop their knowledge and use of MWEs which are key to successful communication in an L2.
