    • E-Learning Bulgarian at Uppsala University: A Survival Strategy or the Natural Habitat for Students of the 21st Century? Teaching Bulgarian at university level trough e-learning is still a novelty. However, from the fall semester of 2011, it will be the only alternative to study the subject in Sweden. The article presents the structure and the methodological principles behind the development of a sequence of courses in Bulgarian (from basic to advanced level) at Uppsala University. It is argued that the advantages of on-line teaching outweigh the disadvantages, and that e-learning involves the students in the process of learning to a much higher extent than traditional on-campus teaching. The new courses are presented from two different perspectives: the educator’s and the student’. Some experiences on working with the e-learning platform PingPong, and the conferencing program Abobe Connect Pro, are discussed.

    • Earthquakes manifested in a small volume of the earth's crust are analysed, presuming that the orientation of the rupture disturbances is conditioned by the local neotectonic conditions. A relation is sought between the seismic manifestations and the modern crushing structures in the earthquake region. In this very case, the earthquakes in the Velingrad district (Bulgaria) are analysed, which began with an earthquake of the 5,3 magnitude and a maximum intensity of the VII-VIII degree by the Medvedev-Schponheuer- Karnik scale and the followed 504 earthquakes for a period of 179 days. From the data obtained, a presence of a complex ridge-like structure can be presumed, which develops in a valley depression on the background of a vault block rising in the limits of the granite layer of the earth crust, to a 15 km depth. The frequency of the earthquakes is obtained as a function of the difference (tsg - tpg) and the greatest earthquake frequency is shown to be in the interval of 0,8-1,4 sec and the greatest difference of times corresponds to a 20 km hypocentral distance

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Fragment of the Alexander Romance and of the Narrative on the Four Large Seas in a Prayer book and an Account of Virgin’s Miracles from the 18th Century (MS 61 from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Library) The paper identifies a fragment from the Alexander Romance and the Narrative on the Four Large Seas copied on the front flyleaf of manuscript no.61 from the Archives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (cf. Kodov 1969: 103–104). The codex contains Prayer book and an Account of Virgin’s Miracles. The article offers the first ever publication of this fragment. It identifies two different parts in the fragment: O velikom ostrově o provan(s)ko(m), taken from the Chronograph redaction of the Alexander Romance, and O četirech˝ velikoch˝ morjach˝ belonging to another part of the same Chronograph. These two excerpts have been checked against the extant Chronographs as well as against the only Russian Chronograph copy kept in Bulgaria, No. 774 from the National Library in Sofia. The comparisons lead to the conclusion that the text on the flyleaf stands closest to the Russian Chronograph of 1512. The paper proves that these two parts are indeed two excerpts deliberately selected and copied on the flyleaf, and are not a fragment taken from another codex and reused in the binding of the eighteenth-century Prayer book. It is further established that Chronograph no. 774 is not the source of these excerpts, since the text of ms no.774 derives from the Chronograph of 1617.

  • On The Golden Chain and the Degrees of Consanguinity : За Златната верига и за Степените на брака
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Starobulgarska Literatura. Journal for Medieval Bulgarian Literature and Culture. - 0204-868X .- 2535-0919. ; :63–64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 14th c. Bulgarian compilation Golden Chain contains versions of texts from five centuries. This paper identifies the text of units 320–340 in the Golden Chain as a faithful translation from the Syntagma of Matthew Blastares, the Greek text of which is dated to 1335: it is an excerpt from its section 2 (Β), chapter 8 (Η), on the degrees of consanguinity and affinity and forbidden and permitted marriages. The excerpt covers in full roughly the first half of chapter 8, leaving out the second half devoted to marriages among three lineages. The text is presented in a lineated collation of the Greek source text with two copies of the Slavonic translation which are shown to be transcriptions of one antigraph written in Glagolitic. It is the first reliable example of transcription Cyrillic → Glagolitic (the closed tradition of the translation of the Syntagma shows no trace of Glagolitic). Why such intervention was imposed cannot as yet be explained.

Идентификация на текста : Manuscripts of the Alexander Romance (Alexandria) in the National Library “Ivan Vazov” in Plovdiv. Identification of the text.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: R´ci slovo tvrdí´´do. - Sofia : St. Kliment Ohridski University Press. - 9789540756257
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on codex no. 163 from The National Library “Ivan Vazov” in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. This manuscript, dated to 1836, and previously not included in any publications on the Alexander romance, is a text witness to a Bulgarian vernacular translation of the Romanian Alexander romance. Based on the results provided by а text critical analysis, the author concludes that manuscript no. 163 belongs to the first vernacular Bulgarian translation of the Romanian Alexander romance. In addition, the results of the text critical analysis demonstrate that this manuscript (no. 163) is not a copy of manuscript no. IX F 36 from The Czech National Museum (Národní Muzeum, Prague), which is a known text witness to the first translation of the Romanian Alexander romance to vernacular Bulgarian. The comparison between these two manuscripts also shows that manuscript no. 163 is not a direct copy of the protograph of this translation. There must have existed a previously unknown copy (β) of the protograph, written between 1810 and 1825, that must have been the apograph of both the Prague manuscript and the Plovdiv manuscript (no. 163).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article provides an overview of Slavic studies in the Nordic countries. It presents the organizations of Slavists and the variety of publication series that are issued within the Slavic scientific field. The text describes the reor- ganization of departments for Slavic languages and highlights advantages and disadvantages in this development that prevails at Swedish universities in the last decade. The importance of the rich collections of manuscripts and early printed books at Swedish libraries and archives for international research is emphasized. The article also focuses on medieval Slavic studies in Sweden and more specifically at the University of Gothenburg. The spe- cific interdisciplinary environment for medieval studies at the University of Gothenburg is further discussed in the article. Even in education, the University of Gothenburg excels with its complete study programs at un- dergraduate and advanced level in medieval Slavic studies and Old Church Slavonic. Towards the end of the article, book collections and their connection to people who have contributed to Slavic studies at the University of Gothenburg are discussed.
