  • Monitoring the magnetar SGR 1935+2154 with the MAGIC telescopes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; 395
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 was associated with a bright, millisecond-timescale fast radio burst (FRB) which occured in April 2020, during a flaring episode. This was the first time an FRB was unequivocally associated with a Galactic source, and the first FRB for which the nature of the emitting source was identified. Moreover, it was the first FRB with a counterpart at another wavelength correlated in time, an atypical, hard X-ray burst, which provides clear evidence for accompanying non-thermal processes. The MAGIC Telescopes are Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) sensitive to very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma rays. Located at the center of the camera lies the MAGIC Central pixel, a single fully-modified photosensor-toreadout chain to measure millisecond-duration optical signals, displaying a maximum sensitivity at a wavelength of 350 nm. This allows MAGIC to operate simultaneously both as a VHE gammaray and a fast optical telescope. The MAGIC telescopes have monitored SGR 1935+2154 in a multiwavelength campaign involving X-ray, radio and optical facilities. In this contribution, we will show the results on the search for the VHE counterpart of the first SGR-FRB source in this multiwavelength context, as well as the search for fast optical bursts with the MAGIC Central Pixel.

  • Evolution of Nanoparticle Composition in CLOUD in Presence of Sulphuric Acid, Ammonia and Organics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NUCLEATION AND ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOLS. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 9780735411524 ; , s. 291-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we investigate the composition of nucleated nanoparticles formed from sulphuric acid, ammonia, amines, and oxidised organics in the CLOUD chamber experiments at CERN. The investigation is carried out via analysis of the particle hygroscopicity (size range of 15-63 nm), ethanol affinity (15-50nm), oxidation state (<50 nm), and ion composition (few nanometers). The organic volume fraction of particles increased with an increase in particle diameter in presence of the sulphuric acid, ammonia and organics. Vice versa, the sulphuric acid volume fraction decreased when the particle diameter increased. The results provide information on the size-dependent composition of nucleated aerosol particles.

  • The VASCO project : 100 red transients and their follow up
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronautical Congress, IAC. - : International Astronautical Federation, IAF.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Vanishing & Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project investigates astronomical surveys spanning a 70 years time interval, searching for unusual and exotic transients. We present herein the VASCO Citizen Science Project, that uses three different approaches to the identification of unusual transients in a given set of candidates: hypothesis-driven, exploratory-driven and machine learning-driven (which is of particular benefit for SETI searches). To address the big data challenge, VASCO combines methods from the Virtual Observatory, a user-aided machine learning and visual inspection through citizen science. In this article, we demonstrate the citizen science project, the new and improved candidate selection process and give a progress report. We also present the VASCO citizen science network led by amateur astronomy associations mainly located in Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria. At the moment of writing, the citizen science project has carefully examined 12,000 candidate image pairs in the data, and has so far identified 713 objects classified as “vanished”. The most interesting candidates will be followed up with optical and infrared imaging, together with the observations by the most potent radio telescopes.

  • What’s at issue : Sex, stigma, and politics in ACM publishing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceeding CHI EA '18 Extended Abstracts of the 2018 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450356206 - 9781450356213
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Because publishing with the ACM is essentially required to advance our careers, we must examine its practices critically and constructively. To this end, we reflect on our experience working with the ACM student publication Crossroads. We encountered rigid content limitations related to sex and sexuality, preventing some contributors from foregrounding their connection to political activism, and others from publishing altogether. We explore the underlying institutional and sociopolitical problems and propose starting points for future action, including developing a transparent content approval policy and new organizations for politically-engaged computing researchers, all of which should center the leadership of marginalized individuals.

  • Soft real-time traffic communication in loaded Wireless Mesh Networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems - Proceedings, WFCS. - 9781509023394
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial applications have been shifting towards wireless multi-hop networks in recent years due to their lower cost of deployment and reconfiguration compared with their wired counterparts. These wireless networks usually must support real-time communication to meet the application requirements. For this reason, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are potential candidates for industrial applications as they support a fixed infrastructure of static nodes for relaying packets. To meet the application demands, we modify the wireless chain network protocol (WICKPro) to support soft real-time traffic in WMNs with chain topologies over IEEE 802.11. We employ tele-operation of mobile robots as our case study, and perform extensive simulation and laboratory experiments. We show that the data delivery ratio is increased up to 42% in a scenario with 7 nodes, when the maximum end-to-end delay tolerated by the application is doubled. This is particularly suited to soft real-time applications that can trade longer delays by higher reliability. Moreover, when compared with a distributed priority-based token-passing protocol (RT-WMP), the lower overhead of WICKPro allows, in an error-free scenario, obtaining a throughput improvement of 33.42% on average.
