  • TMD Pain, Physical, and Emotional Functioning Related to Headache Frequency
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Temporormandibular disorders (TMD) and tension-type headaches (TTHA) share many signs and symptom and several studies have demonstrated an overlap between these conditions. Objectives: This study investigated the relationship of headache frequency with patient-reported TMD pain intensity, physical functioning, and emotional functioning in subjects with TTHA attributed to TMD. Methods: The RDC/TMD Validation Project, as a subset of 633 TMD cases, identified 153 subjects with concurrent TMD pain diagnoses (RDC/TMD myofascial pain or TMJ arthralgia) and TTHA (International Classification of Headache Disorders-II / ICHD-II) presenting in the temporal region. These subjects also demonstrated pain similar to their headache on provocation by palpation of the temporalis muscle. The headache diagnoses were sub-divided into infrequent episodic, frequent episodic, and chronic TTHA according to the ICHD-II. Outcomes of the study were self-report measures of jaw pain intensity (average pain intensity), physical functioning (Jaw Function Limitation Scale/JFLS, Ohrbach et al, 2008; Graded Chronic Pain Scale/GCPS, von Korff et al, 1992; Short Form -12/SF-12, Ware et al, 1996) and emotional functioning (depression, somatization, anxiety as measured by the Symptom Checklist-90/SCL-90). Differences in outcomes among the three headache subgroups were investigated using ANOVA. Results: Pain intensity in the temple and jaw regions was significantly associated with increased frequency of headache (p<0.01). Physical functioning as assessed with the JFLS (p<0.05) and the GCPS (p<0.01) were also significantly associated with headache frequency. Emotional functioning as assessed with the SCL-90 in terms of depression, somatization, and anxiety were all associated with frequency of headache (p<0.05). In general, the more frequent a subject's TTHA the more severe the levels of outcome. Conclusion: TMD pain intensity, physical functioning, and emotional functioning were associated with the frequency of TMD-related tension-type headache.

  • Analysis of Best High Rate Convolutional Codes for Faster than Nyquist Turbo Equalization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT). ; , s. 1987-1991
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We find good rate 2/3 and 3/4 convolutional codes for use with iterative decoding (turbo equalization) of coded intersymbol interference with AWGN. The method is based on the input-output bit error rate characteristic of the convolutional BCJR decoder module. An analysis leads to an equivalent minimum distance under the required intrinsic subtraction, which depends on free distance and an input-output LLR correlation parameter.

  • Best Rate 1/2 Convolutional Codes for Turbo Equalization with Severe ISI
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Proceedings (ISIT). - 9781467325806 ; , s. 2366-2370
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give a procedure to find good convolutional codes for use with iterative decoding (turbo equalization) of the coded AWGN intersymbol interference (ISI) channel. The method is based on the input-output bit error rate characteristic of the convolutional BCJR module in the iterative decoder, in combination with the code minimum distance. Both are essential to find best codes. Best feedforward and recursive systematic codes are listed for memories 2-4, and some individual good codes at memory 5. Codes are tested over a root raised-cosine faster than Nyquist channel with severe ISI. Turbo BER performance reaches 0.8-1.6 dB from capacity with a 4-16 state codes. Feedforward codes perform better than recursive systematic.

  • Coded modulation by outright filtering
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2002 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (Cat. No.02CH37371). - 0780375017 ; , s. 471-471
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the bandwidth and distance of codes created by ordinary lowpass filtering of a pulse stream. The encoder is thus a convolution, but over the reals. Performance of these codes is compared to the TCM and PRS code families; despite their simplicity, the new codes perform equally well. Since a simple decoder exists, these are attractive codes.

  • Geomorphic expression of collapsing ice streams revealed by latest generation swath bathymetry images
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is now a substantial swath bathymetry data set from Antarctica that reveals subglacial bedforms, in particular mega-scale glacial lineations, which were formed by ice streams that occupied glacial troughs during the LGM. However, with the exception of grounding zone wedges, few studies have yielded high-resolution sea floor images that show geomorphic features formed by retreating ice streams. For example, deep-tow side-scan sonar records from Ross Sea show a range of recessional features, mostly 1-3 meters high, that overprint mega-scale glacial lineations. These features were not imaged in swath bathymetry records. During the 2010 austral summer, the Swedish ice breaker Oden was used to conduct an extensive survey in the sparsely studied central trough in Pine Island Bay using the latest generation multibeam technology. The bedforms imaged in Pine Island Bay are similar to small-scale recessional features previously imaged in Ross Sea using deep-tow side-scan sonar. These include fishbone moraines and corrugated iceberg furrows, which we argue were produced daily through tidally-influenced motion of a disintegrating ice shelf. During this event a 65 km long stretch of the trough was cleared of floating ice in about 1.5 years. The break-up occurred ~12,000 cal ka BP and was likely a response to rapid sea-level rise at that time. Acquisition of more high-resolution swath bathymetry data should greatly increase our understanding of ice stream interaction with the seafloor and those factors that have influenced ice stream behavior during retreat. Future work should focus on the rugged inner shelf, were subglacial meltwater is believed to have contributed to ice stream instability.

  • New reduced state space BCJR algorithms for the ISI channel
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings, International Symp. on Information Theory. - 9781424443130 ; , s. 889-893
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A critical component in detection under intersymbol interference (ISI) and in turbo equalization is the BCJR algorithm. We study two approaches to reducing its computation. First, the state space is reduced by optimizing the receiver's phase-maximizing all pass filter. Then the state space used by the BCJR calculation is reduced by breaking the state into an offset and a main state. These procedures are demonstrated by ISI detection and turbo equalization over strongly bandlimited channels.

  • New Trellis source codes based on linear congruential recursions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proc., 2003 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, Yokohama. - 0780377281 ; , s. 170-170
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We evaluate a new class of rate-distortion codes based on simple linear congruential recursions. Codes are demonstrated for the uniform and Gaussian sources, whose performance exceeds that so far reported in the literature, including that reported for TCQ codes. The results also point to a new correlation relationship that apparently must exist for trellis codes.

  • On the BCJR algorithm for rate-distortion source coding
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory - Proceedings. ; 2005, s. 1932-1936
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The BCJR algorithm is an important method of channel decoding. We extend it here to rate-distortion encoding. The arguments begin from source coding principles and make no use of channel coding or soft output ideas. An important role is played by codeword ensembles with equiprobable reproducer letters. The BCJR method is demonstrated by tests of a tailbiting BCJR with the Gaussian source. The outcome improves Viterbi algorithm performance at short and medium blocklengths.
