  • Highly efficient UV detection in a metal-semiconductor-metal detector with epigraphene
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics Inc.. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 120:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (epigraphene) grown at high temperatures (T >1850 °C) readily acts as material for implementing solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) detectors with outstanding performance. We present centimeter-sized epigraphene metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) detectors with a peak external quantum efficiency of η ∼85% for wavelengths λ = 250-280 nm, corresponding to nearly 100% internal quantum efficiency when accounting for reflection losses. Zero bias operation is possible in asymmetric devices, with the responsivity to UV remaining as high as R = 134 mA/W, making this a self-powered detector. The low dark currents Io ∼50 fA translate into an estimated record high specific detectivity D = 3.5 × 1015 Jones. The performance that we demonstrate, together with material reproducibility, renders epigraphene technologically attractive to implement high-performance planar MSM devices with a low processing effort, including multi-pixel UV sensor arrays, suitable for a number of practical applications. © 2022 Author(s).

  • Hot spot formation in electron-doped PCCO nanobridges
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 94:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the transport properties of optimally doped Pr2-xCexCuO4-δ (PCCO) nanobridges with width down to 100 nm. The critical current density of the nanobridges approaches the Ginzburg-Landau theoretical limit, which demonstrates nanostructures with properties close to the as-grown films. The current voltage characteristics are hysteretic with a sharp voltage switch, of the order of a few millivolts, that we interpret with the occurrence of a hot spot formation. The values of the retrapping current and the voltage switch obtained by modeling the heat transport in the nanobridges are very close to the experimental ones. This feature, together with the extremely short recombination times, make PCCO nanostructures attractive candidates for ultrafast single photon detectors.

  • Catalyst-free vapour-solid technique for deposition of Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 nanowires/nanobelts with topological insulator properties
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3372 .- 2040-3364. ; 7:38, s. 15935-15944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a simple two-stage vapour-solid synthesis method for the growth of bismuth chalcogenide (Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3) topological insulator nanowires/nanobelts by using Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 powders as source materials. During the first stage of the synthesis process nanoplateteles, serving as "catalysts" for further nanowire/nanobelt growth, are formed. At a second stage of the synthesis, the introduction of a N-2 flow at 35 Torr pressure in the chamber induces the formation of free standing nanowires/nanobelts. The synthesised nanostructures demonstrate a layered single-crystalline structure and Bi : Se and Bi : Te ratios 40 : 60 at% for both Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 nanowires/nanobelts. The presence of Shubnikov de Haas oscillations in the longitudinal magneto-resistance of the nanowires/nanobelts and their specific angular dependence confirms the existence of 2D topological surface states in the synthesised nanostructures.

  • Ultralow 1/f noise in epigraphene devices
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics Inc.. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 124:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the lowest recorded levels of 1/ f noise for graphene-based devices, at the level of S V / V 2 = S I / I 2 = 4.4 × 10 − 16 (1/Hz), measured at f = 10 Hz ( S V / V 2 = S I / I 2 < 10 − 16 1/Hz for f > 100 Hz) in large-area epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (epigraphene) Hall sensors. This performance is made possible through the combination of high material quality, low contact resistance achieved by edge contact fabrication process, homogeneous doping, and stable passivation of the graphene layer. Our study explores the nature of 1/ f noise as a function of carrier density and device geometry and includes data from Hall sensors with device area range spanning over six orders of magnitude, with characteristic device length ranging from L = 1 μm to 1 mm. In optimized graphene Hall sensors, we demonstrate arrays to be a viable route to improve further the magnetic field detection: a simple parallel connection of two devices displays record-high magnetic field sensitivity at room temperature, with minimum detectable magnetic field levels down to B min = 9.5 nT/√Hz. The remarkable low levels of 1/ f noise observed in epigraphene devices hold immense capacity for the design and fabrication of scalable epigraphene-based sensors with exceptional performance. © 2024 Author(s).

  • High transparency Bi 2 Se 3 topological insulator nanoribbon Josephson junctions with low resistive noise properties
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 115:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bi2Se3 nanoribbons, grown by catalyst-free Physical Vapor Deposition, have been used to fabricate high quality Josephson junctions with Al superconducting electrodes. The conductance spectra (dI/dV) of the junctions show clear dip-peak structures characteristic of multiple Andreev reflections. The temperature dependence of the dip-peak features reveals a highly transparent Al/Bi2Se3 topological insulator nanoribbon interface and Josephson junction barrier. This is supported by the high values of the Bi2Se3 induced gap and of IcRn (where Ic is the critical current and Rn is the normal resistance of the junction) product both of the order of 160 μeV, a value close to the Al gap. The devices present an extremely low relative resistance noise below 1 × 10-12 μm2/Hz comparable to the best Al tunnel junctions, which indicates a high stability in the transmission coefficients of transport channels. The ideal Al/Bi2Se3 interface properties, perfect transparency for Cooper pair transport in conjunction with low resistive noise, make these junctions a suitable platform for further studies of the induced topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states physics.

  • Grooved Dayem Nanobridges as Building Blocks of High-Performance YBa2Cu3O7−δ SQUID Magnetometers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 19:3, s. 1902-1907
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present noise measurements performed on a YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ nanoscale weak-link-based magnetometer consisting of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) galvanically coupled to a 3.5 × 3.5 mm 2 pick-up loop, reaching white flux noise levels and magnetic noise levels as low as 6μÎ0/Hz and 100 fT/Hz at T = 77 K, respectively. The low noise is achieved by introducing grooved Dayem bridges (GDBs), a new concept of a weak link. A fabrication technique has been developed for the realization of nanoscale grooved bridges, which substitutes standard Dayem bridge weak links. The introduction of these novel key blocks reduces the parasitic inductance of the weak links and increases the differential resistance of the SQUIDs. This greatly improves the device performance, thus resulting in a reduction of the white noise.

  • SQUID magnetometer based on Grooved Dayem nanobridges and a flux transformer
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ISEC 2019 - International Superconductive Electronics Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report noise measurements performed on a SQUID magnetometer implementing Grooved Dayem nanobridge of YBCO as weak-links. The SQUID shows magnetic flux noise as low as 10μΦ 0}/Hz0.5. The magnetometer is realized by coupling the SQUID to a flux transformer with a two-level coupling scheme using a flip-chip approach. This improves the effective area of the SQUID and result in a magnetic field noise of 50fT/Hz0.5atT=77K.

  • Resistive state triggered by vortex entry in YBa2Cu3O7-delta nanostructures
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534. ; 506, s. 165-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have realized YBa2Cu3O7-delta nanowires and nano Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (nanoSQUID). The measured temperature dependence of the wire resistances below the superconducting transition temperature has been analyzed using a thermally activated vortex entry model valid for wires wider than the superconducting coherence length. The extracted zero temperature values of the London penetration depth, lambda(0) similar or equal to 270 +/- 15 nm, are in good agreement with the value obtained from critical current modulations as a function of an externally applied magnetic field in a nanoSQUID implementing two nanowires.

  • Toward ultra high magnetic field sensitivity YBa2Cu3O7 - δ nanowire based superconducting quantum interference devices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 119:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on measurements of YBa2Cu3O7- ? nanowire based Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (nanoSQUIDs) directly coupled to an in-plane pick-up loop. The pick-up loop, which is coupled predominantly via kinetic inductance to the SQUID loop, allows for a significant increase of the effective area of our devices. Its role is systematically investigated and the increase in the effective area is successfully compared with numerical simulations. Large effective areas, together with the ultra low white flux noise below 1 ? ? 0 / Hz, make our nanoSQUIDs very attractive as magnetic field sensors.

  • Fabricating Nanogaps in YBa2Cu3O7-delta for Hybrid Proximity-Based Josephson Junctions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advances of nanotechnologies applied to high-critical-temperature superconductors (HTSs) have recently given a huge boost to the field, opening new prospectives for their integration in hybrid devices. The feasibility of this research goes through the realization of HTS nanogaps with superconductive properties close to the as-grown bulk material at the nanoscale. Here we present a fabrication approach allowing the realization of YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) nanogaps with dimensions as small as 35 nm. To assess the quality of the nanogaps, we measure, before and after an ozone treatment, the current-voltage characteristics and the resistance versus temperature of YBCO nanowires with various widths and lengths, fabricated by using different lithographic processes. The analysis of the superconducting transition with a thermally activated vortex-entry model allows us to determine the maximum damage the nanowires undergo during the patterning which relates to the upper bound for the dimension of the nanogap. We find that the effective width of the nanogap is of the order of 100 nm at the superconducting transition temperature while retaining the geometrical value of about 35 nm at lower temperatures. The feasibility of the nanogaps for hybrid Josephson devices is demonstrated by bridging them with thin Au films. We detect a Josephson coupling up to 85 K with an almost ideal magnetic-field response of the Josephson current. These results pave the way for the realization of complex hybrid devices, where tiny HTS nanogaps can be instrumental to study the Josephson effect through barriers such as topological insulators or graphene.
