  • Hot spot formation in electron-doped PCCO nanobridges
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 94:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the transport properties of optimally doped Pr2-xCexCuO4-δ (PCCO) nanobridges with width down to 100 nm. The critical current density of the nanobridges approaches the Ginzburg-Landau theoretical limit, which demonstrates nanostructures with properties close to the as-grown films. The current voltage characteristics are hysteretic with a sharp voltage switch, of the order of a few millivolts, that we interpret with the occurrence of a hot spot formation. The values of the retrapping current and the voltage switch obtained by modeling the heat transport in the nanobridges are very close to the experimental ones. This feature, together with the extremely short recombination times, make PCCO nanostructures attractive candidates for ultrafast single photon detectors.

  • Fabrication and electrical transport characterization of high quality underdoped YBa2Cu3O7-δ nanowires
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Superconductor Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-2048 .- 1361-6668. ; 33:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the fabrication and electrical transport characterization of underdoped YBa2Cu3O7-δnanowires. The nanowires have been realized without any protective capping layer and theyshow transport properties similar to those of the parent thin film, demonstrating that they havenot been damaged by the nanopatterning. The current-voltage characteristics of the underdopednanowires show large hysteretic voltage switching at the critical current, in contrast to theflux-flow like characteristics of optimally doped nanostructures, indicating the formation of aself-stabilizing hot spot. These results open up new possibilities for using the underdopednanowires as single photon detectors and for exploring the underdoped side of the YBa2Cu3O7-δphase diagram at the nanoscale.

  • High-temperature superconducting nanowires for photon detection
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534. ; 509, s. 16-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possible use of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) for realizing superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors is a challenging, but also promising, aim because of their ultrafast electron relaxation times and high operating temperatures. The state-of-the-art HTS nanowires with a 50-nm thickness and widths down to 130 nm have been fabricated and tested under a 1550-nm wavelength laser irradiation. Experimental results presenting both the amplitude and rise times of the photoresponse signals as a function of the normalized detector bias current, measured in a wide temperature range, are discussed. The presence of two distinct regimes in the photoresponse temperature dependence is clearly evidenced, indicating that there are two different response mechanisms responsible for the HTS photoresponse mechanisms.

  • Highly homogeneous YBCO/LSMO nanowires for photoresponse experiments
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Superconductor Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-2048 .- 1361-6668. ; 27:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using nanolithography and a soft etching procedure, we have realized YBa2Cu3O7-x/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (YBCO/LSMO) nanowires, with cross sections down to 100 x 50 nm(2) that ensure the cover age of areas up to 10 x 30 mu m(2). The LSMO layer acts as a capping for YBCO, minimizing the degradation of the superconducting properties taking place during the patterning; moreover, as a ferromagnetic manganite, it is expected to accelerate the relaxation dynamics of quasiparticles in YBCO, making such a system potentially attractive for applications in superconducting ultrafast optoelectronics. The reproducibility of the values of the critical current densities measured in different devices with the same geometry makes our nanowires ideal candidates for photoresponse experiments. First measurements have shown a satisfactory photoresponse from YBCO/LSMO devices.

  • Improved Nanopatterning for YBCO Nanowires Approaching the Depairing Current
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1558-2515 .- 1051-8223. ; 23:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An improved nanopatterning procedure has been developed to obtain YBa2Cu3O7-x nanowires with cross-sections as small as 50 x 50 nm(2), protected by an Au capping layer. To probe the effective role of the Au protecting layer, we have measured the current-voltage characteristics and the resistive transition in temperature of the nanowires. Critical current densities up to 108 A/cm(2) have been achieved at T = 4.2 K, approaching the theoretical depairing current limit. The resistance, measured as a function of temperature close to T-c, has been fitted with a thermal activated phase slip model, including the effect of the gold layer. The extracted values of the superconducting coherence length and of the London penetration depth give current densities consistent with the measured ones. These results cannot be achieved with nanowires without the Au capping layer.

  • Improved noise performance of ultrathin YBCO Dayem bridge nanoSQUIDs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Superconductor Science and Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-2048 .- 1361-6668. ; 30:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have fabricated YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) nano superconducting quantum interference devices (nanoSQUIDs), realized in Dayem bridge configuration, on films with thickness down to 10 nm. The devices, which have not been protected by a Au capping layer during the nanopatterning, show modulations of the critical current as a function of the externally applied magnetic field from 300 mK up to the critical temperature of the nanobridges. The absence of the Au shunting layer and the enhancement of the sheet resistance in ultrathin films lead to very large voltage modulations and transfer functions, which make these nanoSQUIDs highly sensitive devices. Indeed, by using bare YBCO nanostructures, we have revealed an upper limit for the intrinsic white flux noise level S-Phi,w(1/2)

  • Probing the phase diagram of cuprates with YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films and nanowires
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - 2475-9953. ; 2:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have grown and characterized 30-nm-thick YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films, deposited by pulsed laser deposition on both MgO (110) and SrTiO3 (001) substrates, which induce opposite strain to the superconducting layer. By carefully tuning the in situ post-annealing oxygen pressure, we achieved, in a reproducible way, films at different oxygen doping, spanning from the slightly overdoped down to the strongly underdoped region of the phase diagram. The transport properties of the films, investigated through resistance versus temperature measurements, are in perfect qualitative agreement with single crystals. Starting from these films, we have also successfully fabricated nanowires with widths down to 65 nm, at different oxygen doping. The nanostructures exhibit characteristic temperatures (as the critical temperature Tc and the pseudogap temperature T∗) similar to those of the as-grown films and carry critical current densities Jc close to the critical depairing value, limited by vortex entry. This implies that the superconducting and the normal state properties of underdoped YBCO are preserved in our films, and they can be studied as a function of the dimensionality of the system, down to the nanoscale.

  • Resistive state triggered by vortex entry in YBa2Cu3O7-delta nanostructures
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534. ; 506, s. 165-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have realized YBa2Cu3O7-delta nanowires and nano Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (nanoSQUID). The measured temperature dependence of the wire resistances below the superconducting transition temperature has been analyzed using a thermally activated vortex entry model valid for wires wider than the superconducting coherence length. The extracted zero temperature values of the London penetration depth, lambda(0) similar or equal to 270 +/- 15 nm, are in good agreement with the value obtained from critical current modulations as a function of an externally applied magnetic field in a nanoSQUID implementing two nanowires.

  • Signature of quantum criticality in cuprates by charge density fluctuations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The universality of the strange metal phase in many quantum materials is often attributed to the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP), a zero-temperature phase transition ruled by quantum fluctuations. In cuprates, where superconductivity hinders direct QCP observation, indirect evidence comes from the identification of fluctuations compatible with the strange metal phase. Here we show that the recently discovered charge density fluctuations (CDF) possess the right properties to be associated to a quantum phase transition. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we studied the CDF in two families of cuprate superconductors across a wide doping range (up to p = 0.22). At p* ≈ 0.19, the putative QCP, the CDF intensity peaks, and the characteristic energy Δ is minimum, marking a wedge-shaped region in the phase diagram indicative of a quantum critical behavior, albeit with anomalies. These findings strengthen the role of charge order in explaining strange metal phenomenology and provide insights into high-temperature superconductivity.

  • Transport properties of ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7-delta nanowires: A route to single-photon detection
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 96:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the growth and characterization of ultrathin YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films on MgO (110) substrates, which exhibit superconducting properties at thicknesses down to 3 nm. YBCO nanowires, with thicknesses down to 10 nm and widths down to 65 nm, have also been successfully fabricated. The nanowires protected by a Au capping layer showsuperconducting properties close to the as-grown films and critical current densities, which are limited by only vortex dynamics. The 10-nm-thick YBCO nanowires without the Au capping present hysteretic current-voltage characteristics, characterized by a voltage switch which drives the nanowires directly from the superconducting to the normal state. We associate such bistability to the presence of localized normal domains within the superconductor. The presence of the voltage switch in ultrathin YBCO nanostructures, characterized by high sheet resistance values and high critical current values, makes our nanowires very attractive devices to engineer single-photon detectors.
