  • InAs film grown on Si(111) by Metalorganic Vapor Phase Epitaxy
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6596 .- 1742-6588. ; 100, s. 042017-042017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the successful growth of high quality InAs films directly on Si( 111) by Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy. A nearly mirror-like and uniform InAs film is obtained at 580 C for a thickness of 2 mu m. We measured a high value of the electron mobility of 5100 cm(2)/Vs at room temperature. The growth is performed using a standard two-step procedure. The influence of the nucleation layer, group V flow rate, and layer thickness on the electrical and morphological properties of the InAs film have been investigated. We present results of our studies by Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, electrical Hall/van der Pauw and structural X-Ray Diffraction characterization.

  • A consensus yeast metabolic network reconstruction obtained from a community approach to systems biology
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature Biotechnology. ; 26:10, s. 1155-1160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genomic data allow the large-scale manual or semi-automated assembly of metabolic network reconstructions, which provide highly curated organism-specific knowledge bases. Although several genome-scale network reconstructions describe Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolism, they differ in scope and content, and use different terminologies to describe the same chemical entities. This make comparisons between them difficult and underscores the desirability of a consolidated metabolic network that collects and formalizes the 'community knowledge' of yeast metabolism. We describe how we have produced a consensus metabolic network reconstruction for S. cerevisiae. In drafting it, we placed special emphasis on referencing molecules to persistent databases or using database-independent forms, such as SMILES or InChl strings, as this permits their chemical structure to be represented unambiguously and in a manner that permits automated reasoning. The reconstruction is readily available via a publicly accessible database and in the Systems Biology Markup Language (http://www.comp-sys-bio.org/yeastnet). It can be maintained as a resource that serves as a common denominator for studying the systems biology of yeast. Similar strategies should benefit communities studying genome-scale metabolic networks of other organisms.

  • Impacts of large amounts of wind power on design and operation of power systems, results of IEA collaboration
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 8th International Workshop on LargeScale Integration of Wind Power into Power Systems as well as on Transmission Networks of Offshore Wind Farms.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IEA WIND R&D Task 25 on “Design and Operation of Power Systems with Large Amounts of Wind Power” collects and shares information on wind power impacts on power systems, with analyses and guidelines on methodologies. There are dozens of studies made and ongoing related to wind integration, however, the results are not easy to compare. In the stateoftheart report (October, 2007), and the final report of the 3 years period (July, 2009) the most relevant wind power grid integration studies have been analysed especially regarding methodologies and input data. Several issues that impact on the amount of wind power that can be integrated have been identified. Large balancing areas and aggregation benefits of large areas help in reducing the variability and forecast errors of wind power as well as help in pooling more cost effective balancing resources. System operation and functioning electricity markets at less than dayahead time scales help reduce forecast errors of wind power. Transmission is the key to aggregation benefits, electricity markets and larger balancing areas. Best practices in wind integration studies are described. There is also benefit when adding wind power to power systems: it reduces the total operating costs and emissions as wind replaces fossil fuels and this should be highlighted more in future studies.

  • RFID Technology-based Exploration and SLAM for Search And Rescue
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: <em>Proc. of the IEEE/RSJ Int. Conf. on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS)</em>. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 1424402581 ; , s. 4054-4059
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Robot search and rescue is a time critical task, i.e. a large terrain has to be explored by multiple robots within a short amount of time. The efficiency of exploration depends mainly on the coordination between the robots and hence on the reliability of communication, which considerably suffers under the hostile conditions encountered after a disaster. Furthermore, rescue robots have to generate a map of the environment which has to be sufficiently accurate for reporting the locations of victims to human task forces. Basically, the robots have to solve autonomously in real-time the problem of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). This paper proposes a novel method for real-time exploration and SLAM based on RFID tags that are autonomously distributed in the environment. We utilized the algorithm of Lu and Milios for calculating globally consistent maps from detected RFID tags. Furthermore we show how RFID tags can be used for coordinating the exploration of multiple robots. Results from experiments conducted in the simulation and on a robot show that our approach allows the computationally efficient construction of a map within harsh environments, and coordinated exploration of a team of robots.

  • The Little Book of Quieter Pavements
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The idea of designing and building quieter pavements is not new, but in recent years there has been a groundswell of interest in making this a higher priority. Various State Highway Agencies and the Federal Highway Administration have responded accordingly with both research and implementation activities that both educate on the state-of-the-practice, and advance the state-of-the-art. The Little Book of Quieter Pavements was developed with this purpose in mind to help educate the transportation industry, and in some cases the general public, about the numerous principles behind quieter pavements, and how they connect together.
